Does it make any difference to belong to a denomination? Do you give it any more than a
passing thought that we are members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)? What does it mean to you, if
anything, to say that you are a Disciple (big D)?
Many churches broke away from denominations after the nineteen-sixties. Some people felt that such an
affiliation limited a churchs ability to respond to the needs of the local congregation. They also complained that
supporting the denominational structure took resources away from the local church. In some cases, their
arguments made sense. In most, they did not.
We have a very efficient General and Regional structure that supports the work of the local churches and
extends our ability to minister across the country and around the globe. Because we are a member congregation
of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we a part of a much larger effort to care for people at every stage
of life, in every socio-economic class, and across every political and national boundary. We carry out the great
commission of Christ, to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth, in deed and word.
We might be able to support one missionary all by ourselves if we were an isolated, independent church,
but we could never support the hundreds we support now. We might be able to send a care package to victims
of the recent tornadoes across mid-America, but we could not send the thousands we are sending even as I write
this. We are able to support struggling congregations in transitional neighborhoods where the need for the
compassion of Christ is greatest because we stand together. We are able to maintain a strong presence in the
areas of Los Angeles with the greatest need because we stand together. Because we are one congregation
amongst many who work together, Christs hunger is relieved more often, Christs thirst is quenched more
often, and Christ is recognized in every human being more often.
In addition to the practical difference our denomination makes in our ability to reach the world for
Christ, we also benefit in other ways from our affiliation. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) stands for
unity. Our denomination grew from a movement in the United States at the beginning of the nineteenth century
to get back to the basics of the Christian faith in an attempt to bring Christians together. The founders of this
movement came mostly from Presbyterian and Baptist roots, but they worked together to bring a sense of unity
to all Christians. Our denomination stands for diversity, especially diversity of thought. We encourage people to
read the Bible for themselves and reach their own understanding. Our denomination stands for responsibility,
since we believe each person is accountable for his or her own faith. We do not delegate matters of faithful
living to official leaders, ordained or otherwise. We support, encourage, and expect each person to live out the
gospel in the way he or she is uniquely suited to do so.
Being a member of a small, but great denomination is a tremendous blessing! We are blessed with great
Regional support in this time of transition. As Debra and I leave our positions, you can be sure you will find
great candidates ready to interact with the search committee as it seeks the next pastor of this church. You can
be sure the search committee and the entire congregation will receive support from Don Dewey, Susan
Gonzales-Dewey and the Regional staff. These are just a few more reasons to celebrate our denomination!

Seni or Book Cl ub
The Senior Book Club has
chosen to read a new comic
mystery novel about two women
who are forced to reimagine who they are and
what they are capable of. The All-Girl Filling
Stations Last Reunion is a perfect
combination of comedy, mystery, wisdom, and
charm. Fun-loving, spanning decades and
generations, and centered on a little-known
aspect of Americas twentieth-century story,
the novel was written by Fannie Flagg, a born
storyteller. Nancy Knott will host the
discussion of the book on July 24, 2014.
The other book we chose to read for a
September discussion is Defending Jacob.
Award-winning author William Landay has
written the consummate novel of an embattled
family in crisisa suspenseful, character-
driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale
of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at
which our lives can spin out of control. We
invite you to get one or both of these books
and join us for a fun fellowship of discussion.

