Mathematics Tutorial

This document contains 10 practice problems related to probability and statistics for an engineering mathematics tutorial. The problems cover topics like rolling dice, fault probabilities for vehicle components, disk failure rates, passing a multiple choice test, and properties of the binomial, Poisson, and exponential probability distributions. Students are asked to calculate probabilities, express information in probability notation, and prove properties of common probability distributions.

MATHS 2201 Engineering Mathematics I Tutorial Exercise 1

Week of 5 March 2012

1. A pair of fair dice are rolled and the total of the two faces is calculated.
(a) Write down the sample space for this experiment.
(b) Find the probability that the total is a multiple of 3.
(c) Find the probability that the total is a multiple of 2.
(d) Find the probability that the total is a multiple of 3 or 2.
(e) Find the probability that the total is a multiple of 3 or 2 but not both.
(f) Find the probability that both faces are the same.
(g) Find the probability that both faces are the same, given that the total is a multiple of 2.
2. In cars with ABS brakes, faults occasionally occur with the wheel sensors and a warning light is
illuminated. It can also happen that the warning light comes on even when no fault is present.
In a certain type of car, the probability that a fault will occur in the rst year is 0.2% and the
probability that the warning light will come on when there is no fault is 0.1%.
(a) Express the given information in probability notation.
(b) Find the probability the warning light illuminates for a randomly chosen car in the rst year.
(c) Given that the warning light has come on, nd the probability that a fault occurred.
3. A system has 2 electrical components. The rst component has a probability of failure of 10%. If
the rst component fails, the second fails with probability 20%. If the rst works, then second fails
with probability 5%. Find the probability that
(a) At least one component works.
(b) Exactly one component works.
(c) The second component works.
4. Records at a motor vehicle inspection station show that 30% of vehicles inspected have worn tyres,
15% of vehicles inspected have worn brakes and 10% of vehicles inspected have both worn tyres
and worn brakes.
(a) Express the given information in probability notation.
(b) Find the probability that a randomly chosen vehicle does not have worn tyres or worn brakes.
(c) Given that a car has worn tyres, nd the probability that it also has worn brakes.
5. A computer with two hard drives has been congured so that one disk is used as primary storage
and the second is used as back up.
When the computer is operating under normal conditions, failures of the two disks occur
independently such that the probability of failure in a given 24 hour period is 0.001 for each
disk.
If the computer overheats, then failures of the two disks occur independently such that the
probability of failure in a given 24 hour period is 0.05 for each disk.
The probability that the computer overheats in a given 24 hour period is 0.1.
(a) Find the probability that the primary disks fails in a given 24 hour period.
(b) Find the probability that the back-up disk fails in a given 24 hour period.
(c) Find the probability that both disks fail in a given 24 hour period.
(d) Compare the probability in (c) to what would be obtained if the two disks just failed inde-
pendently and comment.

6. A multiple choice test consists of 20 questions, each with 4 choices of which exactly one is correct.
To pass the test a student must get at least 10 questions correct.
(a) What is the probability that the student passes if they randomly choose the answer for each
question?
(b) Suppose the student can eliminate one of the possible answers on each question as obviously
wrong. What is the probability that the student will pass if he chooses each answer randomly
from the remaining three possibilities.
7. Sheets of metal have plating faults which occur randomly and independently at a rate of 1 per m
2
.
Find the probability that a sheet 1.5 2m will have no more than two faults.
8. Show that the binomial probability function
p(x) =

n
x

x
(1 )
nx
for x = 0, 1, 2, . . . , n,
satises
n

x=0
p(x) = 1.
9. Show that the Poisson probability function
p(x) =
e

x
x!
for x = 0, 1, 2, 3, . . .
satises

x=0
p(x) = 1.
10. Show that the exponential probability density function
f(x) = e
x
for x > 0,
satises

f(x)dx = 1.
