Odd & Even Functions

Even functions
A function f(x) is said to be even if
f(-x) = f(x) or symmetrical about the
y-axis.

Eg1
f(x) = x
2

f(-x) = (-x)
2
= x
2
= f(x)
f(x) = x
2
is an even function

Eg2
f(x) = cos x
f(-x) = cos (-x) = cos x = f(x)
f(x) = cos x is an even function

Odd Functions
A function f(x) is said to be odd if
f(-x) = -f(x) or symmetrical about the
origin.

Eg1
f(x) = x
3

f(-x) = (-x)
3
= -x
3
= -f(x)
f(x) = x
3
is an odd function
2
Eg2
f(x) = sin x
f(-x) = sin (-x) = -sin x = -f(x)
f(x) = sin x is an odd function

Products of odd and even functions
(even) x (even) = (even) like (+) x (+) = (+)
(odd) x (odd) = (even) (-) x (-) = (+)
(odd) x (even) = (odd) (-) x (+) = (-)
