Benefits of Consumer Education for the individual and for society

To be able to make the right consumer choice for ones own circumstances and to accept and deal with the consequences when one hasnt chosen appropriately corresponds to the image of an emancipated consumer who is informed and responsible. In an ideal situation, educated consumers make their decisions keeping in mind sustainability, health and economic, social or political consequences of their consumer behaviour.

Benefits for the individual New attitudes, better knowledge and improved or new skills lead consumers to change their lifestyles. They are able to take responsibility and to participate in society, adopting an active role as consumers and citizens.

As individuals are mostly workers and consumers they might have to face a number of conflicting situations in their daily life. They often have to consider where their ultimate responsibilities lie. Understanding how the economy works, understanding ones own needs and wants, and understanding ones own role as a consumer or a producer in the economic system makes it easier for the individual, for instance, to communicate satisfaction or dissatisfaction as a consumer. Individuals will be better prepared to ask for information about goods and services, or to ask for help from the Consumer and Competition Division or from the Consumer Association. Educated consumers can make efficient use of their personal resources, such as money, goods, time and physical ability. Educated consumers understand their consumer rights and protect themselves and others. Educated consumers have a complex view of product quality. For example, quality is more than a good product for the cheapest price; it also means assessing production conditions. How is the product produced? Who is involved? Are all legal implications fulfilled, or are, for instance, children the producers? What is the ecological footprint of the product from the drawing board till final disposal? All these and other questions give consumers a new concept of quality when making choices.

Benefits for society - A better understanding of the relationship between consumers and producers and the role of the market economy might ease communication and understanding between the different players in the field.

Development of attitudes, skills and knowledge regarding common values, like sustainability, health promotion, responsible citizenship and solidarity, prevents social and societal problems like over-indebtedness, waste of resources and inappropriate working/living conditions. Consumers who are able and willing to be responsible can value the work behind a product or a service and accept more easily a higher price in order to secure the wages of the labourers. Consumers knowledge about the health implications of producing, using and recycling products, combined with a positive attitude towards health and certain health-related skills all facilitate adoption of a healthy lifestyle and reduce the costs within the health system. Consumers consideration of sustainability when making choices reduces costs for protecting the environment and helps maintain a secure local, national or regional economy.
