Annotated Bibliography on Identity Theft

Anderson, Mike. "Massive Identity Spree Linked to Single Salt Lake Couple on the Run." 18
July 2012. Web. 13 Apr. 2014.
The suspects, Shantae Leah Stratton is in custody and Joseph Chatwin is still on the run; they
were stealing hundreds of driver licenses, passports, social security cards, and credit cards, taken
those from the victims car. The suspects even purchased a mobile home with a previous victims
ID and they had paid using a forged cashiers check. The police believe that there are
approximately 200 victims involved in this case. Mike Anderson is a reporter for this news. He
graduated from SUU and he has worked for ABC, FOX, in overall he has the credibility for this
information. On my IEP I would like to also focus on identity theft cases that are happening in
our community.

Federal Trade Commission. "FTC Announced Top National Consumer Complaints For2013." 27
Feb. 2014. Web. 11 Apr. 2014.
The Federal Trade Commission shares the statistic of the top consumer complaints of 2013. They
share that 1.6 billion dollars was lost from fraud overall. However the number one complaint
they had was identity theft. So they used statistics or logos to show how big of a problem identity
Mangalindan 2

theft is. The FTC is a government institution that gives the credibility to this source. I am using
this so I can show by the numbers in fraud situations identity theft is number one.

Levine, Adam, and Credit.com. "Tax Identity Theft: Why You're Vulnerable." ABC News. ABC
News Network, 06 Apr. 2014. Web. 11 Apr. 2014.
In this article he shows just how common identity theft is. Levins friend called him to tell him
that when she went to file her taxes her CPA told her that he could not submit it because it had
already been filed by someone who had stolen her identity. He goes on to tell us that his friend is
just a statistic in a problem that is increasing each year. He tells us that 14.6 million false returns
were filed in the last year. They stopped 50 billion dollars of false returns since 2012. I want to
use this article to show how the problem is increasing each year.

Market Watch Magazine. "Identity Theft Victim Thrown in Jail." 19 Feb. 2014. Web. 11 Apr.
2014.
In this article the author talks about a man named Erie Salgado who got his identity stolen ten
years ago in Puerto Rico. This man even ten years later is being accused for things he didnt do,
he was even being charged as a drug dealer and he has been arrested and put in jail for things he
has never done. So the person who stole his identity is doing more than stealing his credit, he is
also committing crimes in his name. This shows in pathos how it is affecting him not only
financially but personally, emotionally and giving him a bad reputation. This article was found in
the Market Watch Magazine. I want to use this to show others how your good name will be
ruined.

Safeinternetbanking.be. "Terrifying Video on Identity Theft; Dramatic or Accurate." 12 July
2013. Web. 12 Apr. 2014.
This video as made by Fedelfin, a bank lobby in Belgium. It shows how Tom Degroote, who
has almost 700 friends on Facebook; including the predator, who sent a phishing e-mail from
his real bank to get more valuable information. That is how it all started; the predator took over
his financial accounts and also his personal life. At the end they provide a website which is
safeinternetbanking.be giving this video credibility to this source. My IEP will center on how
identity theft is happening every day, when the wrong people get your personal information.

Wallace, Sarah, ed. "Dead Man's Identity Stolen by Ex-con." 27 Feb. 2013. Web. 12 Apr. 2014.
In this report, Sarah Wallace talks about Bobby James Standfier after his death; his identity has
been used since the late 90s. Louis Lisandro has used Standfiers identity for all this time; he
has been in and out of jail, committing different crimes such as: selling illegal drugs, possession
of gun, collecting government benefits, food stamps, and medical benefits. Sarah Wallace has
won different and prestigious awards for her investigative reports, giving her the credibility on
this topic. This report can help me on my IEP to prove that even after the victim is dead, his
family members and the society are affected with this crime.

Wallwork, Ellen. "Stole Identity to Try to Keep Baby." 13 Mar. 2014. Web. 13 Apr. 2014.
This article is about a pregnant woman named Kay Costin, who had her identity stolen by
another pregnant woman who tried to prevent her baby taken away by the authorities because
previously she had her three children removed from her. Kay found out that her identity was
stolen when a midwife came to her house asking to see her baby despite the fact that she was still
Mangalindan 4

pregnant. All of this stress caused her to have an emergency cesarean. The Walsall Healthcare
Trust investigated this case, strengthened the procedures when admitting a woman in labor and
also when they are discharged with their baby. This Healthcare Trust gives the credibility for this
source. Since my IEP is on identity theft I wanted to see that even though this incident might be
rare, it is happening.

Wood, Molly, ed. "When Identity Theft Hits Home." The New York Times
Company, 6 Feb. 2014. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
When people get credit cards in the mail or pre-approved credit they dont realize the harm and
damage that they can cause to their identity. In this article Molly Wood shows us what can
happen when this information gets into the wrong hands. She tells us how she got credit cards
she didnt even apply for. Also she would get letters in the mail denying her credit. Then one
day she got a Macys bill in her name, that is when she started to worry and called the stores
where the bills were coming from. Then she went on to call the three credit bureaus and also she
filled an online report to the police. The author shows us by reporting her findings shows
credibility and how serious an incident like this could be. I want to do my paper on identity theft
because someone in my family was recently a victim of identity theft.

Wood, Molly, ed. "Identity Theft Hits Home: The Aftermath." The New York Times, 12 Feb.
2014. Web. 10 Apr. 2014.
So this article is a follow up article to her last one on identity theft. She talks about how easy it
was for people to open accounts in her name. That a person opened or tried to open accounts in
her name at stores such as: Kohls, Macys, Frys Electronics, and Best Buy. And of those four
Mangalindan 5

stores, Best Buy is the only one that catches it and denies the credit. And the other three gave the
credit, and the purchases made were thousands of dollars. She comes to find out that someone
was using her information in Arizona to get water services for their home. This just shows us the
extent to which identity theft can go, this article goes into detail on this subject. So she is
showing us just how easy it is for someone to get credit at a store because they are not as strict as
they should be when they verify information. In my paper I will show how identity theft affects
peoples life.
