Release 9.4 Installation and Maintenance Update Course Module 2: Enhancements

Whats New in Release 9.4?

Installation and Upgrades CD/USB upgrade boot screen now indicates when the installation is 64-bit. (The System Information screen now shows this information too.) Upgrade process prevents upgrade to wrong architecture (i.e. 32-bit to 64-bit, or vice versa). Accidental downgrade to an older MSL version is prevented. New Cache link in the Blades panel allows separate blade download and installation. NTFS file system support for USB devices to allow file sizes greater than 4 GB. Security Existing web certificates can now be imported and installed on the MSL server. You can also export signed certificates from MSL. The default self-signed certificate now automatically allows for alternate names, which may be required when the MBG Web Proxy application fronts MAS or UCA servers. Server Console When using the Access server manager option in the server console, it is no longer necessary to log in separately. Your initial login now provides the required credentials. When a Restore from Backup operation fails, all IP address parameters that you entered are now fully maintained for your next attempt.

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Whats New in Release 9.4? (contd)

Server Manager Now prompts for confirmation before executing shutdown, reboot, reconfigure options. Clustering Updates (for NuPoint Unified Messaging) You can now remove cluster IP addresses by clearing the address that was originally assigned to the cluster (i.e. it is no longer necessary to input 0.0.0.0). Password changes made in the server manager are now replicated across cluster nodes. Virtualization Updates If the MAC address of the NIC in a single-NIC system changes (for example, if you create a new virtual machine (VM) and then restore a backup from a previous VM), MSL 9.4 recognizes and stores the changed address. (In previous releases, you may have had to step through the "Configure this Server" option to make MSL recognize the updated NIC.) Note: This feature may not be effective for physical/virtual hardware with multiple NICs (i.e. multiple new MAC addresses). If networking does not respond properly, you may still have to step through the "Configure this Server" option to reset the addresses. OVA files for all Mitel Virtual appliances now include the Mitel Virtual Framework (MVF) blade. This software blade manages optional VMware features like Site Recovery Manager and High Availability. See your application documentation for instructions on how and when to update this blade.

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Whats New in Release 9.4? (contd)

Network Backup and Restore Network Backup and Restore now provides configuration for storage in sub-directories (previously only allowed at the root directory of the specified share). Troubleshooting View Log Files option now allows entry of regular expressions (regex) in the Filter and Highlight fields. Log download performance has been optimized for faster viewing of large logs. General Enhancements MSL 9.4 is based on CentOS 5.7 and is available in both i686 (32-bit kernel, 32-bit user space) and x86-64 (64 bit kernel, 32-bit user space) versions. ServiceLink upgrades (from the Blades panel) are available for both versions effective with the following releases: 32-bit: Rel 9.1.24.0 and later 64-bit: Rel 9.2.21.0 and later Offline Sync (sync.bat file) has been enhanced to execute from directories that contain spaces in their path name.

The following screens provide more detail about the new functionality.
Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Installation and Upgrades

Local Media Upgrade screens and System Information screen now indicate 32-bit or 64-bit installation:

Accidental downgrades are prevented:

If you are sure you want to install the wrong version, click Erase ALL disks and perform fresh install. If you have made a mistake, remove any storage media and select Reboot system to return to the original MSL version.
Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Installation and Upgrades (contd)

New Cache Link in the Blades Panel MSL now provides a Cache link so you can download software and then install it at a later time. If you do not have a previous version of the software you are caching (i.e. youre not upgrading), then the software packages remain in the cache for 21 days only.

Software packages for upgrade versions remain in the cache until deleted. (MSL automatically deletes older versions that have been installed.)

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Installation and Upgrades (contd)

Support for NTFS file systems on USB devices NTFS is a Windows file system that supports much larger files than the older FAT32 system. MSL now supports NTFS on USB devices so more complex software (like the Mitel Application Suite) can be installed/upgraded using USB storage devices.

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Security
Importing Existing Web Certificates Some sites will already have a signed web certificate when they install MSL. MSL 9.4 provides an interface for importing (and exporting) an existing certificate.

