Research
M.A. Thesis Living Into the Whole Picture: Steinbecks Man and Optimism in The Grapes of Wrath. (June 2011) Chair: Sahng Young Moon Committee: Seok Won Yang, Hyungji Park
The grounding argument of my thesis is that the universal man illustrated by means of the specific people in The Grapes of Wrath is most of all an animal with biological needs shared by all living organisms on the planet. At the same time, man possess the potential ability to perceive the whole picture, the universe in which all living beings are interrelated with each other. Between these apparently inconsistent poles, man as an animal and man as a privileged species, I endeavor to acknowledge both of them as equally important part of Steinbecks view of man, contending that The Grapes of Wrath is neither a demeaning illustration of man nor a proclamation of the eventual victory of the noble migrants. It is true that the characters of the novel learn from their experience and mature into someone wise than their old selves. The optimism provided by the novelist, however, does not go as far as to ensure that the downtrodden will eventually and inevitably be victorious. The Grapes of Wrath is instead a story about the possibility of understanding of the whole picture and communication of that understanding with other human beings.
Teaching Experience
2012 Present Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, Graduate Teaching Assistant Instructor ENGL 106 Introductory Composition (Digital Rhetorics) In this course, students learn how to both analyze and compose texts in various forms. While covering the basics of composition and rhetorical analysis, the Digital Rhetorics also emphasize the importance of web as a new rhetorical situation and space for discussion, and the forms of texts born out of the recent technologies. Aside from the text-centric forms of composition, my students are expected to engage with visual texts as well, including rhetorical analysis of advertisements and narrative composition with photographs. Also, instead of the conventional research paper, my students are asked to create a web-based archive on a controversial issue, in which they introduce different parties and perspectives surrounding a controversial social issue. They are encouraged to take advantage of the new possibilities the medium of website provides, and to think about the significance of the fact that their work, once finished, becomes available to the public. 2010 2011 Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, Tutor One-to-one English writing tutoring for undergraduate students at CETS (College English Tutoring Service) 2007 2010 Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, Graduate Teaching Assistant Assignment evaluation and tutoring for undergraduate English courses 2007 Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Course preparation and lecture assistance
