2 COMBATING OBESITY INTRODUCTION Obesity is a prevalent problem in todays society. In 2008 alone, 500 milion adults were classified as obese and every year, approximately 3 million people die as a result of being obese (World Health Organisation, 2013). Obesity is also a major issue in New Zealand, with the country being the 12 th most overweight in the world (New Zealand Herald, 2013). This is where XXX bracelet and application can help. This product will allow the customer to be aware of their eating and exercise habits whilst making comparisons between the two, therefore encouraging healthier living. 3. BUSINESS SECTION 3.1 Vision To create quality innovative technology that will encourage healthier living and lifestyle habits. 3.2 Industry Analysis: Smart-phone Application Industry Industry: Smart-phone Application Industry. This is a relatively new, but nonetheless fast- growing industry, due to the majority of cellphone owners having smart-phones (Smith, 2013). Force: High/Low: Justification: Buyer power: High There is a large number of applications in the application stores for both iPhone and Android devices, which means that buyers have the ablitiy to choose. Supplier power: Low Software that are capable of creating applications are readily available and accessible, due to an
3
3 increasing number of developers entering the ndustry in hopes of making sales. Threat of new entrants: High The threat of new entrants to the smart-phone application industry is high as there are almost no barriers to entry, and anyone can make an iPhone app (Gordon, 2012). The main barrier would be start-up costs, however it is essentially non-existent to develop an application. Threat of substitutes: Low While there are websites that offer the same function as some smart-phone applications, they are less convenient and people are much more accustomed to the accessibility of applications. Rivalry among existing competitors: High Rivalry amongst all developers is high due to applications being listed according to rating and popularity in the application stores, which means that competition for high ratings and more exposure is vigorous. Overall attractiveness of the industry: Overall, the smart-phone application industry is relatively attractive and this is evident in the large number of applications already existing in application stores. Applications do not cost a considerable amount of capital to develop but at the same time have a high potential for profits, this alongside having low entry barriers renders the industry an attractive one. 3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs The primary target customer group for this application will be smart-phone owners with access to Android and iOS application stores who are overweight. However, this does not mean that this application is only limited to these users as people who wish to maintain a
4
4 healthy lifestyle are also able to take advantage of the application. Healthcare applications are becoming increasingly popular (Carroll, 2012), meaning that more people are making use of applications such as this and the market is ever growing. 3.4 The Product and Service The product that is being provided is a bracelet and an application which will have a combination of features encouraging users to live a healthier lifestyle. The features include a bracelet which is able to scan food items and recognise its dietary information, then transfer the data to the smart-phone application, allowing users to keep account of how many calories they have consumed. When the user exersies, the bracelet will also be able to calculate the amount of calories that have been used through a sensor. This data too is transferred to the application, and a comparison between calorie intake and output can be made. An essential selling point of this application is that it allows users to monitor both their daily intake and output of calories, which combines the functionalities of a number of existing applications into one for more convenient access. 3.5 Suppliers and Partners In order to create the application, software developers are needed and with a large number of graduates holding relevant degrees and qualifications, one can be easily accessed. Another potential supplier is scanner manufacturers, who will install the scanner in the bracelet so that information can be transmitted between the bracelet and smart-phone application. Other suppliers may include accountants for financial matters, and lawyers for legal affairs. Once the development of the application is completed, partnerships need to be formed with providers of platforms for the release of the application, namely Googles PlayStore and Apples iOS. These two platforms will provide a popular medium of distribution for the application and with both the ranking and popularity search functions, the application has a greater chance of reaching more customers. 3.6 Strategy: Differentiation
5
5 The competitive scope of this application is broad market. Due to obesity being a widespread and prevalent problem, the target market for this product is broad so that it is readily available for everyone to use in preventing and combating the growth of obesity. The cost strategy of this application will be high cost. Although the application will be relatively cheap to develop, the bracelet will cost more as it will be the first product of its kind, therefore requiring careful research and development. With a broad target market and high cost, the overall Porters generic strategy adopted is therefore Differentiation. 3.7 Value Chain Activity: Make the product or service The most important value chain activity for this business is making the product. By focusing on the production of the bracelet and application, the product will be able to successfully deliver its service, which is in line with the business vision of create(ing) quality innovative technology that will encourage healthier living and lifestyles. Making the product will be expensive due to quality materials being sourced and expertise required in developing the information systems. Furthermore, it is vital that the product is reliable as a broad market is targeted. The process of making the product is therefore closely linked to the differentiation strategy that is adopted. 3.8 Business Processes 3.8.1. BRACELET MANUFACTURI NG PROCESS This process involves the conversion of raw material inputs into outputs and begins when a product order invoice is received. The warehouse department will collaborate with the implemented stock control system on the level of input that is required and the inputs are assembled to produce the bracelet. Next, a quality assurance test is required. If the bracelet fails this test, it will be returned to the assebling process where the faulty component(s) will be replaced. The process ends when the tested bracelet is packaged and ready to be delivered to the customers.

3.8.2. INFORMATI ON TRANSFER PROCESS This process transfers the data captured by the users bracelet into information that is meaningful. The process begins when data from the bracelet is received by the smart-phone application, and an analysis is conducted through the information analysis system. This allows the sample to be searched on databases which have been compiled in the cloud computing system. If a match for the item is not found, the sample data will be reported to the customer service department, where information regarding the sample will be relayed to the research department so that the database can be improved. If however a match is found, the search results will be sent back and the number of calories displayed on the users smart-phone application.

INFORMATI ON TRANSFER PROCESS Analysing and searching for the data captured in the database Relaying meaningful information to customers based on the data captured 3.10 Systems
3.10. 1. STOCK CONTROL SYSTEM - This system will enable the business to control and monitor various aspects of raw material stock information. The system supports the bracelet manufacturing system by ensuring that materials are at the required level, guaranteeing that the quality innovative technology of this product can always be created, in line with the business vision. 3.10. 2. INFORMATION ANALYSI S SYSTEM - The data captured from the scanner in the bracelet is transferred to an analysis engine in the cloud computing system, where it will be analysed to give the amount of calories and other dietary information. This system supports the information transfer process by refining the data, providing customers with quality and accurate information. 3.10. 3. CLOUD COMPUTI NG SYSTEM - This system allows resources and applications to be hosted remotely on the internet and will contain the database for related dietary information. The data that is captured in the customers bracelet will be sent to the cloud computing system for analysis, and almost instantly the results will be transmitted to the customer s smart-phone application.
