As hotter temperatures draw
closer and the end of the school
year comes into view, families
may begin to plan their summer
vacations. For the lucky kinder-
garteners in Karen Marinoff s
class at the Beechwood School, a
summer vacation trip came a lit-
tle bit early.
The kids get so excited. They
talk about it all year, Marinoff
said.
What Marinoff was referenc-
ing was her class virtual trip to
Costa Rica, which took place from
April 22 to April 30.
Weeks before the virtual trip
was planned, students and Mari-
noff had a discussion about
where they wanted to travel.
Ive been doing this for years,
and weve been to a lot of places.
We try to use the kids input as to
where we are going each year,
Marinoff said.
In past years, classes have visit-
ed China, Mexico, France and
many more destinations, all from
their Haddonfield classroom.
After one of her students,
Garett Needham, mentioned
going on a trip with his family to
Costa Rica, Marinoff decided that
would be an exciting place for the
rest of the class to visit on their
virtual voyage. The theme for the
virtual trip was appropriately ti-

On April 21, Mary E. Petrovich
(nee Gentry), formerly a 30-year
resident of Haddonfield, passed
away at the age of 78 in Philadel-
phia.
Petrovich was the beloved wife
for 50 years of the late Frank P.,
M.D., and the loving mother of
Laura Cheney (Peter) of Asbury
Park, Eric Petrovich of Barring-
ton and Tanya Parker (John) of
Cherry Hill.
Petrovich was the devoted
grandmother of Ruby and Layla
Petrovich, and Lily, Noah and
Sage Parker.
She was the dear sister of Mar-
garet Niedosik, Irene Zuk, Henry
Gentry (Shirley), the late Dolores
Bovio and the late Catherine
Dudo, and sister-in-law of Robert
Dudo.
Mrs. Petrovich graduated from
West Philadelphia Catholic Girls
High School.
She was a member of the West
Jersey Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
Her greatest joy in life was
being with her grandchildren.

The following is on file with the
Haddonfield Police Department.
On April 22 at 10:11 a.m., police
responded to a call from the First
Baptist Church of Haddonfield. A
burglary was reported at the
church, with disturbances to the
garage of the church and what
appeared to be a forced entry
through a rear window of the
church. Among the stolen items
were two chainsaws. An attempt
was made by suspects to hide fur-
ther proceeds and possibly return
at a later date to pick up the
items. The items were returned to
the owners.
The week of April 16 saw the
Bulldawg boys tennis team of
Haddonfield Memorial High
School continue its winning
ways.
Haddonfield picked up 4-1 vic-
tories over Montgomery High
School, as well as Mainland Re-
gional High School, and it defeat-
ed Paulsboro High School, 5-0.
The Haverford School, based in
Pennsylvania, defeated the
Dawgs 4-1. As of April 23, Had-
donfields record stood at 15-3.

hirty-one words are ingrained
in our brains forever, thanks to
the fact that we attended school
in this country:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of
the United States of America, and to
the Republic for which it stands, one
Nation under God, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all.
The pledge was written more than
120 years ago, and Congress formally
adopted it in 1942. But it wasnt until
Flag Day in 1954 that the Pledge be-
came a point of controversy.
That year, while the U.S. was fully
encapsulated in the Cold War, two
words, under God, were added to the
Pledge to differentiate the U.S. from
the concept of communist atheism.
At the time, there wasnt much to it.
A group of Jehovahs Witnesses chal-
lenged the Pledge in the 1950s, but the
legal fight against the words under
God didnt pick up steam until more
recently.
Court cases in 2002 in Massachu-
setts and 2006 in Florida found in the
plaintiffs favor, but ultimately, in 2010,
the phraseology was upheld by a U.S.
Court of Appeals.
Now, a family in New Jersey is
suing the Matawan-Aberdeen Region-
al School District because, as the
American Humanist Association says,
the phrase, marginalizes atheist and
humanist kids as something less than
ideal patriots.
The school districts lawyer says in-
dividual students dont have to partici-
pate. A similar case in Massachusetts
that is in court could pave the way for
a decision in this New Jersey case.
But isnt this a little ludicrous? Sim-
ply saying the Pledge, or having to
hear it, does not infringe on a stu-
dents rights. The Pledge is more about
history than it is religion, even with
the words under God included.
Even though many school districts
have changed the labels to winter
break and spring break, the reason
students get off from school is because
of religious holidays Christmas and
Easter. Many school districts also
close for the Jewish holidays of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Religion and history go hand in
hand in this country. Its hard to have
one without the other. Our schools
teach about this history through
books, homework and tests, but also
through breaking for religious holi-
days and by saying the Pledge. And as
long as that history doesnt violate the
Constitution, then we shouldnt
change that history.

