EARTH HOUR

As all of us know that earth hour is celebrated worldwide in the end of the month of March annually, encouraging individuals, communities households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour ( Between 8:30 pm to 9:30pm)as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. And when I came to know about it for the first time I too decided to switch off everything at my home. I contemplated how to make this acceptable to my young sons. I thought to make this hour a very interesting one. In the morning I told them that they have to join for dinner at 8:30 pm. They asked who else all are invited. I told it is a surprise. My boys were on time, well dressed and excited. I arranged a beautiful candle light dinner. And incidentally it happened that only three of us were there on the table. Anyway I told them about the earth hour and they accepted it whole heartedly the arrangement. The atmosphere was so calm that we could talk at length on various topics. And it took turn to confessions. It struck to my mindhow easy it would be to make confessions in a dimmer light where you can avoid an eye contact comfortably. I told my sons, You might have lied to me many times. Come on lets make the confessions and I promise I wont scold you for that. Although with a little starting problem they started. My elder son told, Ma do you remember two years back I had a fracture on my leg? Oh ya, you fell off jumping over the nallah, right? I said. Actually Ma I told a lie then. I and my friend were racing with our cycles and I skidded. I didnt tell you because you always warned me against fast cycling. The hour passed and we put on the lights and were back to our routine jobs. But the words of my son were echoing in my ears YOU WARNED ME AGAINST. I wondered how difficult parenthood is. We set a discipline and rules for our children and when they fail to follow them we reprimand them. And to save themselves with the wrath they tell the lies.

And all these days we thought we were very good parents! We have a very good understanding with our children. Then why did this situation arise? I had to resolve this. I carried the dessert bowls to my childrens room. The room was well lit with bright lights. Handing over the bowls I started the conversation with them again, this time with an eye contact. We all make mistakes or sometimes they happen unknowingly and at times we land ourselves in a bad situation. And to save ourselves from others fury we tell lies. So next time if you are in such situation you can come to me and tell the truth. I dont know about the rest of the world but I am sure for one thing. I am there standing strong for my children as a support. For no one else cares for children more than parents. And I kept my word. And my boys never needed an earth hour to make confessions. Be it breaking a glass of school window or a wrong parking I was the first person to know. I would steer them clear through the situation at the same time make them learn to be more careful.
