Monthly Report for April 2014

Discipline Summary In March based on 3 615 FTEs in our schools, there were a total of 25 suspensions for breaches of the School Act and/or the Code of Conduct within schools. The main areas for suspensions were: Fighting Controlled Substance Non Compliance Bullying 10 9 5 1

In cases where a weapon or a controlled substance is involved, the RCMP is informed. School Presentation The Board began the day with a presentation from the Devereaux school band under the direction of teacher, Orycia Richer. Cognitive Coaching Update Principal Amanda Roberts did a presentation on the current impact of cognitive coaching in the District. Year 4 . Building capacity in the learning community. This is the connecting piece for many special projects and the basic work of the district. Primary Literacy Project Update Members of the Project Facilitation Team (Sue Schnyder, Susan Lovell, Candy Clouthier and Leslie Lambie) presented an update on the status of the Primary Literacy Project. Of the sixty teachers who originally signed up to participate in this professional development and targeted work with students in K-3, fifty-five remain active and the early results in student achievement are very promising. Rolla Request Joanne Dueck represented the school to hear the Boards response to previous requests. The Board moved to approve Rolla School to: change the name of the school to one decided upon by the PAC of Rolla Elementary

School Happenings McLeod received funding from Spectra for a healthy eating program TRE held a grade 4-6 bridge building event with qualified engineers judging the quality of their projects DCSS grade 10 science students (Kaitlin Gabriel and Adriana Hankins) work was presented in a very unique video format Beautiful Work Fair over 300 viewers attended this display at the local Trade Fair on the weekend of April 11-12. Canalta hosted a handyman project in partnership with Northern Lights College, School District and community tradespeople In the CSS partnership with Northern Lights College, eleven students are engaged in various dual credit courses and experiencing great success At the recent BC School Superintendents Association Forum, Superintendent, Kathy Sawchuk, received a Distinguished Service Award

Special Projects: The Schools on Board program is again underway. A number of high school students from across the country will travel the Northwest Passage with the crew of the Amundsen in September 2014. DCSS student, Nina Xiang will represent SD #59. The School District is engaged in a partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, Murphy Oil, Encana and Northern Lights Foundation to train 80-100 high school students in First Aid and H2S Alive. These are basic tickets needed for employment in many jobs typically filled by high school summer students. A partnership between South Peace Campus and SD#59 Facilities Department for introducing high school students to the trades is proving to be very successful in engaging student interest in school. Grad Fest Committee Request The Board moved to approve the activities as presented in a letter from the DCSS Grad Fest Committee.