Residents are responsible to
protect charm of Haddonfield
Weve all driven past it and admired it a
thousand times, perhaps taking it for
granted as one of Haddonfields classic
homes and assuming it would be here for-
ever. Its that beautiful granite home at 605
Warwick, on a pristine, tree-lined property
at the corner of Warwick and Gill roads.
Did you know that a developer has pur-
chased this property, and has proposed par-
tial demolition and sub-dividing the prop-
erty so that two or three new homes can be
built?
This sort of project is becoming an epi-
demic in Haddonfield. It affects everyone,
not just those of us who live in the immedi-
ate neighborhood.
Besides the elimination of the charm
and quaint feel of our Haddonfield neigh-
borhoods, the cumulative impact of the
widespread new construction cannot be ig-
nored.
More houses mean more water runoff.
More runoff means more water in our
basements. Fewer trees mean less natural
water absorption. More houses mean more
hookups to our utilities infrastructure,
which is already maxed out.
Big and new houses on busy corners
mean potential traffic safety hazards.
Another classic Haddonfield home is
about to be changed forever, but we are not
powerless to stop this travesty from hap-
pening again.
There is a very important Haddonfield
Planning Board meeting on May 6 in Bor-
ough Hall, at 7:30 p.m. All concerned Had-
donfield residents should attend this meet-
ing.
While the mission of Haddonfields plan-
ning board is to enforce our building codes
and ordinances, it also has a responsibility
to protect the charm and aesthetic integri-
ty of the Haddonfield neighborhoods
which we all know and love.

Last year, the Cam-

den County Freeholder
Board created the Divi-
sion of Programming
for People with Dis-
abilities. Since that
time, the division has
been busy scheduling
events and program-
ming expressly for
Camden County resi-
dents with special
needs.
This years schedule includes some-
thing for everyone. The calendar is
quickly filling with arts and crafts
classes, dances, special camps, adaptive
rowing clinics, exercise classes, golf les-
sons, nature walks, dance lessons, spe-
cial needs bike clinics and much more.
We are excited to offer these activities
and recreational opportunities to resi-
dents of Camden County who might not
have other opportunities to access this
type of programming.
Camden Countys beautiful Bound-
less Field at Challenge Grove Park in
Cherry Hill will be home to numerous
great events. The Challenger League of
Cherry Hill and Camden County Mira-
cle League both play baseball on the new
field designed especially for them. Chal-
lenge Grove Park will also host the first-
ever outdoor wheelchair basketball
tournament and Playdates for children
ten and under later this year.
The Freeholder Board is proud to con-
tinue to host the popular special popula-
tions dance series. Each dance is
attended by over 150 residents aged 18
and over. There will also be upcoming
dance lessons designed to help develop
coordination and promote physical fit-
ness while having fun.
Camp Sunnyside celebrates 35 years
of serving children with disabilities age
7 and older this summer at Camden
County College. Boys and girls not
available during the day dont have to
miss out on the fun with Camp Sunny-
side Night Camp taking
place in July.
To get the creative
juices flowing, a series
of arts and crafts
classes will be offered
to our special needs
population throughout
the spring and fall. We
are also developing the
first ever Camden
County Special Needs
Choir for adults and teenagers.
Families can get into the great out-
doors with our nature walks in conjunc-
tion with the Camden County Division
of Environmental Affairs. This educa-
tional series will visit several of
countys more than 2,000 acres of park-
land throughout the year.
To help residents explore their ath-
letic sides, specially designed exercise
classes, golf lessons for kids and adults,
and adaptive rowing clinics are being of-
fered. The adaptive rowing clinics let
participants with physical disabilities
receive hands-on knowledge and under-
standing of the sport of rowing.
The Freeholders are very excited to
introduce the I-Can Bike Clinic this Au-
gust. The clinic is designed to teach kids
and adults with disabilities how to ride
a special adaptive bicycle.
We partnered with the Camden River-
sharks to host the New Jersey Lightning
Beep Baseball team in an exhibition
game on May 24. The blind and visually
impaired ballplayers will excite the
crowd with the game of Beep Baseball
in anticipation of a local team.

