Jan Tschichold

Jan Tschichold was a seminal German typographer and author in the development of 20th century graphic design. He helped spread Modernist graphic design through his writings and work promoting sans-serif typefaces, geometric construction, and asymmetrical composition designed for machine typesetting. After fleeing Nazi Germany, he worked as a book designer in Switzerland and questioned some of the absolute rules of modern typography. Tschichold designed books for publishers and typefaces, and was typographic designer for Penguin Books, where he specified future typography for their paperback series.
