Chapter02 7 Study Guide

1. A beam is to carry a total live load of 50 kips and a total dead load of 20 kips over a 30 ft span. 2. The problem is to select the lightest W shape for unbraced lengths of (a) 5 ft, (b) 10 ft, and (c) 15 ft. 3. Calculations are shown selecting W shapes that satisfy the required nominal bending moment (Mn) for each unbraced length considering the weight of the beam. A W14x53 is selected for the 5 ft length. A W14x82 is selected for the 10 ft length. A W14x120 is selected for the 15 ft length.
