DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
Computer Technology is a one-semester course that teaches all components of the technology graduation requirement at Charter Oak High School using various programs from Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and MovieMaker) as well an introduction to some Web 2.0 Tools (Symbaloo, Dropbox, Weebly, Prezi). Students will also get some exposure to editing and manipulating images in learning some basics with Adobe Photoshop. With these programs, students will learn to produce a variety of computer-based projects. Proper techniques and accuracy are encouraged.
PREREQUISITE
Students should enter this class with at least some knowledge and prior use of a standard keyboard. There will be no time devoted to typing lessons or learning how to type with a keyboard in this 3-week course.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS
One-semester course that focuses on fundamentals of various programs in Microsoft Office and other web-based tools. Students will:
Use Microsoft Word for everyday documents such as letters, reports, tables, resumes, and various desktop publishing documents Use Microsoft Excel in using calculations in creating advanced tables, spreadsheets, and charts Use Microsoft Publisher in creating advanced desktop publishing documents (i.e. brochures) Use Windows MovieMaker to add various editing features to existing movie files Use both Microsoft PowerPoint and Prezi in creating exciting presentations using sounds, animation, and graphics Use Adobe Photoshop to make quick and easy photo-editing manipulations to images Use Weebly.com to create simple webpage layouts Use the Internet in researching information and finding images for desktop publishing documents Learn and discuss various ethical issues affecting students in todays digital world
MATERIALS
Always bring with you: (1) pen or pencil, (2) some paper, and (3) small folder for your handouts
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)
Students will:
1. Pass a cumulative course exam (midterm, final) 2. Type a minimum of 35 words per minute with an error rate of 10% or less 3. Create a new word processing document suing at least 16 devices and modifications (insert table, picture, clip art, shapes, charge, header, footer, page number, and text boxes; modifications to margins, orientation, size, page color, columns, spacing, and page borders, etc.)
RULES
Misuse of Computer Lab Equipment will result in immediate removal from the course without credit (which includes any of the following):
Uploading/Downloading without Authorization Use of Flash Drive or other External Devices without Approval Unauthorized use of Internet Sites (includes online games or streaming video) Tampering with computer settings (includes Novell Console) Use of Novell Chat with other Students Any kind of vandalism to computer equipment
1. No Food, Drink, or Gum (unless drinks are kept in the back of room on kitchen sink); bottled water is OK
2. Cell Phones need to be used at appropriate times (whether its calling or texting). During assignments/quizzes/tests or when Im speaking during class are not considered appropriate times.
3. iPods or other MP3 devices will be allowed in this class under the following conditions: a. They do not become a distraction during your work (i.e. you are sharing with a classmate a certain song they should hear). Also no sharing of earphones with a friend/classmate. b. They are only turned on when I say they can be (no exceptions) c. When I flicker the lights on and off in the classroom, this means you need to stop your MP3 player and remove your earphones immediately
Failure in not abiding by the above MP3 rules will result in you not being able to listen to your player for the remainder of the day or for the rest of the semester. I f multiple students become a problem with MP3 players, then NONE of us will be able to use them! You make the call!
4. Be in the room when the tardy bell rings (afterwards means you are late = tardy = deduction in participation points)
Because your summer class is offered through Mt. Sac, you will receive a grade that will be recorded on a noncredit academic record through the colleges computer system. Your grade will be recorded as a standard letter grade, A-F. Your high school will also enter a grade for this class on your official transcript.
DROP POLICY
If you drop the class after it has been in session for 42 hours or more, you will be given a grade that takes into account your incomplete work. If you drop the class before this point, I may request that your name will be dropped from the class roster. If this is the case, there will be no grade reported to Mt. Sac.
BREAKDOWN OF CLASS CONTENT
Participation (20%) In-Class Textbook Activities, being on time, staying productive; you get 15 points a day (3 points each hour you are with me). These should be the easiest points of the class! Lesson Assessments (30%) These are the assignments where we put all the practice together into assessing how well you are grasping the content. Projects/Tests/Quizzes (25%) Projects include newspaper, MovieMaker, Prezi, etc. Quizzes include both written (vocabulary, keyboard shortcuts, commands) and on the computer (demonstration of skills learned from lessons) Microsoft Project Final Exams (25%) Finals on MS Word and Excel; there will be a cumulative final as well on the last day of class (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Please note: All work (participation, projects, and mastery assessments) is due (and will be graded) by the end of the school day
Grades will be posted every couple of days in my classroom. Final Grades will be posted at 3:00 outside my classroom on Thursday, 7/3 (last day of summer school). Grades will also be posted on the home page of my website (tparslow.weebly.com)
