Solutions
Today, as electricity demand grows, generation sources
become more diverse, bulk energy trading increases
and networks are increasingly interconnected, power
system operations are becoming increasingly volatile.
Commercial pressures to leverage transmission and
generation assets whilst maintaining system security
further compound the challenges faced by todays
power system professionals.
In such a challenging environment, there is a growing
need for fast, accurate and reliable measurement
based tools for power system operations and planning.
The availability of synchronised phasor measurement
devices, such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs),
coupled with appropriate PhasorPoint data
management and applications provide powerful
solutions for the real-time monitoring of power system
performance, including dynamics.
Psymetrixs solutions are used by power system
operators and planners worldwide for:
Improving power system security,

PhasorPoint Core
Two key elements of the PhasorPoint core solutions set
are described below.
Phasor Data Concentrators
A Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC) receives multiple
PMU data streams, performs stream data rate
conversion where required, time aligns the stream and
repacks the streams into one or more output streams
for transmission to other systems requiring phasor data.
Psymetrix provides a range of software PDC solutions,
including:
Central PDC integrated with PhasorPoint server
Regional PDC for standalone operation
Substation PDC for substation computing
platforms
These PDC offerings provide essentially the same
functionality, but may differ in their capability to support
large volumes of data throughput. The first diagram
shown on the previous page shows an example of a
PDC hierarchy in a large phasor-based WAMS
deployment.
This hierarchy illustrates the advantage of the PDC
capability, allowing multiple levels of data aggregation
and forwarding. This has benefits in managing
communications bandwidth usage and maintaining
appropriate communications network security.
Key features available with PhasorPoint PDCs include:
C37.118 streams in
C37.118 streams out
Phasor stream time alignment
Up/down sampling
User configurable output stream content selection
Web based configuration
Local storage option for Substation and Regional
PDCs
Data Storage Management
The storage facilities offered by PhasorPoint include the
following features:
Real time phasor data rolling buffer
Applications data rolling buffer
Long-term phasor data archive
Long-term applications data archive
Triggered storage
Automatic Substation PDC data recovery following
connection loss

PhasorPoint Workbench Overview
The PhasorPoint Workbench provides robust remote
access to all of the visualisation and analysis
applications available. The Workbench can be tailored
to provide different views to different classes of user.
Each of the individual applications that together
comprise the complete workbench share a common
interface and design methodology.
Many of the system and application tabs provide a map
view of the WAMS. Maps provide an intuitive way of
quickly viewing relationships between components in
both localised regions of the WAMS and for the entire
system as a whole.
All maps, including the overview map, are composed of
two levels. A System Level view and a Measurement
Level view. The system level view shows an overview
of the entire WAMS.
The hexagonal icon represents an Aggregate
Measurement Group (AMG). Measurement Groups
contain one or more measurement sites. For example,
a measurement group may represent a particular group
of PMUs that measure related signals. Measurement
groups provide a method of grouping particular
measurements from one or more PMUs.
Double clicking on a measurement group icon switches
the map to the measurement level view for that group.
Each measurement group can have its own background
image and map properties configured. This allows the
icons within a single measurement group to be placed
appropriately against geographic or schematic
backgrounds.
Voltage and Phase Angle Monitoring
The PhasorPoint Voltage and Phase Angle application
deliver real-time voltage angle monitoring with alarms
and on-line and off-line visualisation.
The PhasorPoint workbench provides a graphical
representation of voltage magnitudes and phase angles
throughout the system. A map view is provided so that
an appropriate image can be configured to act as a
backdrop to the positioned measurement icons.
Visualisation at the System Level provides a complete
overview of voltage magnitudes and phases throughout
the WAMS. Drill-down is provided to the Measurement
Level view.
Maps at the measurement level provide views of
individual voltage measurements together with any
defined angle differences. Live strip charts displaying
the voltage magnitude and angle for any selected
phasor are displayed below the map.

Model validation
Islanding, Resynchronisation and Blackstart
Voltage phasor measurements, together with frequency
measurements, can provide an immediate indication of
the separation of a system into two or more electrical
islands. They can also provide valuable information for
operators to prepare the system for resynchronisation
and supervise the process of synchronising the system
and subsequent network strengthening.
It can be very useful for operators to have a supervisory
indication of the frequency and angle so that islands
can be balanced before a resynchronisation is
attempted.
This view of the system is also useful in the blackstart
process. A blackstart plan normally involves energising
the system from a few generators at strategic positions
in the grid, then re-energising the network in islands
around these generators and finally reconnecting the
islands. The network can be quite insecure during this
process, and a view of the stability of frequency and
angle in real-time is very useful.
The Islanding, Resynchronisation and Blackstart
(IRB) Advanced Application provides a real-time tool for
identifying islanding and providing information valuable
in performing a successful resynchronisation. It
provides a real-time view of both angle and frequency
across a network topology map. It also provides visual
indication of when and where islanding has occurred
with a visualisation of frequency deviation between
areas.
Asynchronous Systems
A power system that includes two or more separate
synchronous areas interconnected by High Voltage
Direct Current (HVDC) couplings requires independent
treatment of each synchronous zone.
For example, if all phasors were referred to a single
angle reference, then during normal operation, one
synchronous area will show almost static phasors while
in the other synchronous areas the phasors will rotate
continuously.
This phasor rotation would hide potentially significant
information. The PhasorPoint Asynchronous Systems
advanced application (ASC) provides the tools and
mechanisms for grouping PMUs according to which
synchronous area they are measuring and defining
separate angle references for each area.
The ASC advanced application also fully integrates with
the Oscillatory Stability Management (OSM) and
Islanding Resynchronisation and Blackstart (IRB)
advanced applications. For example, where the WAMS
system is observing multiple asynchronous areas, the
ASC advanced application ensures the extraction and
monitoring of dynamics take account of the fact that
there are independent patterns of oscillation in each
area. In the IRB advanced application, each
synchronous area is independently monitored and
visualised.

EMS Integration
Psymetrix is working with leading Energy Management
System (EMS) vendors to provide PhasorPoint EMS
integration. This enables key PhasorPoint information
to be made available to system operators through their
EMS Situational Awareness dashboards and other
screens.
This integration also allows SCADA and PMU derived
data to be combined within PhasorPoint to provide
additional dynamics insights thus improving the
information available to system operators and planners.
WAMS Design and Deployment
Psymetrix has significant experience in the design and
deployment of WAMS (Wide-Area Monitoring Systems)
using PMUs from a number of different vendors.
Services provided include the design of WAMS ranging
from small-pilot schemes right up to large-scale
deployments that are flexible, scalable and reliable.
Our approach ensures that the WAMS design is
suitable for the available or planned communications
infrastructure, and that the appropriate phasor data
concentrator architecture, applications and integration
required is delivered.
Furthermore, where synchrophasor measurements are
already available as part of existing protection relay,
IED or PMU deployments, Psymetrix will happily advise
customers on how to get the most out of their existing
measurement investment whilst at the same time
leveraging the benefits of Psymetrixs PhasorPoint data
management facilities and advanced applications.