Freeholders expand programming
for the disabled

For his Eagle Scout project, Haddonfield Memorial High School senior Robert Keegan collected DVDs to
create libraries for two separate shelters. One of the shelters is a Crossroads shelter for young mothers
and babies in Burlington. In total, more than 600 DVDs and videos were collected. When we brought the
boxes full of DVDs into the shelters and set up the libraries, everyones face lit up like it was Christmas

Super Storm Sandy, including the
enormous ongoing effort of clean
up and rebuilding.
The Gratzels, pastoring in
Manasquan, which was especial-
ly impacted by the storm, imme-
diately responded, establishing
the Help Center. Hundreds have
entered their doors for assistance
and shelter.

The Haddonfield Historical So-
ciety will host a book club on Sun-

Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh: 1680-
1763.
Locals and coeditors Doug
Rauschenberger and Kathy Tassi-
ni will lead the discussion, high-
lighting the challenges and de-

Members of Haddonfield
American Legion Post 38 invite
residents to join them in observ-
ing Memorial Day on Monday,
May 26. The post will conduct its
annual Memorial Day Parade,
stepping off promptly at 10 a.m.
The parade will form up with its
forward position at Kings High-
way and Chestnut Street, facing
toward Haddonfield Memorial
High School. The parade will end
at the high school. After the pa-
rade, a memorial service will be
conducted.
The parade will include the
Post 38 Color Guard and members
of the post, the HMHS marching
band, the mayor and commission-
ers, the memorial service flag pre-
senters the Daughters of the
American Revolution War of 1812
chapter, the Ladies of the Grand
Army of the Republic, Girl
Scouts, boy Scout troops 64 and
65, and Cub Scout packs 64 and 65,
the Jack Schweiker Composite
Unit of the Civil Air Patrol, and
an apparatus of Haddon Fire Co.
No. 1 and the Ambulance Associa-
tion.
If the parade is cancelled due
to inclement weather, the ceremo-
ny will be held in the HMHS audi-
torium at 11 a.m.
The memorial service will
honor the fallen men and women
of nine wars, from the American
Revolution to the present-day con-
flict in Afghanistan.
The service will include nor-
mal military honors, chaplains
prayers, remarks by Post 38 Com-
mander Brian Fitzgerald, and re-
marks from the mayor.
There will be a special place-
ment of flags for each war, and a
reading of In Flanders Fields
by the HMHS honor society, and
music by the Pick-Up Band.
Refreshments, donated anony-
mously, will be served following
the ceremony.

