anend.Whenweconceiveadrawingasacomplete,immutableobject,wecomeunstuckbecausewesacrificetheopenness
and the inventive thinking that often result from a focused and critical engagement with process. Drawing integrates the
dynamicaspectsofidea,medium,process,andtheactualenvironment.Inmakingadrawing,ifanyoneoftheseisignored
oralternativelygivenundueemphasiswemaylosesightofthedrawingscapacitytoinformlandscapedesignpositively.

CourseDescription&Goals:Anintroductiontodrawingthatemphasizesspatialcommunicationandpictorial
language.Studentswillengagecriticallyintheprocessofcreativeexpression.

Adrawingisnotjustapersonalexpressionbutalsoatoolforobservingtheworld,developingdesignideasand
exploringspatialissues.Thestudentwilllearntodepictthreedimensionalobjectsandspacesinatwo
dimensionaldrawingformat.Architecturaldrawingsprovideanintellectualandanalyticalwaytoinvestigate
space,whereasmodelsallowthestudenttohaveanexperimental,physical,andimmediateexpressionofthree
dimensionalspace.

Thestudentwillbeintroducedtodrawinginperspectivebysketchingfromslidesandeventuallyfromplaces.You
willbecomeconfidentdrawingtreesandlandscapesbystudyingworksbygrandmasters,ultimatelydepicting
largerlandscapeswithselfassurance.Asthetermprogresses,projectswillbecomemorecomplex.Technical
skills,visualskills,andcompositionwillbediscussedintheorybutlearnedthroughpractice.Youwilllearnby
doing.

LearningObjectives:LandscapeDrawing~IntroductorySketchingandDrafting
Observetheworld,developdesignideasandexplorespatialandsiteissues.Designedasapreliminarydrawing
coursetobetakenconcurrentwiththeintroductorydesignstudio.Studentswilllearnto:

2. draftanobjecttoscaleanddepictitthreedimensionallyintwodimensionaldrawings(plansection

4. gatherexistinginformationaboutabuildingorspaceinordertocreatenewdrawings(elevations,
sections,etc.).

7. exploredifferentdrawingmedia(pencil,pen,contecrayon,charcoal,inkwash,oilpastels)

Critiquesanddiscussionsaboutworkareanessentialfacetofthelearningprocess.Youwillbeexpectedto
contributetothediscourseaspartofyourgrade.Additionally,eachstudentisexpectedto,attendalllectures,
studiosandreviews,andperformallprojectexpectationsinatimelymanner.

DepartmentalGradingGuidelines
Whiletheassignmentofgradesisultimatelythepurviewoftheinstructor,thedepartment
usesthefollowingguidelineforunderstandingappropriategradinginitscourses:
AOutstandingThisnotonlymeansfulfillingtherequirements,butimpressingandgoing
beyondtheinitialexpectationsoftheproject.Thestudenthasdemonstratedasuperior
graspofthesubjectmattercoupledwithahighdegreeofcreativeorlogicalexpression,
andstrongabilitytopresenttheseideasinanorganizedandanalyticalmanner.
BVeryGoodThestudenthasdemonstratedasolidgraspofthematerialwithanability
toorganizeandexaminethematerialinanorganized,critical,andconstructivemanner.
Theprojectsandinclassperformancerevealasolidunderstandingoftheissuesand
relatedtheoriesorliterature.
CAcceptableThestudenthasshownamoderateabilitytograspconceptsandtheories
fortheclass,workthat,whilebasicallyadequate,isnotinanywayexceptional.This
performanceinclassdisplaysabasicfamiliaritywiththerelevantliteratureandtechniques.
DUnacceptableTheworkdemonstratesaminimalunderstandingofthefundamental
natureofthematerialortheassignmentwithaperformancethatdoesnotadequately
examinethecoursematerialcriticallyorconstructively.Studentscannotgraduatefromthe
LandscapeArchitectureprogramwith2Dsinrequired550classes.
FFailureThestudenthasdemonstratedalackofunderstandingorfamiliaritywith
courseconceptsandmaterials.Theirperformancehasbeeninadequate.Failureisoften
theresultlimitedeffortandpoorattendancewhichmayindicatethatthestudentisnotin
theproperfieldofstudy.

(3)Homework
Homeworkwillbeassignedattheendofeachstudiomeeting.Allhomeworkmustbecompletedand
handedinthenextclassunlessthereisanexcusedabsence.Latehomeworkwillnotbeaccepted.

OwnershipofStudentWork
Itistheintentofthiscoursetoreturnasmuchworkaspossibletoeachstudent;however,itisalsothe
casethatexamplesofworkmustbekeptbytheDepartmentforitsprofessionalaccreditationandfor
purposesofexhibition.ShouldtheDepartmentretainyourdrawings,youwillbegiventheopportunityto

StudioExpectations
Muchofyourlearningwilloccurthroughyouractiveengagementinstudiobothduringclassandwhile
workingatyourstudiodeskduringnonclasstime.Thedistinctionbetweenstudioasaclassandstudioas
aspaceandasacommunityisquicklyblurredasyougetfocusedonprojectsandrelyonyourpeersfor
perspectiveandsupport.Youareexpectedtoengageinallactivities,includingsitevisits,drawing
exercises,projects,pinups,andprojectreviews.Youareexpectedtocontributetothestudioslearning
processthroughconversationsandcritiquesduringandoutsidestudiotime.Youshouldplantospend6
hoursperweekoutsideofclasstoread,completeassignments,andfinalizepresentations.