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Network Backup and Restore

When you are performing a Network backup and restore, you can now select a subdirectory in which to store the backup file:

In the example shown here, the backup file is stored in the september2011 subdirectory of the backups share. (Note: You can also make a compound entry to indicate a folder within the subdirectory, for example, september2011/sales.)

Clustering Updates

In MSL 9.4, you can remove a Cluster IP address by clearing the address and clicking Save.

When you change the admin password in the server manager, that change is now automatically copied to all nodes in the cluster.

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

13

Troubleshooting Updates
View Log Files Updates You can now enter regular expressions in the pattern fields of the View Log Files page.

A regular expression (also regex, regexp, or regxp) is a string of characters or words that specifies a pattern. You can use them when you want to search for specific lines of text containing that particular pattern. Regular expressions have their own syntax. For example: /a/ Looks for an exact match of the character string a". /.a/ The . character matches any character (wildcard). Example: 123a or B2750a would match.
14

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

Troubleshooting Updates (contd)

Examples of Regular Expressions in the View Logs File /REGISTER request/ will find any attempts to register a SIP device /INVITE request/ will find all SIP call attempts

You can also narrow the results by specifying a direction: Received: or Sent: /TX >>> INVITE request/ /RX <<< INVITE request/

You can also include the address of a SIP device. /REGISTER request.*=24.100.1.2/

Reference: The dot-asterisk combination in the above request allows for a variable number of characters between request and = , which is required to match the possible patterns in the log file. For more information, type Regular Expressions in your favorite search engine.

Mitel Standard Linux I&M Update - Module 2: Enhancements

15

Virtualization Updates
NIC Address Updates MSL stores the MAC address of the Network Interface Card. When you change the address of the NIC (by restoring a backup from another server, or by an actual change of NIC hardware), MSL now detects the change and automatically updates the NIC address stored in its internal database. Note: This update is automatic and guaranteed for single-NIC systems. For systems with multiple NICs, MSL will attempt to detect and assign the new addresses but there is no guarantee that the assignment will be correct. If your network does not come up correctly, access the server console option to Configure this Server and manually configure the available NICs with the correct IP addresses.

Troubleshooting Note

TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE:

If you have previously used the CD upgrade method to upgrade your server from Release 9.0 to Release 9.1, you may experience difficulty when using the ServiceLink upgrade to Release 9.3 due to accumulated driver modules. To avoid a hang condition during the upgrade, do the following: 1. 2. Log in to the MSL server as root. At the Linux prompt, type this command: rpm qa | grep kmod-gfs. MSL displays all driver module versions. If there are multiple versions, you must delete the older ones. Example output: kmod-gfs-PAE-0.1.34-2.el5 kmod-gfs-PAE-0.1.31-3.el5 Remove the older version (last in the list) using the rpm e command and the module name to remove. For example: rpm -e kmod-gfs-PAE-0.1.31-3.el5 4. If there are multiple modules, use the rpm e command to remove them all EXCEPT the most recent (the first module listed). Proceed with the ServiceLink upgrade.

The AMC and Virtual Appliances

As with physical servers, when a virtual appliance is powered up, you are prompted to enter your Application Record ID (ARID). When the AMC receives the virtual appliance ARID, it responds with a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) for the appliance. The GUID is stored in the database of the virtual appliance and used when performing regular synchronization with the AMC. If a virtual appliance is upgraded by deploying a new OVF image, MSL backup and restore procedures are required to maintain the GUID and ensure continued synchronization with the AMC. The GUID is the equivalent of the Hardware ID in the physical environment, except that, under normal circumstances, it does not need to be reset.

Backing Up Virtual Appliances

You can use the same backup methods for virtual appliances that you currently use for physical servers. The MSL backup is required if you are deploying a new OVF, or migrating from a physical deployment to a virtual. Most application-specific backups are also supported. (Note: Some applications (like vNuPoint) require both MSL backup and NuPoint backup before deploying a new OVF.) VMware also supplies optional backup tools including: vStorage API for Data Protection (vADP): APIs that third-party backup utilities can use to backup/restore from a central backup server VMware Data Recovery: a vCenter plug-in that enables disk-based backup and restore

Note: VMware snapshots are not supported as a backup method

All virtual appliances can also be backed up by exporting an OVF template of the virtual appliance. The template is a copy of the virtual appliance in .ova format. To restore the virtual appliance, you deploy the exported OVF file to the vSphere platform and reconfigure MSL with the new VMware NIC addresses.

