Building A Host Cluster With Hyper

The 10 steps to build a host cluster using iSCSI shared storage in Hyper-V Beta 1 are: 1) Build the nodes with Hyper-V and configure virtual network switches. 2) Establish iSCSI targets and data drives. 3) Connect the iSCSI initiators on each node to the targets. 4) Install Failover Clustering on each node and validate the cluster configuration. 5) Create the cluster. 6) Make a virtual machine highly available. 7) Move the virtual machine between nodes to test failover.

Building a Host Cluster with Hyper-V Beta 1

What are the 10 steps you have to go through to build a host cluster using iSCSI shared storage?
1) Build nodes with Hyper-
!) Build irtual "etwor# Switches in Hyper-
$) %stablish iSCSI &arget 'uoru( and )ata drives
*) +se iSCSI initiator on each node to connect to targets
,) Install -ailover Clustering on each node
.) /un alidate on the cluster nodes
0) Create Cluster
1) Build a 2 to (a#e highly available
3) 2a#e the 2 highly available
10) &est it by (oving the 2 to another node
"ode1
45" I6 address 7 13!81.1808100
Heartbeat I6 address 7 1081081081
"ode!
45" I6 address 7 13!81.1808101
Heartbeat I6 address 7 108108108!
Cluster I6 5ddress 7 13!81.1808111
Step 1:
Building the nodes with Windows !001 %nterprise or )ata Center edition is a si(ple process8
9nce you have the 9S installed: you need to add the Hyper- role in Server 2anager ;and
reboot)
Step 2:
9nce you reboot and Hyper- installation co(pletes: you need to launch the Hyper-
(anage(ent console <ro( the 5d(inistration &ools (enu on each node8
=)o this on both nodes> 9n the right hand side: clic# the irtual "etwor# 2anager: and create a
new virtual networ# switch8 -or si(plicity (a#e it a private networ# and call it 6rivate8 &he
na(e must be the sa(e on both nodes8
Step 3:
?o to the iSCSI target ;hardware or so<tware based) and build two dis#s enabled <or shared
access8 9ne dis# needs to be ,00 2B or larger to hold the cluster con<iguration in<o: and other
dis# needs to be big enough to hold the virtual (achine: say 10 ?B (ini(u(8 Be sure to enable
the option <or shared or cluster access to the dis#s8
Step 4:
9n "9)%1 launch the iSCSI initiator so<tware8 )iscover the iSCSI target via na(e or I6
address and then establish a connection to the )ata and 'uoru( dis#s that were established in
step$8
9nce the dis#s are connected to "ode1: use )is# 2anage(ent to initiali@e and <or(at the( as
"&-S volu(es8 5ssign driver letter 'A to the s(all dis# and a drive letter li#e SA to the large
dis#8
"ow go to "ode! and use the iSCSI initiator to connect the target dis#s: you do not need to do
anything else8
Step 5:
-ro( Server 2anager: install the <eature called -ailover Clustering on each node8 and when
done: launch the -ailover Clustering 2anage(ent console 8
Step 6:
eri<y that "ode1 has current ownership o< the dis# resources ;although either dis# could have
ownership) and then launch the alidate process <ro( "ode1 speci<ying "ode1 and "ode! are
the nodes o< the cluster: run all tests8 I< issues are identi<ied: the validate report will provide
details on what the issue;s) are and how to resolve the(8
Clic# alidate a Con<iguration
6rovide the na(es o< the two nodes
%Becute the validation process
?et a report bac# on the progress: i< success<ul you should see all green chec#(ar#s
Step :
9nce you have co(pleted a success<ul validate process: you can now build the cluster8 It is a
<our step process
1) Select Create Cluster <ro( the -ailover Cluster 2anage(ent console8
!) Speci<y the nodes o< the cluster
$) Speci<y the na(e and I6 address o< the cluster
*) %Becute the create process
Step !:
+sing the Hyper- 2anage(ent console: create a virtual (achine called &est2 on "ode1 that
can be (ade highly available8 +se Windows !001 <or the operating syste(8 &he integration
co(ponents are auto(atically installed <or you8
)o not start &est2: it (ust be in the powered o<< state to (a#e it highly available8
Step ":
2a#e &est2 highly available8 &his allows you to have a planned or unplanned (igration o< a
2 between nodes8
Clic# Con<igure a Service or 5pplication
Select irtual 2achine <ro( the list o< available services or applications
Select &est2 as the 2 to (a#e highly available
%Becute the process
SuccessCC
"ow bring the 2 online: right clic# the 2 in the list and select DBring this service or
application onlineD
Step 1#:
9nce it is online you can test the <ail over by (oving the 2 to "ode!8
/ight-clic# the 5pplication and select D2ove this service or application to another nodeD: select
"ode!
Watch the process
1) &he 2 is placed in saved state
!) &he resources are (oved to "ode!
$) &he 2 is resu(ed <ro( saved state
"ow the 2 has success<ully <ailed <ro( "ode1 to "ode!8
Eou have success<ully built and tested a !-node host cluster using Hyper-8 "ote that you can
have up to 1. nodes in a Hyper- host cluster8
