Panels and Push-Buttons: Geometry and Material Panel

1. The document provides instructions for installing an MCRInstaller.exe file and setting the path variable to run a finite element analysis software program. 2. It describes the various input panels for specifying the geometry, material properties, mesh, applied voltage, and other analysis parameters. 3. The output panel will display the maximum displacement and stress in the beam element when the user clicks the "ANALYZE" button to run the finite element analysis.

Run the MCRInstaller.exe. The procedure is simple. Right Click on My computer. Go to Properties. Click the Advanced Tab.

Click the nvironment variables button. !et path as C"#Program $iles#MAT%A&#MAT%A& Component Runtime#v'(#bin#)in*+. I, the path variable has some text already in it- Give a semicolon and append C"#Program $iles#MAT%A&#MAT%A& Component Runtime#v'(#bin#)in*+ .ouble/click on II!c M!!tatic.exe. PANELS and PUSH-BUTTONS
Geometry and Material panel The user can enter the geometrical parameters like thickness and )idth o, each layer. The user can also enter the values ,or the material parameters like youngs modulus and the poisons ratio o, the material being used. The de,ault values are sho)n and )ill be used by the program during the execution o, the A0A%1! button. I, one )ants to use di,,erent values- go ahead and change the values. The usual operations o, CTR%23- CTR%24 etc- )ill )ork here too. MESH panel 0ote that the grid sho)n in the ,igure is not to scale. The hori5ontal and the vertical grid si5e can be set by the user. The hori5ontal grid si5e )ill ultimately de,ine the length o, the moving element. The vertical grid si5e de,ines the gap bet)een the di,,erent layers. There are t)o levels o, mesh re,inement that can be set by the user. The yello) colored line represents the underneath electrode. The de,ault geometry sho)n is that o, the )hite colored moving element- a ,ixed/,ixed beam)ith the electrode lying underneath it. nter 3oltage &utton. This allo)s ,or the entry o, the voltage bet)een the electrode and the moving element. The ,irst level o, mesh re,inement )ill use one element per grid. The %evel + )ill give a higher level o, mesh re,inement. In the level +- there is one additional node bet)een each grid points. As you )ill see- %evel + analysis )ill give only a marginal improvement in the output values. Pull-in Estimate Panel Click on the 3A%6AT button to evaluate the pullin voltage. This is based on lumped modeling. 0ote that this gives only an approximate estimate o, the pull/in value. ACTION panel A0A%1! . I, clicked )ill result in an analysis and give output in the 76TP6T panel.

R .RA8 . $7RM . !9AP 8hen clicked- )ill redra) the de,ormed shape o, the moving element using the !CA% $ACT7R entered in the same panel. A0IMAT 8hen clicked- )ill sho) the de,ormed shapes o, the beam a,ter successive instants o, time. This )ill be done : times. As this is being sho)n to the user- a message saying 8ait is also displayed to the user. 0ote that the current scale ,actor is used ,or the animation. 7ne could change the scale ,actor and click the A0IMAT button. In such a case- the animation )ill be done )ith the ne) scale ,actor. A..;R M73 This allo)s ,or changing the geometry o, the moving element as )ell as the electrode. Click the A..;R M73 button. Then click on the small dots at the middle o, the elements you )ish to add or remove. Click the !T7P sign )hen you are done.

OUTPUT panel The output values are sho)n )hen one hits the A0A%1! button. The maximum displacement any)here in the moving element is displayed. The maximum stress any)here in the beam is also displayed.