HealingTouchSpiritualWorkshop
On Sat. July 19 from 9:30 A.M. -12:30
P.M., First Christian Church Whittier will be
hosting an Introduction to Healing Touch
Spiritual Ministry: Using Your Hands to
Heaven
The Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry
program helps participants connect energy
healing with their faith, and with the history of
healing in the Church. This program is rooted
in both the Judeo-Christian perspective and
Eastern healing modalities. We recognize that
all healing comes from God, and that we can
be conduits of Gods healing compassion.
For churches, HTSM is an effective
addition to the work of the Elders, Stephen
Ministries and Pastoral Partners calling on
church members who are hospitalized or
homebound.
This workshop will explore many
healing stories in the Bible, discuss the healing
ministry of Jesus and his Disciples, and the
work of the early Church as it continued Jesus
call to heal and anoint. We will also consider
how science contributes to our understanding
of ancient techniques that come to us from
Eastern traditions. Finally, we introduce a
simple technique for the laying-on-of-hands
that can be used in nearly any setting.
Rev. Louise Sloan Goben is the
instructor. Louise is an ordained minister of
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and
serves as Associate Minister at First Christian
Church, North Hollywood. She is also a
Certified Practitioner of Healing Touch
Spiritual Ministry and an instructor with the
Institute of Spiritual Healing & Aromatherapy.
There will be a $15 suggested donation for the
event. Register with Rev. Kel Henderson, 714-
465-6991 or with Donna in the church office.

ReviewOfTheMayOutreachMinistryMeeting
The Outreach Ministry held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 21 in the Choir Room. For each
month's meeting, a scripture is selected and printed on the agenda. For May, the scripture was James 2:17. It
reads: "So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead." After reading this verse, Ed Linberg, Chair, reminded the
group that this was one of the two lessons he read during Harold Horn's Memorial Service on May 17th. He
then told them that Harold had been a member of the Outreach Ministry for many years because our
congregation's outreach ministries were a passion that led him, along with Virginia, to visit missionaries when
they traveled. The Outreach Ministry has lost one of its most important members and Harold's passion for
outreach challenges all of us to walk in his footsteps.
During the meeting, we dealt with these items.
1. We were informed that our net income to date for support of outreach ministries was $811 through
April. This is the first month in a long time we've had a surplus.
2. Donna Woodbridge told us about the meeting of the Global Ministries Task Force, a group
representing both our church and Casa de Oracion. We have a new child we are supporting. She is a 9 year old
who lives in the Philippines. Her name is Mary Joy Dumabok. A group representing our two congregations
will be meeting in June to discuss ways we can involve the children of both congregations, as well as others, in
reaching out to her.
3.The final total of the Easter Offering was $1,305, less than our goal, but a higher total than was given
in 2013.
4. Phil Forbes told us that the project to provide furnishings for the new apartments that will be used in
Pathways of Hope's Second Step program was $1,000. He reported on the ribbon cutting ceremony he
attended the day before our meeting.
5. Donna Woodbridge reported that sales to date from the Tri-Tip Project at the Farmer's Market are
$4,144. Projecting this figure out through October when the Project ends, we could have income in the amount
of $17,844. This would be a good increase over 2013's sales.
6. Randy Langston reported that the April 27th CROP Hunger Walk generated in excess of $22,000.
7. Craig Wallace reported on the Soles for Souls Project. We are going to shift the recipient of our
donations to funds2org.com , an organization that is working with the Regional Church to collect shoes for
distribution around the world. One of the factors in our decision to make this change is that the Region is
asking for us to collect shoes between now and the Regional Assembly at which time they will be dedicated
and sent to funds2org.com and they will pick up our donations. We will be collecting shoes again in the month
of June. Watch for more details in the weeks ahead.
8. The Mission Trip to Moore, Oklahoma, set for September 28 through October 4, is still open to more
volunteers from our congregation. We are targeting July 1st as the date for participants to pay their $100
registration fee.
9. The School Kits Project is set for late June with Mary Anne Richmond and Julie Stuart coordinating
this activity. Julie and a friend have made 25 cloth bags for us to fill with school supplies. Watch for more
information about this project.
10. A goal of $750 was set for the 2014 Pentecost Offering to be received on Sundays June 1 and June 8.
11. June 29 was set as the date for our 2014 Offering of Letters sponsored by Bread for the World. More
information about this will be coming out over the weeks between now and then. Ben Stuart is coordinating
this program for us.
12. Craig Wallace reported that he has requested that FCC, Fullerton, have 10 spots at the Saturday,
June 21st work day for the Habitat for Humanity Project in LaHabra.
13. Pam Findley-Flor will coordinate our Christmas in July Project. This is when we bring in toys,
games, etc. to support Pathways of Hope's December distribution of Christmas gifts to children and teens of
families in Fullerton.
14. We discussed the Disciples' Refugee Resettlement Project. A member of the Outreach Ministry is
going to get more information about this project for us to discuss at our next meeting.
15. Connie Townsend will coordinate the CWS Blanket Project set for August.
16. Two members of the Outreach Ministry--Mary Anne Richmond and Jill Scott--agreed to meet with
Barbara Fenters and Helen Bailey about the organizing of our Annual Alternative Christmas Faire. This year's
event is set for Sunday, November 2.
17. Ed Linberg reported on the possibility of our showing a film, "The Stranger," produced by

