Multi-purpose machine for tough mining conditions

Surface Miner 2200 SM

Wirtgen has revolutionized mining
Mining useful minerals in difficult geological conditions
is often both complicated and unprofitable. The robust
Surface Miner 2200 SM offers the ideal solution to this
problem. Instead of drilling and blasting, it cuts rock up to
2,000 mm wide, crushes it and loads it on trucks, all in one
single working pass. This environmentally beneficial mining
method is clearly superior to conventional technologies, as
it enables you to work much more efficiently with fewer
machines, less personnel and less adverse impacts on the
environment.
Switch to and benefit from this novel mining method
2 // 3
The cutting technology is more economical than conven-
tional methods when utilizing all advantages it has to offer.
The precise and stable cross-sections produced in
earthwork and rock operations reduce or even avoid
expensive reworking.
The selective mining of useful minerals reduces
processing efforts and enables precise mixing.
The 2200 SM is a valuable asset both as a classical
surface miner and, after modification, as a high-
performance cold milling machine.
Smooth and
economical operation
The 2200 SMs high potential
becomes particularly evident in
difficult mining conditions
The 2200 SM helps to exploit
even the peripheral areas of
mineral deposits
Modern technology boasts
high performance
Drilling, blasting and pre-crushing are out of date.
The Surface Miner 2200 SM takes precedence over
these outdated mining methods, using a highly efficient
operating procedure instead that satisfies all requirements.
The miner cuts and crushes rock in one single working pass
and loads it directly on trucks, if required. The powerful
workhorse therefore combines the jobs of many conventional
machines but is suitable for one-man operation. This is
reflected in overall cost and time savings for the machine
owner.
A profitable alternative in opencast mining, earthwork and rock operations
4 // 5
Low staff requirements and a small number of machines
reduce operating costs and increase the effectiveness
of the operation.
Gentle mining without blasting shortens approval
procedures, thus also reducing the time needed for
opening up new deposits.
Environmental pollution caused by outdated methods,
such as vibrations, dust and noise, is greatly reduced.
The low degree of environmental pollution permits
mining close to residential areas or roads and increases
the exploitation of the deposit.
Mining rock in one
single working pass
The 2200 SM replaces several
specialized machines even
crushers are out of demand
Blasting is no longer
state of the art cutting

Flexible operation even
in extremely hard conditions
The 2200 SM is capable of cutting rock with uncon-
fined compressive strengths of up to 50 MPa. Its pow-
erful, generously dimensioned components make it perfectly
suitable for these applications. The machine additionally
features intelligent, flexible functions. If offers three different
operating modes: The cut material can be loaded directly on
trucks via the loading conveyor, discharged to the side of
the machine by means of the slewable conveyor or deposited
in a windrow immediately behind the machine. Yet another
beneficial application is the direct use of small-sized material
as backfill.

potential when working in soft rock

An important aspect of discharging to the side of the
machine is that the material of several cuts is mixed and
then serves as a stockpile for subsequent loading.
The loading conveyor is equipped with rollback
safeguard and material steadying aprons to ensure
uninterrupted operation.
The mechanically driven cutting drum utilizes the engine
power in full to achieve high efficiency.
A 3.80 m wide cutting drum (optional) for special
applications in soft rock is capable of increasing the
machines production by as much as 40%.

Mature engineering
speeds up work processes
Intelligent, innovative functions enable the machine to
make fast headway in day-to-day operation. Wirtgens
proven levelling systems, for instance, guarantee that the
machine will always work at the optimum cutting depth, and
replacing cutting tools is as easy as childs play due to wide
opening flaps and simple handling. The spacious operators
cabin has also been designed with much attention to detail.
It extends beyond the machine on both sides, providing the
operator with a full view of the working area at all times.
A noteworthy feature is that only one machine operator is
required for securing the overall flow of operation.
Tried-and-tested features made by Wirtgen

The machines continuously adjustable forward advance
speed can be adapted to accurately match the operat-
ing requirements.
Various levelling systems (e.g. ultrasonic or laser) enable
the cutting depth to be adjusted with pin-point accuracy.
Quickly accessible, central points of maintenance make
easy work of servicing and inspection.
The 2200 SM has an inner turning radius of just 2.50 m,
which permits fast manoeuvring even in extremely
confined conditions.

Surface miners are a valuable asset in particular for
operations where profitability and a high quality of the
mined material are a must. In opencast mining, these in-
clude the highly selective mining of thin layers of mineral
rock, such as gypsum, coal or phosphate. The 2200 SM is
also profitable in areas where blasting is restricted due to
excessive ground vibrations, noise or the development of
dust. This poses no problem at all for our miner, as it is
capable of mining natural resources even in the vicinity of
residential areas, industrial buildings or railway installations.
In earthwork and rock operations, the machine cuts precise
and stable cross-sections that are suitable for use as
carriageways, embankments, trenches or tunnel floors.
The 2200 SM offers infinite application possibilities
Efficient and highly successful
whatever the job
10 // 11
The 2200 SM is capable of mining rock of different
degrees of hardness that cannot be removed by
conventional excavating equipment.
It is easily capable of producing small-sized material
(e.g. gravel) directly in the mining operation.
The machine is capable of removing complete road
pavements (optional model equipped with road milling
drum).
Road construction materials can be cold recycled in-situ
(optional model equipped with cold recycling system).
Quality prevails the
world over
