Assignment On Synchronous Generators

This document contains 4 questions regarding synchronous generators connected to power systems. Question 1 involves calculations for a 3-phase 5 kVA synchronous generator including determining internal voltage, phasor diagrams, and effects of increasing field excitation and prime mover power. Question 2 involves calculations for a 3-phase 2000 kVA synchronous generator including determining internal voltage and short circuit current, and delivering rated current at lagging power factor. Question 3 provides parameters for a 100 MVA synchronous generator and asks for calculations of synchronous reactance, internal voltage, and torque required from the prime mover. Question 4 asks for plots and calculations showing effects of reducing field flux on real and reactive power output and line current for a 470 kVA synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus

Lahore University of Management Sciences EE 352: Electromechanical Systems (Spring 2014) Assignment 5: Synchronous Generators Due Date: Thursday

10th April by 5:00 pm (TA room inside the EMS Lab)

Instructions: Show all the steps. Answers without calculations would not be accepted.
Q1. A 3, 5 kVA, 208 V, 4-pole, 60 Hz Y-connected synchronous machine has negligible stator winding resistance and a synchronous reactance of 8 ohms per phase at rated terminal voltage. The machine is operated as a generator in parallel with a 3, 208V, 60Hz power system. a) Determine the internal generated voltage and the power angle when the machine is delivering rated kVA at 0.8PF lagging. b) Draw the properly labeled phasor diagram for the above condition c) If the field excitation is now increased by 20% (keeping the prime-mover power constant, assume the operation in the linear part of the magnetization curve), find the stator current as well as the reactive power supplied by the machine. d) With the field current as in part (a) the prime-mover power is slowly increased (keeping its speed constant). What is the maximum power (in kW) this machine is capable of delivering? What are the corresponding values of armature current and the reactive power? e) Draw the phasor diagram for the condition in part (d). Q2. A 3, 2000 kVA, 11 kV, 1800 rpm Y-connected synchronous generator has an armature resistance of 1.5 and synchronous reactance of 15 per phase. (a) The field current is adjusted to obtain the rated terminal voltage at the open circuit (i) Determine the internal generated voltage EA. (ii) If a short circuit is applied across the machine terminals, find the stator current. (b) The synchronous machine is next connected to a power grid and it is made to deliver the rated current at 0.8 pF lagging. (i) Determine the internal generated voltage EA. (ii) Determine the % increase in the field current relative to the field current of part (a). (Assume the operation in the linear part of the magnetization curve) (iii) Determine the maximum power this synchronous machine can deliver for the excitation current of part (b). Neglect RA. Q3. A 100-MVA 12.5-kV 0.85-PF-lagging 50-Hz two-pole Y-connected synchronous generator has a per-unit synchronous reactance of 1.1 and a per-unit armature resistance of 0.012. (a) What are its synchronous reactance and armature resistance in ohms? (b) What is the magnitude of the internal generated voltage EA at the rated conditions? What is its torque angle at these conditions? (c) Ignoring losses in this generator, what torque must be applied to its shaft by the prime mover at full load?

Q4. Assume that a two-pole Y-connected synchronous generator rated at 470 kVA, 480 V, 60 Hz and 0.85 PF lagging is connected to a 480-V infinite bus, and that its field current has been adjusted so that it is supplying rated power and power factor to the bus. You may ignore the armature resistance when answering the following questions. (a) What would happen to the real and reactive power supplied by this generator if the field flux (and therefore EA) is reduced by 5%? (b) Plot the real power supplied by this generator as a function of the flux as the flux is varied from 75% to 100% of the flux at rated conditions. (c) Plot the reactive power supplied by this generator as a function of the flux as the flux is varied from 75% to 100% of the flux at rated conditions. (d) Plot the line current supplied by this generator as a function of the flux as the flux is varied from 75% to 100% of the flux at rated conditions.
