Operations with The Abacus, Static addition Montessori Maths Lesson Activity for

Ages 6 to 9

MONTESSORI MATERIALS:

The Abacus, which is a wooden frame with 4 wires fixed horizontally. Green = uni
ts / thousands Blue = tens Red = hundreds Montessori Sum cards series cards for
static addition, subtraction and multiplication.

MONTESSORI ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES:

To give the child further practise working with and recording the three operatio
ns : + - x

AGE:

6 years plus. [restrictedarea]

PRESENTATION 1:

1.Begin the work cycle. Tell the child that we are going to do the sum 2442 + 13
41 with the abacus.
2.Remind the child to start adding with the units.
3.The child counts across the units of the first line (2) and then counts across
the units of the second line (1).
4.He counts through all the units and then records his answer as 3.
5.The child then counts the numbers in the tens column. (4) + (4).
6.He records his answer, 8, in the tens column.
7.The child continues in this way with the hundreds and thousands by counting, a
dding and recording his answer at each stage.
8.When the sum is complete, the Montessori Directress reads the sum through once
more, 2442 + 1341= 3783.
9.The child then replaces all the beads to the left-hand side of the abacus in p
reparation for the next sum.

MONTESSORI MATERIALS:

e there are ten beads which are colour coded. Green = units / thousands Blue = t
ens Red = hundreds The left-hand side of the abacus is also numbered 1, 10, 100,
and 1000 from top to bottom. The 4 quantities of Montessori Golden Beads, i.e.
a unit bead, a 10-bead bar, a 100 bead square and a 1000 bead cube on a felt lin
ed tray. A table mat.

MONTESSORI ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES:

To teach the names and value of the beads on the abacus. To associate the Golden
Beads with the beads on the abacus. To move from the real quantity to a symbolic q
uantity.

AGE:

6 years plus. [restrictedarea]

PRESENTATION 1:

1.Begin the work cycle.
2.Bring across one green unit bead of the abacus and take a Golden Bead unit and
say to the child, These are the same. This one unit Golden Bead is the same as t
his green unit bead.
3.Bring across one blue 10 bead and bring up the one ten bead bar and say, These
are the same. The one blue bead stands for 10.
4.Replace both the beads and continue the exercise by comparing the red bead to
the 100-bead square and the green bead to the 1000 bead cube.
5.Replace the beads on the tray.
6.You may do a three period lesson with the beads on the abacus to confirm that
the child grasps the quantities.
7.End the work cycle.
