Project Description

The document outlines a numerical project to predict the steady-state 2D internal temperature profile of a container cooled by fluid at 27°C. Students are to analyze temperature profiles for different convection coefficients along one side of the container, ranging from 10 to 100 W/m2-K. A grid independence test must be performed to justify grid size. Results should include line plots of temperature vs convection coefficient along centerlines and a contour plot for coefficients of 10 and 100 W/m2-K. Observations are to be summarized in a 6 page report with code appendix.

ME 3345 Numerical Project Due 03/07/2014 The operation and expected lifetime of electronic devices packed inside a container

are very sensitive to temperature. This container is cooled by fast moving fluid at temperature of 27 C. In z direction container is very long and it can be assumed temperature variation is negligible in this direction. Due to the different thermal properties of packed material inside the container, it has a different thermal conductivity in the x (10 W/m-K) and y (20 W/m-K) directions (see figure below). Heat is generated inside this container at a constant volumetric rate of 100,000 3 W/m .Your assignment is to predict the steady-state 2-D internal temperature profile (in xy cross-section of the container) for five different values of the convection coefficient on the sides along y-direction of the container - 10, 30, 50, 70 and100 W/m2-K. The other two sides (along x-direction) have a constant surface convection coefficient (100 W/m2-K), see figure below. The same constant-temperature cooling fluid (T = 27C) is used for all sides. For simplicity, the container can be modeled as a 2-D cross section, with a line of symmetry as shown in the figure below. The dimensions are included in the figure, and you may assume a unit depth. Perform analysis and compare the results for different values of heat transfer coefficients as mentioned above using kx =10 W/m-K, ky =20 W/m-K) . The project should be in following format (12 point font, times new roman, single spacing). 1. Abstract: Summarize what are you objectives and what did you observe in a single paragraph. 2. Introduction: (about 1.5 pages) A discussion of your approach, descritized equations, methodology for solution 3. Results and discussion (about 3.5 pages)- (a) Grid independence: In the discussion, please justify the selection of your grid size by performing grid independence test. (b) Line plots: Provide two plots (Temperature ~ hy heat transfer coefficient on y surface) first plot for the temperatures at the five points along the x-centerline of the computational domain and second for the five points along the y-centerline of the computational domain (see the example picture below for these plots). (c) Contour plots: temperature contour plot for two cases, hy = 10 and 100. W/m2-K (d) Summarize all important observations. 4. Conclusions one paragraph 5. Appendix - a written copy of your code (Matlab, C/ C++ or Fortran) with brief comments (this is not included in 6 pages) You are required to submit the following for this project: The printed report of no more than 6 pages (from abstract to conclusion) + appendix (code) should be handed on due date. You will lose marks if your main report is longer than 6 pages- 5% cut in marks for each additional page you will add. Note: You can make a group of maximum three students for this project.

Line plots should correspond to these points (Ignore the kx, ky and q in this figure. Use the values given in text in previous page).