Caution: Check the training material and/or documentation for your application to see which methods are supported/recommended.

7. MSL automatically configures the NIC address for the new virtual machine.

Note: For virtual machines with multiple NICs, automatic NIC addressing is not guaranteed. If your virtual machine has multiple NICs and does not function correctly after the OVF export, we suggest that you select the server console option to Configure this Server and manually configure the NIC addresses.

Upgrading Virtual Appliance Software

When a new version of the software and/or MSL is available, several upgrade methods are available. For upgrades within the same release, you can use the following MSL server console or server manager upgrade methods: For MAS: use the Upgrade Mitel Applications Suite option in the server console. (Note: Some applications (like NuPoint UM) require additional software installed from DVD.) For most other applications: Use the Blades panel in the server manager. When you are upgrading to a new major release, Deploy a new virtual appliance with the new .ova file and then restore backup data (recommended) OR Manually update the current virtual appliance For either of the major release methods, you must: Apply the appropriate upgrade license Ensure that your virtual machine has the required resources for the new release.

Caution: Check your application documentation to see if any restrictions or conditions exist and which method is recommended.

Upgrading Virtual Appliance Software (contd)

This task list presents the general steps required to upgrade your virtual machine. For detailed instructions, refer to the Installation and Maintenance Guide for your application. To deploy a new virtual appliance using new .ova file: This method ensures the latest virtual appliance configuration updates and VMware Tools version. 1. Ensure that the upgrade license has been applied to the Application Record for this deployment.

2. Download the new .ova file and any optional software files from Mitel OnLine and store on a network drive or on the vSphere Client PC. 3. Perform an MSL backup of the current configuration and application data to a network drive or on the vSphere client PC. (Note: For some applications (like vNuPoint), you must also perform a NuPoint system backup.) 4. Deploy the new .ova file (see Deploying the Virtual Appliance earlier in this module). 5. In the MSL console, when prompted to Restore from Backup?, select Yes and then select Restore from Network Server. 6. When the restore is complete, select Reboot. 7. For multi-NIC systems, test network and, if required, update the MSL configuration with the NIC addresses for the new virtual appliance. 8. Install any optional software (like NuPoint UM language prompts).
Caution: Unless steps are taken to preserve them, log and core files from the original virtual appliance will not be present in the upgraded appliance.

Upgrading Virtual Appliance Software (contd)

This task list presents the general steps required to upgrade your virtual machine. For detailed instructions, refer to the Installation and Maintenance Guide for your application.

To manually update the current virtual appliance: Most applications also provide a manual upgrade method. Instructions differ for each application but generally, the process consists of the following steps: 1. Back up configuration and application data for the current release using backup or OVF export. 2. Download and manually install new MSL software on the current virtual appliance (may require BIOS changes to boot from CD). 3. Install new application software (either from the Blades panel or using an MSL server console option.)

Converting from Physical to Virtual

Caution: Ensure that conversion is supported for your deployment configuration BEFORE you begin! Conversion requires a service outage and should be scheduled for off hours.

This task list presents the general steps required to upgrade your virtual machine. For detailed instructions, refer to the Installation and Maintenance Guide for your application. To convert from physical to virtual: 1. Purchase the required Server to Virtual licensing and apply it to the Application Record. Make a note of your Application Record ID. Ensure that the server syncs with the AMC. 2. Back up the physical server using the method recommended in the application documentation. 3. Download the latest .ova file from Mitel OnLine. 4. Deploy the virtual appliance but do not power it up. 5. Shut down the physical server, launch the vSphere Client, and power up the virtual appliance. 6. Open the virtual appliance console and configure MSL. (When prompted to Restore from Backup?, refer to your application documentation for instructions.) 7. After MSL syncs with the AMC using the Server to Virtual licensing, the AMC supplies a GUID that identifies the virtual machine. 8. When MSL is configured and has rebooted, we recommend that you perform an MSL backup to maintain the GUID as well as the configuration settings. (You will use this backup when you upgrade software on the virtual machine.)
