Who is being left out? - i.e.: if none of the above are represented then it can be said that class resources do not have a lens towards equity and diversity Is there gender bias? - are men and women portrayed in a nonstereotypical manner? - are the experiences of gender nonconfirming/creative and transgender individuals shown? Are the experiences of other cultures celebrated and not only portrayed as victims or conquered peoples? Are a variety of cultures/ named in books and other resources? (ie:do resources go beyond Euro-Centrism Can all students see themselves reflected in the curriculum, resources, halls and walls of the school? Does the resource contain gendered pronouns such as he and she or is man/mankind? Are non-gendered pronouns such as they ever utilized? Are the art/graphics/illustrations utilized representative of global art forms? Is the language used non-discriminatory and used in a culturally appropriate manner? Do resources challenge prejudice and stereotyping? Are diverse family configurations portrayed? Do resources offer challenges to violence by promoting restorative and non-violent means of solving confrontation?
Do resources offer and value multi-generational points of view? Are preferred words utilized ie: wheelchair user versus wheelchair bound? Is their a diversity of resources for all students in the classroom to access i.e.: braille, audio books, text to speech capabilities for Internet resources When assigning web based assignments - have sites been examined using the above criteria and has the teacher attempted to vet potential hateful/hurtful information by providing a search list or teaching students about hate speech?**for example, a student may be assigned to research Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - a quick search in a search engine may very easily bring them to martinlutherking.org a hate site run by White Supremacists. Do teachers provided opportunities for students to identify and challenge stereotypes and biases in resources?
