CUNNING CONSUMERS
INTRODUCTION
Currently, wastage is a serious problem facing the global community. One third of the
production of food goes to waste every year. Approximately 870,000,000 people are
currently hungry, this will be almost double the population that currently lives in United
States (Group, 2012).
If food wastage is not prevented it could result in even bigger complications for our society
such as shortage of resources, economic losses and big impacts on our environment.
Cunning Consumer provides an accessible and affordable solution that could help to
improve this issue in all households by creating an inventory system that controls the inflow
and outflow of food in your fridge or pantry. This system helps householders to avoid
wastage by providing the expiry date of each product.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To provide society with an affordable and accessible tool that minimizes the households
food wastage by providing an app that maintains an inventory and creates enjoyable
shopping and cooking experiences.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Food Inventory Application
Industry: Food inventory applications. Manual and automatic integrated applications for all
types of devices that manage and control the inventory of food.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High There are many online applications that provide
grocery inventory management for households,
some of the most popular are Whaz in your
Fridge, Keezeen and Best Before. ( Apartment

Therapy, 2014)
Supplier power: Low Programmers are a supplier for this product in
New Zealand. According to research completed in
2012 there were more than 16,941 people doing
programming jobs and many companies providing
this service. ( Careers New New Zealand, 2012)
Barcode scanners are a technology wildly used in
supermarkets and retailers. Some of the suppliers
include Congex (Cognex, 2013), Code (Code
Advance Barcode Readers, 2014) and Thomasnet.
(Thomas Publishing Company, 2014)
Threat of new entrants: High It can be said that creating an application is
usually cheap or in some cases free (Lianja Inc,
2014). Also, it can be created by anyone able to
use the many software platforms available.
Moreover, apart from the consumer guaranties
which are implicit in every product or service,
there are not many regulations, unlike other
industries.
Threat of substitutes: Low The highest threat for this product will be people
manually recording and keeping an inventory
themselves.
For example, the American Department of
Agriculture states that in a family of four people
20 pounds of food are wasted every month, this
is equal to $2,275 annually.( BLOOMBERG L.P,
2013) This shows that not many people do a
manually inventory of food at home.

Rivalry among existing
competitors:
high There are many applications in the industry as it
was mentioned above( Apartment Therapy,
2014).
Furthermore, this product is cheap suggesting
therofore that they compete in price.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The Food inventory application attractiveness is low.
This is because the customers have a lot of power, there is a lot of competition within the
industry and it is an industry that is easy to get into.
3.3 Customers and their needs
We want to target households everywhere because this is an issue currently affecting the
whole world.
Furthermore, it has been estimated that by 2100 there will be more that 11 million tonnes
of waste per day, just in urban areas (The wold Bank Group, 2014).
Therefore, if we do not help to prevent this issue there would be terrible consequences for
society.
3.4 The Product and Service
This product creates an online inventory monitoring system that updates daily and keeps a
record of the products people store in their pantry or fridge.
It also provides the customers with basic information that will help them to make decisions
such as what to consume and how much of each product to buy in order to avoid wasting
products. Moreover, this product will provide consumers with possible recipes to use
products that are about to expire.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Manufacturers of portable CDV scanners will be a potential supplier as they will provide us
with the appropriate scan reader. An example of these suppliers is Congex (Cognex, 2013).
Programmers are other suppliers as they will develop and mantain the application. For
example, Accegile Software (Accegile Software Inc, 2011)and AJACOM (Ajacom INC., 2002)
Food provider companies that advertise products in the application are potential partners.
Examples of these are Maggi and Budget.
Other potential partners are supermarkets such as Countdown and New World. These
companies will provide us with the barcodes in exchange for some advertising throughout
the application.
3.6 Strategy: Cost Leadership
We aim to take our product globally because this problem is not just affecting New Zealand
households but also those all around the world.
We aim to compete with low prices as because this is a problem for everyone, it is
important for it to be an affordable solution for all.
This will be implemented by creating collaborative partnerships with food brands and
supermarkets, as well as using technology such as bluetooth and online applications in order
to reduce costs.
3.7 Value Chain Acti vi ty: Technology and (R&D)
As this product focusses heavily on using technology we will constantly try to improve our
systems and databases that we have in the business to make sure we dont have redundant
data. It is necessary to develop technology so that the product can provide an accurate
record of product and continuously update to the mass database.
Furthermore, to create an enjoyable shopping and cooking experience, it is necesary to
focus on the features and design of the product, the information delivery and making the
product personalised to the customer needs.

3.8 Business Processes

3.8.1 MASS DATABASE IMPROVEMENT PROCESS
This process will be constantly improved and enhanced to ensure the systems that manage
the database and the information that is input by the customer into the system is accurate.
This will therefore ensure the elimination of duplication and redundant data, using
technology developments as a way of effectively maintaining the mass database.
