Industry Leadership
Extruded and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was developed by Sumitomo Electric Industries in 1960 as an advanced wire and cable insulating material. Possessing superior chemical and thermal resistance properties, PTFE ensured the high dielectric strength and long-term physical stability demanded by high performance wire insulation.
Further development revealed that by carefully controlling the base materials and manufacturing processes, a wide range of microporosity and void volumes could be repeatedly and consistently produced. By varying the void volume, thickness, open porosity and strength, Poreflon materials were processed into form factors optimized for filter media, moisture barriers, vents, gas diffusers, sealing materials, and a wide range of industrial and bio-technical applications.
After more than 45 years of continuous development, Sumitomo Electric offers the widest range of expanded PTFE performance capabilities. Controlled open porosities between 25 & 90% Micron ratings of 10M down to nanofiltration
Narrow-spread IPA bubble points of 10 to over 470 kPa Multiple form factors, including flat sheet, hollow fiber,
pre-configured modules, rope, tape & many others

Poreflon microporous tube retains all of the advantages of PTFE, with additional processes increasing mechanical strength, to meet a wide range of industrial applications. Low porosity versions are used as encapsulants and dielectrics, while high open porosities are specified to meet the high flow, high strength demands of backwashable microfiltration and nanofiltration applications. The chemical resistance and low friction coefficient of PTFE work together to reduce fouling, and lend higher cleaning efficacy in bundled arrays, resulting in lower operating costs over the life of the system.
