THE PROBLEM WITH YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT
INTRODUCTION
New Zealand teenager unemployment rate is continues going high in recent years.
According to government data, the unemployment rate for youth was 17.1% in the year to
March 2013, which was 0.1 percentage points above its level a year ago, and 7.2 percentage
points higher than its level five years ago. This is because employers always think teenagers
usually unexperienced and lack of skills in work place.
Logically the best way to address the problem is to simply the job seeking processes and
provides opportunities for teenagers to gain experiences and skills. How do we achieve this?
We develop a mobile app that collect information for local businesses and make it
presentable to teenagers. The app also includes learning workshop, list of up to date
volunteer job and temporary job.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To create a leading app that help teenager look for jobs in a fast, convenient and efficient
way. To help teenagers gain experiances and skills.
3.2 Industry Analysis: New Zealand Job Seeking Mobile App Industry
Industry: New Zealand Job Seeking Mobile App Industry
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High Data from Flurry Analytics shows a more worrying
statistic, with only 4% of users still using a given
mobile app 12 months after they downloaded it.
(Flurry Analytics,2013)
The buyer power is high because there are huge

3

numbers of substitutes for teenager job seeking
app such as website (Trademe, Jobster).
Supplier power: Low The huge number of free, quality mobile
applications means that consumer expectations
are now biased against paying for apps, even if
they only cost a measly $0.99. (Dulaney, 2012)
There are too many free job seeking app in the
industry that make supplier extremely hard to
control its costumers because consumers can
easily switch to other competitors by
downloading their apps.
Threat of new entrants: High The barrier to entry is small, since developing a
simple mobile app entails less than $100,000
investment often significantly less. (Software
marketing Advisor, 2013)
It is very easy for people to develop software that
help teenager find jobs, as the cost is relatively
low.
Threat of substitutes: High There are now over 500,000 iOS apps and
300,000 Android apps available. (Software
marketing Advisor, 2013)
These numbers indicate that there are huge
numbers of apps in the industry for every
category including apps for teenagers searching
jobs. There are a lot of substitute apps for
teenagers to download.

Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High By the year 2010, the mobile apps industry
became increasingly saturated as new
competitors entered the market flooding it with
numerous varieties of utilitarian as well as
lifestyle apps. (The State of Mobile Apps, 2010)
There are huge numbers of competitors in the
industry that provide free apps including
teenager job searching app that make the
industry very competitive.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Starting this business can be very profitable because
of low start up cost and low barriers of entry. However, it is also challenge because of high
buyer power and high rivalry among existing competitors. The business can easily lose its
costumers if competitors develop apps that help teenagers seek for jobs in a better way
such as new features.