Benjamin Lefler, a 2011 gradu-
ate of Haddonfield Memorial
High School, has won a Barry M.
Goldwater Scholarship and Excel-
lence in Education Foundation.
Lefler, a junior in the honors
program at the University of
Delaware majoring in chemistry,
is among 283 Goldwater Scholars
selected on the basis of academic
merit from a field of more than
1,100 mathematics, science, and
engineering students across the
U.S.
Competition for the scholar-
ship is exceptionally intense. Uni-
versities are allowed to nominate
only four undergraduate students
per year to receive the final schol-
arship.
Lefler is
currently con-
ducting re-
search at the
University of
Delaware on
the synthesis
and character-
ization of por-
phyrinoid de-
rivatives,
which are mol-
ecules that are similar to chloro-
phyll, the light harvester in
plants. The focus of the laborato-
ry in which he works is on solv-
ing problems related to the envi-
ronment, with a particular em-
phasis on renewable energy stor-
age and conversion. Specifically,
Lefler is testing the use of solar
energy to convert carbon dioxide
into synthetic liquid fuels.
My love of chemistry was in-
spired by Doc Sohn, Lefler said.
Lefler was referring to Dr. John
Sohn, his advanced placement
chemistry teacher at HMHS.
Chemistry is a powerful and
elegant study. It is everything in
nature and in society. It provides
the explanation of everything we
see, and the way to unlock endless
possibilities, and I found my way
to it through Doc Sohn. He made
chemistry relevant. He intro-
duced me to this world of possi-
bilities to make the world in
which we live better, Lefler said.
In addition to the Goldwater
Scholarship, Lefler has also won
the American Chemical Society
Award in chemistry, the Ameri-
can Chemical Society Division of
Inorganic Chemistry Award in
the inorganic chemistry category,
and the C. Frank Shaw III Under-
graduate Inorganic Research Fel-
lowship.
Last summer, Lefler conducted
research as a University of
Delaware Department of Chem-
istry and Biochemistry Alumni
Fellow and Plastino Scholar,
which he will do again this sum-
mer.

The Haddonfield Board of
Commissioners conducted a first
reading of a highly anticipated
Historic Preservation/District
Ordinance at the April 22 meet-
ing.
The ordinance repealed a for-
mer one, which Commissioner
Neal Rochford said has not re-
ceived changes in about 40 years.
The board agreed that updating
the ordinance for residents living
in homes within the boundaries
of the historic district would be
beneficial to them, as well as the
Planning Board.
Mayor Jeff Kakso assured resi-
dents that the new ordinance
would in no way further expand
or cut the boundaries of the his-
toric district. Instead, the ordi-
nance was seen as necessary to
the board for other reasons.
The ordinance is for land de-
velopment and property develop-
ment only for the purpose of
existing structures in the dis-
trict, Kasko said. We had to
clean up and modernize the ordi-
nance.
Regarding fixing existing his-
toric structures and making
changes to the buildings and resi-
dences that fall within this cate-
gory, the ordinance is meant as a
basic guide for property owners
to be able to make updates, while
still maintaining the historic
character of buildings.
Commissioners mentioned
that homeowners who have
homes that fall within the bound-
ary of the district should have
been notified in the process of
purchasing their homes.
Commissioners explained that
to properly update the ordinance,
which could have been consid-
ered historic in some ways, a
working group consisting of plan-
ning and zoning board members
as well as others have been mak-
ing updates to the ordinance
through a grant obtained by the
leading member of the Haddon-
field Civic Association, Lee Al-
bright.
The grant further paid for con-
sulting group Carter, Van Dyke &
Associates to help guide the up-

Rochford mentioned that
the goals of the group included
cleaning up vague and confusing
language in the old ordinance,
and creating guidelines
that allow residents wanting to
renovate or change their homes
in some way easier to begin the
process.
The actual forms associated
with such projects were revised,
and more detailed information
was added into the new ordi-
nance.
I think this was a great group
effort by a lot of different people,
Rochford said.
In a special agenda handed out
by Rochford, special thanks was
given to the ad hoc committee,
borough employees Sharon Mc-
Cullough and Steve Walko, resi-
dents who took prior surveys
about their homes for the board,
and many others who helped with
the process.
In other news:
The board gave authoriza-
tions for a few events in town, in-
cluding the May 10 Annual Herb
Sale, hosted by the Haddonfield
Garden Club, and the Lions Club
Lizzy Haddon Invitational Bas-
ketball Tournament that will be
held May 10 and 11.
The board authorized the ap-
plication for a 35-year Communi-
ty Development Block Grant for
$14,500. The grant will be used to
make improvements to an acces-
sory borough structure.
Certificates of appreciation
were given to Stephen
Camiscoli and Stuart Holloway
for their contributions and dedi-
cation to helping police solve re-
cent burglaries within Haddon-
field and surrounding communi-
ties.

