INTRODUCTION

You must introduce your reader to your main

idea, and you must get their attention.
It is in the introduction that you tell your
reader what experience you will be talking
about.
You also inform the reader of a theme or idea
that you have or want them to take away from
this essay.

TYPES OF INTRODUCTION
The opening sentence of your essay is very
important. Your duty is to get the reader
interested right from the start. A lifeless,
stereotyped or dull sentences may not
interest your reader to continue. Keep the
opening short and do not get carried away.
Here are some guidelines on how you start
your essay.

1. Describe the background of your
story.
EXAMPLE :
There was once an old lady who lived in
an old, dark and shabby hut at the end of
the village.

2. Describe the setting to create the
mood
EXAMPLE :
It was a warm night. There had been no rain
for the past week. I was lying down on the
couch watching the late night movie.

3. Use direct speech to create a lively
beginning
EXAMPLE :
May God answer my prayers and lead me to
the right way, she whispered.

4. Use words that convey sound to
start on a dramatic note
EXAMPLE :
Bang! Bang! A loud banging sound came from the
backyard of the bungalow.

5. Use of proverb or quotation
EXAMPLE :
1.Where there is a will, there is a way. I kept on
walking in the dark. It was windy then in the dark
suddenly
2. Topic: Write about some of your classmates
It takes all sorts to make the world. If you step into
my classroom, you will understand the true
meaning of that saying.

6. Ask a question
EXAMPLE :
1. Have you ever had a friend who could tell
you what you were thinking?
2. TOPIC: DESCRIBE AN INCIDENT WHICH
FRIGHTENED YOU.
What would you do if a monkey steals your
breakfast? Well, this is something that
happens quite often in my school.

7. An anecdote
EXAMPLE:
Topic: My favourite teacher.
I was gazing sadly at my Science paper when Pn.
Mona passed by. Looking at your marks isnt
going to change them for the better, you
know, she said.