ProjectReviews:
Projectreviewsareopportunitiestopresentyourwork,respondtoquestions,considerother
interpretations,andgatherfeedback.Youareexpectedtobeatallreviewsfortheentireperiod.
Inordertoensureyourfullattention,projectswillusuallybeduepriortothedayofthereview.Ifyou
handinaprojectbuthaveanunexcusedabsenceatthereview,yourprojectgradewillbeadjusted
downwardafullgradestep.

Homework:
Projectstatementsoutlinethefinalexpectationsforeachproject.Inaddition,newassignmentsmaybe
givenduringthestudioandlecturesasawaytodirectyourwork.Readingassignmentsarerequired
homework.Studentsareexpectedtobecomeincreasinglyselfdirected,beginningtopacethemselvesto
completetheprojectdeliverablesintheallottedtimeframe.

DesignJournal
Journalassignmentsareintendedtocomplementinclassdrawingexercises.Thedesignjournalshouldbe
arunningcompilationofthoughts,notes,andsketches.Acollectionofjournalscanhelptoreflectonthe
developmentofskillsandprocess.Specificjournalassignmentsshouldbeaugmentedbysome
independentdrawingsandobservations.Remember,youwillneedtopaceyourselfandkeepupwith
yourjournalentries.Thejournalrepresentsalargeportionofyourfinalgrade.Lateassignmentswillbe
downgradedonegradestep.

Thissectionincludesrulesspecifyingusedepartmentequipmentincludingofprojectionequipment,

Submitteddrawings,models,photographs,orwrittenpapersforanyprojectassignedinLandscape
ArchitecturecoursesareconsideredthepropertyoftheDepartment.Theformattingofalldigital
submissionmustfollowthedepartmentguidelinesbecausetheywillberetainedinitsarchivesfor
exhibitionandaccreditationpurposes.

Allprojectswillbegradedandreturnedtothestudentatalocationdesignatedbytheinstructor.Should
yourdrawingsberetainedbytheDepartment,youwillbegiventheopportunitytoobtainaprintor
photographicrecordofyourwork.DepartmentfilesareOFFLIMITStostudents.

Attendance
TheDepartmentofLandscapeArchitecturerequiresattendanceinallofitsclasses.Theindividual
studentsdevelopmentasalandscapearchitectislargelydependentupontwoaspectsofeducation.First
istheexposuretoandassimilationofabodyofinformationwhichrelatestothefield.Secondisthe
applicationofthisknowledgethroughstudioprojectsandproblemsolvingskillsdevelopedthrough
critiques,reviewsandinteractionsduringeachproject.

TheRutgersLandscapeArchitecturecurriculumisdesignedtodevelopbothareas.Attendanceand
participationinalllecturesandstudiosareessentialifthestudentistoachievehis/hermaximum
potential.Unlessamorestrictpolicyisinplacebytheindividualinstructor,morethanthreeunexcused
absenceswillresultinastepreductioninyoursemestergrade.Eachadditionalthreeabsenceswillresult
inanotherstepreduction.Sincethecommonlectureispartofthestudio,missingthatwouldcountasan
additionalabsence.

Aminimumlevelofparticipationisdefinedasbeinginattendancefortheentiredurationofaclass
session.Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytobeinattendanceatallrequiredclassesandallpersonalplans
shouldbemadeinaccordancewiththeschedule.StudentsonacademicprobationhaveNOALLOWABLE
UNEXCUSEDABSENCES.Yourattendanceatjuriesorspecialseminarsscheduledinyourdesigncourseis
mandatoryfortheentiredurationofthesession.

DueDates
Exceptforcircumstancestrulybeyondthestudentscontrol,allassignmentsaredueatthedatesand
timesspecifiedthroughoutthesemester.Projectsthatareincompleteontheduedateshouldstillbe
submittedonthedateitisduetoreceiveatleastpartialcredit.Anyworksubmittedlatewillbepenalized
alettergradeforeachdaypastdue.Workingbeyondaduedateisbothunrealisticinaprofessional
settingandunfairtoyourclassmatesinthiscourse.

CreationofaStudioCommunity:NotesonStudioSpaceandtheUseofSharedFacilities
The design studio environment should reinforce and deepen the design theories and methods taught by
the instructor. The class is comprised of students with varied skill sets. It is expected that students will
worktogetherinthestudioonhomeworkassignments,andthatstudentswilllearnfromoneanother..
It is assumed that all students will respect one another, each others work, and the studio space held in
commonbyall.Eachstudentisexpectedtocreateeverydrawingfromscratchwithoutcopying.
Students are encouraged to work together in the studio outside of class times on their assignments and
drawingprojects

An ethic of stewardship should be extended to the studio environment as well as to the outdoor
environment. One of the most important ways of ensuring a culture of civility is to maintain a clean
workspace,keepingdesksandfloorscleanandpropertyundamaged.Becausewesharethebuildingwith
entomology, there are ongoing living experiments that must be respected: all spraying must take place
outdoors. Anyone who damages a surfaceby cutting into it, marking it with ink, ruining the surface
withadhesiveglue,etc.willbeheldresponsibleforthereplacementcostof$150.

Students may also use one of the lockers in Blake Hall to store studio supplies. Students must provide
theirowncombinationlockand,whiletheftsarerare,theydooccursoyoushouldsecureyoursupplies.
