Cheating in college, a path to success or destruction?

Cheating has been on the gradual increase in recent years. According to a research in a public university in Michigan, USA, 50 percent of students admitted that they cheat while 85 percent of them were fearful of being caught cheating. Only 14 percent claimed that they had never cheated. Besides that one of the studies shows that 44 percent of faculties did not take any action on students who cheat. Cheating is done by several method and for several reasons, thus, requires actions to prevent them as to limit the consequences. It is undeniable that current technologies made cheating easier for students. Students usually use their hand phones, PDAs and internet connected laptop to cheat during exams. Besides that students can easily lift other peoples writing off the internet to finish their task or assignments. This was found out by professors of University of Maryland during the sting operation. 12 students were caught cheating in that operation. Students cheat because of several reasons. First of all to win, to pass, to graduate and to make money. Secondly because they are concerned about their future and some of the students think that they deserve to be rewarded. Lack of supervision of authorities and religious faith also cause the cheating problem to increase. Furthermore parents who fail to carry out their responsibility of instilling good manners in their children become one of the reasons why students cheat. (Callahan, 2006) This problem can be solved if all the parties teach students not to cheat in the first place. They should help the students to build moral values. On top of that buildings wireless internet hotspot should be turned off during examination. The instructor must make sure the students clear their calculator memory and relinquish their cellphones before entering the exam hall. It is better to conduct the exam in testing center where electronic devices are generally banned. (Glater, 2006) The consequences of cheating is not as simple as it may look. In the future the students will be given with life sustaining decisions in their careers, and they are expected to be honest. Cheating meanwhile will cause the students to cheat to attain a wealthy life. It also strikes at the very foundation of a fair society. According to (Callahan, 2006), he believed we all have the responsibilities to make personal choice, as Mahatma Gandhi saif, " be the change you want to see in the world". In a nutshell, although the method of cheating and their reason may vary with time, stern actions should be made to prevent the prevalent cheating trend so that a fair society with moral and ethics can be sustained in future.
