Favirab
Used in a postexposureprophylaxis regimen thatincludes
active immunization with rabies vaccineand passive
immunizationwith RIG. RIG providesimmediate,
temporaryrabies virus-neutralizingantibodies until the
patienthas an immunologicresponse to activeimmunization
with rabiesvaccine and produces virus-neutralizing antibodies
INDICATION:
Seroprophylaxis inindividuals exposedto rabies
virus, particularly seriousexposure (multiplesevere
bites to the face,head, neck & handswhen
domestic or wildanimal incriminatedeither cannot
beexamined or is affectedor suspected of
beingaffected by rabies; bitesin young children)

CONTRAINDICATION:
Known history of allergicsymptoms to equine
proteins

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES *
Frequency: Once Do not administer RIG in the same syringe or at the same
injection site as rabies vaccine.

(PVRV)
Used in a post exposure prophylaxis
regimen that includes active
immunization with rabies vaccineand

provides immediate,temporary rabies
virus-neutralizing antibodies until the
patient has an immunologic response
to active immunization with rabies
vaccine and produces virus-
neutralizing antibodies.
INDICATION:
For the prevention of rabiesin subjects at a high risk of exposure. All
subjects at apermanent risk eg,diagnostic, research andproduction
laboratory staff working on rabies virus,should be vaccinated.
Aserological test isrecommended every 6months. A booster
injectionshould be administeredwhen the antibody titer isbelow the level
consideredto guarantee protection: 0.5iu/mL.The following
categoriesshould be vaccinated giventhe frequency of exposure tothe
risk: Veterinarians (andassistants), gamekeepers,hunters, forest
rangers,slaughterhouse personnel,cavers, taxidermists;subjects exposed
toenzootic areas eg, children,adults and travellers visitingthese areas.

CONTRAINDICATION:
Severe febrile infection,acute disease, progressivechronic disease (it
ispreferable to postponevaccination); knownhypersensitivity to any of the
ingredients of Verorab.Post-Exposure: Due to thefatal progression
of declared rabies infection,there are nocontraindications tocurative
vaccination.If there is any doubt, it isessential to consult thedoctor or
pharmacist.
Use in pregnancy &lactation:
Verorab has notbeen the subject of animalteratogenicity studies. Inthe
absence of sufficienthuman data, it isrecommended to postponepre-
exposure vaccination.For the vaccination of patients at a high risk
of contamination, thebenefit/risk ratio must beassessed
beforeadministering the injection.

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES *
Frequency: Favirab must only be administered in a rabies control
center, under medical supervision
Consequently, make sure that the needle has not
penetrated a blood vessel.
Route: IM Do not administer Favirab IV(due to the risk of shock
ie,sudden collapse with drop inblood pressure).
Favirab should not be administered in repeated
doses.

Tetanus Immunoglobulin
Tetanus immunoglobulin is used for
passive immunization against
tetanus. Absorption: Well absorbed
INDICATION:
Tetanus prophylaxis. Tetanus treatment.

CONTRAINDICATION:
Must not be given IV as patient could develop shock. Should not be given
in severe thrombocytopenia & in hemostasis.

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES *
Frequency: Remove the prefilled syringe from the package. Lift syringe
by barrel, not by plunger.

Twist the plunger rod
clockwise until the threads are seated

Route: IM Keeping your hands behind the needle, grasp the guard with
free hand and slide forward toward needle until it is
completely covered and guard clicks into place. If audible
click is not heard, guard may not be completely activated

Place entire prefilled glass syringe with guard
activated into an approved sharps container for
proper disposal
