LESSON PLAN
In this unit, student will learn and understand the causes and events of the Civil War. Students will use the theme of beliefs and ideals to understand the issues surrounding slavery and states rights. By learning about individuals, groups, and institutions, students will understand the roles of key leaders in the Civil War. Finally, students will understand how location affected some of the major battles of the war. To put this all together, students will discuss how conflict and change affected the United States during and following the Civil War.
STANDARDS
SS5H1 The student will explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War. d. Describe the roles of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Stonewall Jackson. e. Describe the effects of war on the North and South.
OBJECTIVES Students will be able to: Discuss major differences between the North and South and how these differences led to the Civil War. Describe the influential roles that Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Stonewall Jackson played in the Civil War.
MATERIALS NEEDED
The Civil War: A Nation Divided program Resources about the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln.
TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS
Computer with Internet access.
ASSIGNMENT
1. Watch The Civil War: A Nation Divided, to initiate group discussion on how regional differences contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. 2. Create a presentation showing your fellow students the effects of the Civil War on the North and the South and the roles of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Stonewall Jackson. You will need to get into groups of 3- 4 people and create a Google Docs or Glogster account in which all members have access. This can be accessed on your mobile phone, iPod or the Internet (if you do not have one of these items, please see me for instruction on how to access the computers located in the library. 3. Once the Google Docs or Glogster account has been established, all members must create and collaborate on a presentation in which the following elements must be included: Posters, combine TEXT, audio or video animation, or slide shows. Please see Animoto, Slide Rocket, Prezi, etc. 4. You may also want to peruse Voicethread.com or Studystack.com to help with your presentation.
RUBRIC
This Rubric will be Peer Reviewed. This means that your fellow students will be grading you as well as your teacher. All grades will be averaged and that will be your final group presentation grade.
