MOTION SENSOR HEALING
INTRODUCTION
In this deliverable, I will discuss the product which is a pressure measurer on how much
pressure is applied to the ligaments, joints or muscle injuries that has been sustained by the
patient. I will discuss how the product or business will fare in the industry in terms of the
specification of the product itself, the production process and how the product will be sold and
mainly what kind of customers it will attract.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
The vision of this business/product is to help people who have sustained muscular, joint or
ligament injuries and not to provoke their injuries so that it will not lead to more severe injuries
in the future.
3.2 Industry Analysis:
Industry: Medical Industry
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High Buyer power is high because there are many
kinds of motion sensors out there such as STT and
SBG systems. Buyers will have many options to
choose from. ("STT Systems, CLIMA", n.d.)
Supplier power: Low Supplier power is low because buyers have many
choices to buy from. There are many similar
products out in the current market.
Threat of new entrants: Low There are many similar products in the industry
but it is a difficult product to make and there are
a lot of entry barriers which would not make it
easy for new businesses to come into the market.
Threat of substitutes: High There are many different brands of motion
sensors in the market. ("SBG Systems - High End
Inertial Systems", n.d)
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High It is high because there are already a few similar
products in the market. Therefore the rivalry
amongst competitors will be high.
("Shadow - a wearable sensor network for motion
capture", n.d)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The industry quite interesting because it is easy to enter
the industry although there are many competitors rivalry amongst competitors is high. But with
the right planning it is possible to succeed in this industry.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
The target customers we have gone for this business are people who have sustained muscular,
joint or ligament injuries. The problem we face is that people do not normally go through with
their physical therapy programs after sustaining their injury (Cary B. Edgar, n.d). So with the
motion sensors being able to measure the progress of the recovery, physiotherapists are able
to monitor the progress of the injury without always having to schedule appointments with the
patients.
3.4 The Product and Service
The product is a motion sensor which consists of accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetic
sensors which measures the amount of pressure applied to injured area. Knowing how much
pressure is being applied during the recovery phase is very important for a speedy recovery.
Accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetic sensors have been adopted in human joint
kinematics studies for a very long time (Daniel Tik- Pui Fong & Yue- Yan Chan, n.d). The motion
sensor is highly transportable, low cost and uses very little power. Therefore it is very easy to
manage for someone who is injured, it would not be much of a hassle to put on but it is also
very beneficial to the consumer.
The sensor is also linked to a phone app which can warn the physiotherapist who is not within
the patients range to monitor the situation. It will help keep track of statistical data of pressure
being applied to the injured area. By studying the patients moving patterns, physiotherapist can
think of different ways to help treat the patient. They can also learn how to manage their own
injuries because physiotherapy sessions are very expensive and people do not tend to follow up
with their sessions. With the motion sensor, the physiotherapist can just tell the patient what
to do via email or cell phone and tell them what exercises need to be done to not provoke the
injured areas.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
The two potential suppliers that we might possibly have are a company called STT Engineering
& Systems and SBG systems. Both these companies both specialise in creating products ranging
from motion sensors to GPS aided sensors. They have a wide variety of products which their
development team has come up with that can help give us the supplies we need to build the
product. STT Engineering & Systems have a product called 'CLIMA' also known as clinical motion
analysis. This system has been primarily designed for the medical and biomechanical fields; it
uses a computer and a variable number of STT cameras which handles the motion capture
process. It captures the data and analyses and generates report for study and further
improvement. This will be helpful towards our product as we want to study the pressure
applied to the injured area so the patients themselves can learn how not to provoke their
injuries. The other supplier is called SBG systems, which they specialise in motion sensors which
ranges from subsea, miniature and static sensors ("STT Systems, CLIMA", n.d). With their
expertise they can help us produce the product we want because they use components such as
accelerometers and gyroscopes in their product which is what we need.
The partnerships that we can form are physiotherapy companies or biomechanical companies
which specialises in joint movement or anything biomechanical. The technology used is the
same and it is very easily transferrable amongst the different products. A potential partner is
company called Rex Bionics; they created mechanical legs for people who are paralysed waist
down. Our product and their product can co- work together as we need to study how much
pressure is needed to support the body. Another partnership we can form with is a company
called Shadow ("Shadow - a wearable sensor network for motion capture", n.d), which uses a
kinematic sensor system which uses Wi-Fi enabled controller. This can be helpful to us as we
want to be able to transfer our data from one area to another. Wi-Fi accessibility allows the
transferring of data to be very easy. A last partnership that we can form with is hopefully an
app company which can help us make the app to help keep track of the data for both the
patient and physiotherapist, by doing so we can achieve our idea of being able to bring the data
along with us at all times. Portability is something we hope to achieve and with these
companies helping us we are certain that we can achieve it.
3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost
The reason that it is focused low cost it is because the product is low cost. It does not take
much to make the product and it is a fairly simple product to make. It is also aimed at a narrow
market which is the physical therapy side of the medical industry. This is the type of strategy we
are using because we have a very specific idea of how we want to market our product. It is
aimed for people who have sustained joint, ligament or muscular injuries mainly.
In terms of cost strategy, the product is fairly cheap to produce and very cost effective. It just
contains accelerometers and gyroscopes to help analyse the amount of force being applied to
the affected area. In terms of the competitive scope, it is for a narrow market because it is
mainly targeted for people who have sustained injuries or physiotherapist to help analyse and
keep track of the recovery process while sustaining an injury.
The overall strategy is therefore Focused Low Cost
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Research and Development
The most important value chain activity for this business is Research and Development
Researchers and physiotherapist can figure out new ways to help people to prevent provoking
these injuries. The product helps keep track of the injury by using statistical data to measure
pressure being applied to the weak focal points of the human body. Doctors and
physiotherapist can learn from the problems that people face while sustaining injuries and help
come up with new products such as improved cast or straps to help people recover better. Or
maybe even come up with a drug to help strengthen the muscular joints or ligaments such as
glucosamine which is renowned for strengthening the joints for people suffering from joint
problems.
Therefore I believe the value chain activity of Research and Development is the most suitable
and accurate value chain activity for this business.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. DATA COLLECTI ON PROCESS - Once the motion sensor has been put on, data will be
transferred from the patients motion sensor to a data warehouse where it will be sent to the
physiotherapist office which will be used to study the patients recovery process. Any data lost
will be stored in the data warehouse so it is still retraceable if needed.
BUSINESS PROCESS 1 MODEL

