NEW TWIST IN NBA VS. STERLINGS: THEY WANT MINORITY INTEREST PAGE 1B
TRENTON Rabbi Mendel Epstein and his son, David
Epstein, both of Lakewood, and three New York rabbis
have been indicted on charges of plotting to kidnap and
coerce Orthodox Jewish men with electric cattle prods
to grant their wives religious divorces.
The men face potential life sentences on the charges.
According to court documents, Mendel Epstein, 68,
and Rabbi Martin Wolmark, 56, of Monsey, New York,
were recorded in August 2013 discussing plans to kid-
nap and torture men to force them to provide a get, a
religious document needed for an Orthodox Jewish di-
vorce.
In one meeting, Mendel Epstein said it would cost
$10,000 to pay for the rabbinical court to approve the
kidnapping and another $50,000 to $60,000 to pay for the
tough guys who would beat a womans husband, said
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. The woman was actually
an undercover FBI agent.
According to the indictment, Mendel Epstein met
with the undercover agent and another agent purport-
ing to be her brother at Epsteins Lakewood home and
told them his conspirators would use an electric cattle
prod on their victim.

LAKEWOOD A day after the release of two bomb-
shell reports that alleged the school district improperly
spent more than $6 million in state and federal funds,
officials could not answer a more basic question: what
happened to all the iPads?
An audit by the state Department of Educations Of-
fice of Fiscal Accountability found that during the 2011-
12 school year, Lakewood spent $468,485 in federal Title
I funding to buy computer equipment, including 760
iPads.
But when auditors asked for documentation to justi-
fy the purchases or even for a record of where the de-
vices are, district officials did not have answers, ac-
cording to the audit.
On Friday, Thomas DAmbola, the Lakewood schools
business administrator, said officials are only begin-
ning to go through the details of the states reports,
which also allege that the district inflated its enrollment
numbers to pocket $2.4 million more in state funds than

POINT PLEASANT BEACH Thousands of people
flocked to this community and others Friday, kick-
ing off summer at the Jersey Shore by heading to
the beaches, boardwalks and arcades for the start
of the Memorial Day weekend.
Despite a drizzly start to the weekend for some
visitors Friday morning and afternoon, it turned
into a great day with warm temperatures and sun-
shine an exciting start for the long holiday week-
end, according to Toby Wolf, a spokeswoman for
Jenkinsons Boardwalk.
More than 1,000 people arrived for the 16th an-
nual Todd Shows Summer Kick-Off, which began
at 6 a.m. and featured bands The Fray, Kacey Mus-
graves, Hot Chelle Rae and Magic!
Hundreds of people crammed inside Jenkin-
sons Pavilion where the stage was set and many

In a town known for its traditions and particularly
its rich Irish heritage, Gov. Chris Christie got into the
spirit of the occasion and did shots with Mayor Mat-
thew J. Doherty at the bar at DJais Friday morning
to inaugurate the Memorial Day weekend.
The governor had spent much of the morning at
DJais, joining the Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton
sports-talk radio show for an hour segment, which
was broadcasting live from there.
Belmar, for its part, rolled out the red carpet for
Christie, the first leg of stops he made along the Jer-
sey Shore Friday that also included Asbury Park,
Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights.
Today, the governor plans to visit Ocean City and
Wildwood.
