Child & Adolescent Development
Syllabus

Course Description:
Child and Adolescent Development online (CEDP 313) is designed to give the student an overview of
principles and concepts of development and the sequence of development in various psychological
domains. We will examine theories that attempt to explain development, how both biology and
environment (physical and social) interact to produce and maintain behavior.

Required Text:
Rathus, S. (2010). Childhood and adolescence: Voyages in development (4th. ed.).

Objectives:
There are a number of specific goals that will be evaluated in this course that will reflect the students
understanding of the material we are studying. The student must be able to provide scientifically
acceptable definitions and examples of:

(a) the role of scientific reasoning in enhancing our understanding of development;
(b) the impact of atypical development, and
(c) how such understanding allows us to intervene in home, clinical, and school settings.
