(b) A piece of wire of length 10 m is cut into two pieces. One piece is bent to form a circle
and the other piece is bent to form a square. Show that, as the lengths of the two pieces

5 In this question, you should state clearly all distributions that you use, together with the values
of the appropriate parameters.
In a car-racing computer game, CarRider, a player competes against other players. To win a
match, the player has to finish the race in the first position. Suppose Pamela, on average, wins
four out of five matches and each match played is independent of other matches.
(i) Show that the probability that Pamela does not win all the matches in 12 randomly
chosen matches is 0.931. [1]
(ii) Supposing Pamela completes 12 matches in each day, use a suitable approximation to
find the probability that, in 50 randomly chosen days, Pamela does not win all the
matches in at most 47 days. [4]

. The club is awarded three points for a win,
one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. The outcome of each match is assumed to be
independent of the other matches.
In three consecutive matches that the club plays, calculate the probability that the club
(i) wins more than one match, [2]
(ii) obtains exactly 3 points, [3]
(iii) wins only the third match, given that the club obtains exactly 3 points. [3]

7 (a) Five couples are to be seated at a round table with numbered seats. Find the number of
ways such that each wife must sit next to her husband. [3]
(b) Mr Lin wants to repaint his four bedrooms. Each room can only be painted with one
colour. From a selection of six different colours, find the number of ways in which
the four rooms can be painted if
(i) there is no restriction on the colours used, [1]
(ii) there is no repetition of colours used, [1]
(iii) he chooses exactly two colours. [3]
8 In a particular school, students are encouraged to use social media to post their queries during
lectures. Data collected showed that on average there are queries during a randomly selected
55-minute lecture. You may assume that each query is independent of one another and the
queries occur singly.
Given that the probability that there are at least 20 queries in a randomly selected 55-minute
lecture is at least 0.4, find the least possible value of . [3]
For the rest of the question, assume the value of to be 21.
Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that during a 110-minute lecture, there are
at least 41 queries but fewer than 58 queries. [3]
A sample of three different 55-minute lectures is chosen at random. Find the probability that
there are 19 queries in the first lecture and more than 19 queries in exactly one of the two
remaining lectures. [3]
9 The masses of the girls and boys in a school have independent normal distributions. Their
means and standard deviations are summarized in the following table.
Gender Mean (kg) Standard deviation (kg)
Girls 47 5
Boys 53 4
(i) Find the probability that the difference of the masses of 2 randomly chosen boys is less
than 1.5 kg. [3]
(ii) Find the probability that the total mass of 2 randomly chosen boys is greater than twice
the mass of a randomly chosen girl. [3]
(iii) Find the probability that the average mass of 3 randomly chosen girls and 7 randomly
chosen boys is less than 51 kg. [3]