To prepare the classroom to
look as exotic and lush with
greenery as possible, the students
helped Marinoff and teacher
Rachel Cooper grow many flower-
ing plants throughout the class-
room. Colorful and dynamic mu-
rals of rain forest scenes and
trees lined the walls.
The work was also incorporat-
ed in the Beechwood school-wide
art show, which Marinoff makes
sure coincides with the virtual
vacation trips every April.
The virtual trip in its entirety
did not just encourage group to-
getherness and creativity, but
also math, science, writing, food
tasting and more.
Were learning about Costa
Rica as we go. We have had a les-
son about volcanoes, and learned
a lot about the rain forest, Mari-
noff said.
After a bag check at the corner
of the classroom-turned-airport
on April 22, students departed US
Air flight 2055 to San Jose, and
headed to their hotel.
Students then traveled to a na-
ture conservatory, where they
were guest naturalists. Each stu-
dent, or guest naturalist, had to
present a poster and short speech
about one animal native to the
Costa Rican rain forest.
They each made a poster of
an animal from the rain forest
each person researched an ani-
mal to become an expert we got
off the plane, got to the hotel,
then naturalists told us about na-
tive animals, Marinoff said.
Marinoff credited two ex-stu-
dents, Needhams older brothers
Wyatt and Riley, with helping her
come up with the idea of animal
presentations for this years class
trip.
Costa Rican dish Arroz con
leche was whipped up by Mari-
noff, and served as a snack to the
hungry travelers at the end of the
day.
The rest of the week followed a
packed itinerary, which included
virtual visits to a coffee planta-
tion, butterfly farm, pineapple
farm, zip lining spot, farm stand
and of course the rain forest.
I like how they get to be com-
pletely immersed in the culture,
Cooper said.
The students also visited Tor-
tuguero National Park of Costa
Rica, a banana plantation and a

They get to go to landmarks,
they get to taste the food, and they
really get a full experience of
somewhere new, Cooper said.
The week was topped off by a
family dinner to El Sitio in
Collingswood, where families,
siblings and friends of the virtual
travelers enjoyed a dinner. Sam-
pled food included fried yucca,
empanadas and Tres Leches
cakes. Marinoff said that about 70
people attended dinner.
The virtual trip to Costa Rica
has proven to be a memorable ex-
perience for all involved, as have
many past vacations.
In Marinoff s first year of com-
ing up with the idea for a virtual
vacation in 2004, Beechwood
kindergarteners visited Hawaii.
A few years after, her class took
the virtual leap to Africa. This
past year, her now 13-year-old stu-
dents, who so fondly remembered
their trip to Africa, came back to
visit the classroom in which they
took their virtual quest.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School students, also former stu-
dents of Marinoff s, dropped by
Beeachwood recently to teach the
kindergarten class a little bit of
Spanish before they headed to
their Spanish-speaking destina-
tion.
The Spanish lesson was paired
with the kindergarten explorers
making their very own travel doc-
uments, which included pass-
ports and journals to document
the trip.
They learn about how to plan
a trip just to learn about
places, where things are and how
they fit into the world, Marinoff
said.
Marinoff and Cooper agreed
that virtual trips will continue in
the future, and hopefully inspire
those involved to experience
other cultures not just virtually,
but in reality as well.
The class extended thanks to

Billingsley, Monica Kinney, Jack-
ie Incollingo, Beechwood teacher
Sue Hagan and Grandmom Win-
kler for helping to make their
Costa Rican journey possible.
