CIS 291 ASSIGNMENT 1 Jing Long Cao 300077063

Case Project 1-1: Choosing a New Operating System

Cutting Edge is a company with 122 employees who make cutting boards and a full line of knives and knife sets for home and commercial kitchens. The company is divided into several departments, including Development, Marketing, Business, Manufacturing, Information Systems (IS), and Inventory and Shipping. There is also a management team consisting of the company president, vice president, chief financial officer, and the managers of each department. The company is housed in one building that is fully networked. All employees have access to a desktop or laptop computer. These computers are a mixture of Windows 2000, Windows XP, and seven Windows Vista machines. At this point, there is a Windows 2000 Server in each department, and the company is planning to gradually upgrade each server to Windows Server 2008. The IS Department is the smallest department, consisting of four very overworked employees. Considering the IS workload, the IS manager hires you to help assess the server needs of the company and make recommendations for the future. 1. The Marketing Department uses large name and address databases for catalog and other promotions. Some of the databases are ones they own and others are purchased from other catalog sales companies and from Internet companies. The databases are currently on a standard Windows 2000 Server computer, which is overloaded. When they perform sorts and queries of addresses, the computer operates extremely slowly. Which Windows Server 2008 system do you recommend for them? Provide a justification for your recommendation. Answer: I would recommend Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition for the following reason: Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition is designed for environments with mission-critical applications, very large databases, and information access requiring high availability Support hot-add memory for increased server availability Support hot-add processor and hot-replace processor The RAM capabilities are 64 GB for x86 processor and 2 TB for x64 processor 2. The Marketing Department wants to establish an Internet business to supplement Cutting Edges catalog and outlet businesses. Which Windows Server 2008 system would work for the Internet portion of the business? Be sure to justify your recommendation.

Answer: I would recommend Windows Web Server 2008 for the following reason: Windows Web Server 2008 is designed for hosting and deploying Web services and applications Support hot-add memory for increased server availability Support hot-add processor and hot-replace processor The RAM capabilities are 64 GB for x86 processor and 2 TB for x64 processor 3. The Business Department has a Windows 2000 Server system and is concerned about security and reliability. Which Windows Server 2008 edition do you recommend they upgrade to and note some features that would be important for the Business Department? Answer: I would recommend Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition for the following reason: The new version is built on preview Windows Server system, but includes many new features. Also, the program coding of old features is enhanced for security and efficiency. Windows Server 2008 can be used on x86 and x64 computers Compatible with the common language runtime used in Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, and Enables computer programmers to develop and use program code in several programming languages. New version of Hyper-V included with Standard Edition Can run 32-bit and 64-bit OS at the same time Can run SMP computers Can access larger memory segments Reliable in terms of the operating system running in privileged mode.

Case Project 3-4: Understanding the Registry

The Light Crafters IT staff has never worked with the Registry. Create a brief report or slide presentation for them to explain its contents. Also, they need to know how to access the tool used to edit the Registry. Answer: The Registry is hierarchical in structure and is made up of keys, subkeys, and entries. KeyA folder that appears in the left pane of the Registry Editor and can contain subkeys and entries, for example, HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Subkeya part of the Registry that is below a key. A Subkey can contain entries or other subkeys. Entry or valuean item that appears in the details pane and is the lowest level in the Registry. An entry consists of an entry name, its data type, and its value.

The Windows Server 2008 Registry is made up of five root keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: contains information on every hardware component in the server HEKY_CURRENT_USER: contains information about the desktop setup for the account presently logged on to the server console. HKEY_USERS: contains profile information for each user who has logged onto the computer. HEKY_CLASSES_ROOT: holds data to associate file extensions with programs. HEKY_CURRENT_CONFIG: has information about the current hardware profile. Using the Registry Editor: Click Start, click Run, and type regedit in the open text box. Click OK.

Case Project 3-5: Creating a Security Policy

You want to make certain that Light Crafters creates a security policy on each server before it is brought into production. What tool can you use for this task, and what security elements does it configure? What step should you take after using the tool before a server is made available to users? Create a brief report of this information for the IT staff. Answer: The tool we use is called the Security Configuration Wizard steps which allow us to analyzing and configuring security settings on a server. Its features include: Disable unnecessary services and software Close network communication ports and other communication resources that arent in use Examine shared files and folders to help manage network access through access protocols Configure firewall rules. By using the SCW Wizard, I can: Create a new security policy Edit an existing security policy Apply an existing security policy Roll back the last applied security policy

After the new security policy is applied, it is important that the company carefully test each server to ensure there is no interference with programs. If there are problems, it may be necessary to modify or even roll back the newly applied security policies and try again.
