Reflection On A Lesson

This lesson taught students about the components of the solar system, focusing on the moon. It used videos, a student demonstration, and a worksheet to explain how the moon orbits Earth and the phases of the moon. Students engaged with the material through whole-group instruction, individual work, and showed interest in learning more outside of class. The teacher assessed understanding through observation and a worksheet.

Objective: Students will be able to explain the components that make up the solar system.

Students will understand rotation, revolution, and phases of the moon. Procedure: 1. What do the students know about the moon KWL 2. brainpop video on the moon 3. storybot song on the moon 4. Explain the same side of the moon faces the Earth 5. Number of days it takes the moon to orbit the earth 6. Student model of how earth, moon, sun rotate. 7. Comprehension text about the moon with questions Materials: Brainpop Jr video, storybot video, worksheet on the moon with questions Assessment: observation, informal, worksheet Grouping: whole group, individual

This lesson was an introductory lesson on the Moon. The lesson involved a variety of resources to further student understanding of the material. Technology was the center of whole group instruction using a Storybot video that the students love. Every day during the unit on the solar system, students requested to see a Storybot video even if it was a repeat. After the videos, a short lecture followed that encouraged higher level thinking questions. Students were involved and encouraged to share ideas. I used 3 students, each representing the Sun, Moon, and Earth in order to show students how they rotated in space. This live model helped clear up any confusion students had in terms of how everything moved. They were struggling picturing how the Moon moved around the Sun, while the Earth moved around the Sun at the same time. The lesson was very effective in teaching students about the Moon. The lesson was also very engaging. Classroom management was not an issue during the solar system unit. Students were excited to learn science each day. Students showed me books they read, or checked out, during our unit to share more information they learned on their own. It was wonderful to see my students wanting to learn more outside of the classroom. Students also began writing nonfiction pieces on the solar system in their spare time because they were so intrigued with the material. Assessment for this lesson was observation and the worksheet on the Moon. I assessed students throughout the lesson to see if connections were being made with the material. The worksheet at the end of the lesson gave students additional practice highlighting key information on the Moon while answering comprehensive questions. The lesson was also standard based including: E.5.B.2 Students know the solar system includes the Sun, planets, and moons. E/S E.5.B Students understand that there are many components in the solar system including Earth