3.8.2. DATA TRANSFERRI NG PROCESS - Once the data has been received by the physiotherapists.
The data then is transferred to other medical experts for further studies by their peers. Medical
professionals can come up with new products to help cure these injuries faster.

BUSINESS PROCESS 2 MODEL

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. DATA COLLECTI ON PROCESS
Collects data from patients motion sensors.
Stores the data in a data warehouse for backup purposes and it is easily
accessible.
3.9.2. DATA TRANSFERRI NG PROCESS
Transfer data to other authorities
Data transferred will be used for further studies and analysis for new product
development.
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - Data collected will be sorted and managed properly. Data
that comes through from the motion sensors will be sorted out by profiles such as areas,
ethnicity, and age. Therefore, it will be easily located and handled when professionals want to
use these data for further studies.
3.10. 2. DATA ANALYSI S SYSTEM - Professionals can access these data for analysis to try and
develop new products. The analysis process consists of just collecting the data from the
management system and studying it to find new ways.
3.10. 3. DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM - The processing system consists of using the analysis created
from the management system, and process it into reports or studies which can then be used for
further development of new products to help people with injuries.

CONCLUSION
The business goal is to help people who have sustained ligament, muscular damage. We can
predict how much pressure is being applied to the weak points and therefore prevent further
injuries. Furthermore, results gathered by physiotherapist can be used for further study to help
develop new products and help study the nature of the injury, which can help people recover
faster from these injuries but that is the main goal of this business. By using technology we are
trying to solve problems faced by society, the business will use many business processes and
systems to help the flow of the business work and hopefully kick start this firm.
