Asyouinvestigatevariousreplicationsolutions,younoticethatwitheachapproachtoreplication,synchronousor
asynchronous,severalkeyareasmustbeunderstood.EMCtypicallyreferstotheseasthepainpointsofremote
replication.Theyare:
Theimpactonresponsetimeofyourproductionapplication.Forexample,witharemotesynchronoussolution,
yourapplicationmustwaitfortheacknowledgementfromtheremotesystembeforeproceedingwiththenext
dependentwrite.Youalsohavespeedoflightissues,whichimpactthemaximumdistanceyourlocationscanbe
fromeachother.

EMCRecoverPointisanenterprisescalesolutiondesignedtoprotectapplicationdataon
heterogeneousSANattachedserversandstoragearrays.RecoverPoint providesmanyfeaturesthat
makeitauniqueandtestedsolutionforbackupandrecovery.
RecoverPointallowsfortheaccessofapointintimeimage,eitherlocallyoratanothersite,while
stillperformingreplication.Theabilitytoaccessdatafromacopyallowsfortestingwithout
sacrificingprotection.Thisfeaturealsoisintegratedwithvariousapplications,suchasExchange,
SQL,andVMware.Thisallowsforapplicationdrivenpointintimecopies.RecoverPointalsocanbe
usedwithVMAXsSRDFfeaturetocreateadditionalprotection.
Pointintimecopiescanbecreatedforeachwrite,ortheusercanchoosetheamountofdatalag
thatcanbetoleratedforan application.Thisoptionisconfigurableforeachgroupofvolumes,and
canbeeditedatanytime.

Therightremotereplicationsolutioncanlimityourexposuretoplannedandunplanneddowntime,
enablingnonstopoperation.Perhapsyoualsoneedtoprovideyourorganizationwithefficient
datareplicationtomeetcorporateorgovernmentalstandards,whilestillmeetingyourtotalcost
ofownershiprequirements.Inaddition,youneedaflexiblesolutionthatchangesasyourneeds
change.
Nomatterwhatyourchallengeis,thereisoneunderlyingtheme:dataprotectionandfaster

Usingreplicationsoftwaretomaintainacompletecopyofthedatainaremotelocationallowsfor
businesscontinuityandincreasedfunctionality.Whendisasterrecoveryisrequired,remote
replicationsoftwareandremoteclustersensurethatallyourmissioncriticalinformationhasbeen
captured.Usingreplicasratherthantapemeansyoucanbeupandrunninginhoursasopposedto
days.Inaddition,thesecondclustercanbeusedforapplicationtestingandremotebackups.

RecoverPointprovidesmanyfeaturesandbenefitsthatbuild onpreviousRecoverPointversions.
The multiplesitesfeatureallowsyoutokeepuptofourindividuallyjournaled copiesofyour
productiondata,enablinggreaterdataprotection, increasedaccesstodifferentpointintime(PIT)
copies,andawiderrangeofDR,testing,andbackuptopologies.Andwithsynchronousreplication
overIP,oneoftheseremotecopiescanbeasynchronouscopywithouttheneedforremotefibre
connectivity.Theintroduction ofvRPAs relievestheneedforphysicalRPAs.
TheintroductionofUnisphereforRecoverPointallowsforconsistentmanagementinterfacesand
methodologiesacrossEMCtechnologies.
TheRecoverPointRESTAPIinterfaceenablescustomscriptingandapplicationsviastandardRESTful
protocols.
ImprovedintegrationwithVMwareSiteRecoveryManager(SRM)allowsfortestingandfailoverto
anypointintimecopy.IntegrationofRecoverPointlocalreplicationandSRDFallowsforlocal
journalcopiesinconjunctionwithremoteSRDFcopies.Thisenablesaccesstolocalanypointin
timecopies,whilestillmaintainingSRDFfunctionality.
CompleteFIPS1402complianceensuresthattheRecoverPointenvironmentissecure.Other
performanceandscalabilityenhancements,suchas400MB/sreplicationforasynchronous
distributedconsistencygroups,enableevenmoreefficiencywiththesamephysicalconfiguration.

copiesforoperationalrecoveryorremotefordisasterrecovery.WithRecoverPoint4.0andabove,
recoverablecopiescanexistinmultiplephysicallocationssimultaneously.
RecoverPointisintegratedwithallofEMCsblockstorage,including VMAX(10K/20K/40K),VPLEX,
VNXseriesandtheVblock 300/700.WhenusingtheVPLEXwritesplitter,whichcomesinstalledin

supportedconfiguration.PleasenotethatRecoverPoint/SEsupportsamaximumoftwoclusters.
Additionally,RecoverPoint4.0supportssynchronousreplicationtoaremotecopyoverIP.
Previously,thiswasonlysupportedwithfibre connectivity.Regardlessofwhetheroverfibre orIP,
onlyoneremotecopyperRecoverPointconsistencygroupcanbereplicatedsynchronously.Sincea
localcopycanalsobesynchronous,thismeansthatRecoverPointcanmaintaintwosynchronous
copiesatthesametime.AgeneralguidelineforsynchronousreplicationoverIPisforthelinkto
havealatency(roundtrip)lessthan10ms.
Multiclusterconfigurationsallowforgreaterprotection,increasedaccesstoPiT copies,and
implementationofawiderangeofdisasterrecovery,testing,andbackuptopologies.Italsoenables
asinglepointofmanagementandminimizesthenumberofRPAsrequiredcomparedwithprevious

arrays.Inaddition,RecoverPointcantestreplicateddataonvirtualvolumeswithoutimpact
toproductionapplications.
BeforeRecoverPoint3.5therewerethreetypesofavailablewritesplitters:host,arrayand
intelligentfabricsplitters.AVPLEXSplittercontainsawritesplitterthatisbuiltintothe
VPLEXengine.ThisisasimplemethodtoimplementaRecoverPointbusinesscontinuity
solutiontoprotectthemobility,availability,andcollaborationofVPLEXAccessAnywhere
forbothdataandenterpriseapplicationswithVPLEX.
TheVPLEXwritesplittersupportslocalandRemoteReplicationusinganysupportedarray
type.TheRecoverPointVPLEXsplittersupportsvirtualizedenvironmentsandclustering
environments.TheseenvironmentsincludeVMwareHA,MicrosoftMSCS/Failover
clustering,OraclestretchedRAC,OracleOVMandAIXstretchedclusters.

TheRecoverPointAppliance(RPA) isthedataprotectioncontrollerforRecoverPoint.RPAnodes
utilizeprivateLANandsharedRPAvolumesforcommunicationsusingstandardTCPprotocol.No
FC/IPconvertersareneededtoreplicateacrosstheWAN.ThesetofRPAsateachcluster
constitutesanRPAcluster,whereeachclustercanincludebetweenoneandeightRPAs,asset
duringRecoverPointsysteminstallation.
Theclustersizemustbethesameatallclustersinaninstallation.Innormaloperation,allRPAsina
clusterareactiveallofthetime.Consequently,ifoneoftheRPAsinaclustergoesdown,the
RecoverPointsystemsupportsimmediateswitchoverofthefunctionsofthatboxtoanotherRPAin
thecluster.
Generation5RPAsperformhardwarestatusnotifications.Ifaharddriveorpowersupply
ontheRecoverPointappliancefails,ahardwareeventnotificationwillberaisedinthe
systemlogs.Ifconfigured,theeventwillalsocreateacallhomeevent,sendingasystem
requesttoEMCCustomerService.