8
Sojourners. It is a 45 minute film dealing with the issue of immigration reform from the perspective that God's
people are called to "welcome the stranger." The film is to be previewed by members of the Outreach Ministry
sometime after it is released on 6/5 before a date is set for showing it to the congregation.
18. It was decided to co-sponsor, with the Fullerton Congregational Church (UCC), an evening of
reflection on a program known as Churches for Peace in the Middle East. That meeting will occur on Tuesday,
June 24th at 7 P.M. at the Fullerton Congregational Church. The program will be presented by the Global
Ministries Task Force that combines the Disciples in the PSW Region and Southern California Conference of
the UCC.
19. A brief discussion was held concerning the possibility of asking our congregation to be part of the
Week of Compassion Endowment Fund. It was agreed to postpone further discussion of this matter until the
current A-V Project has been successfully completed.
20. Finally, a brief discussion was held concerning the leadership of the Outreach Ministry beginning in
2015 in light of the fact that the current Chair will have served two full years in this capacity as of December
31, 2014.
Since the Chair of the Outreach Ministry will be away on June 18th, the night of our regularly
scheduled meeting for next month, and in light of the fact that our upcoming projects for June, July and
August are well in hand, it was decided that the Outreach Ministry will not meet in June. The next meeting is
set for Wednesday, July 16th at 7 P.M. in the Choir Room.
The Outreach Ministry

PentecostOfferingToBeReceivedThisSundayAndNextSunday
Do you know what year our church was started? Yes, it was in 1905--109
years ago! Do you know who was the person who stepped up and said, "We need a
new church in this community" and not only said that but did something about it?
Yes, it was Charles C. Chapman who started our congregation and, though he was not an ordained minister,
he served as our first pastor. Why these questions? This year's theme for the Pentecost Offering is, "Every
church was new once." Yes, we, too, were new once! Our start date was so long ago that no one among us
remembers those early years and only a few people among us remember some of the people who were key
leaders in the life of our church before World War II.
What would our community of Fullerton be like if Charles C. Chapman, and others, had not taken the
time and made the effort to start our congregation? That's not an easy question to answer. But we who are part
of the Outreach Ministry believe that Fullerton would be poorer in many ways without our having been on the
corner of Harbor and Wilshire for over 100 years and counting! We think you agree. We also think that
people not affiliated with our congregation, but who are aware of our ministry over the years, would agree,
too.
Our forebearers, some of whose names and stories we remember and whose pictures we've seen, made
a commitment to start our church. So, we invite you to consider making a gift in support of the 2014 Pentecost
Offering to help other Disciples' churches to get started later this year, early next year, or a few years from
now. All of the funds generated through the Pentecost Offering of our church and sister congregations of the
Disciples will be spent to start new churches, with half of the funds we generate, being available for the
starting of new congregations in the Pacific Southwest Region. One of those relatively new churches shares our
building--Casa de Oracion. Their congregation was formed in 2006. Our goal for the 2014 Pentecost Offering is
$750. Please use the special offering envelope which will be available to you in the worship bulletin on June 1st
to make your gift. Thank you!
