Configuring Active Directory in Windows Server 2012


Release: Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition Problem: This document will give an insight to configure Active Directory in Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition Operating System. Solution: Prerequisites: 1. System installed with Windows Server 2008 Core Standard Edition. 2. Static IP should be assigned in any one of the LAN interface. Note: In windows server 2012 DCPROMO.EXE is no longer used. We need to manually install the role from server manager. Here for configuring the Active Directory first we need to install the Active Directory Domain Services role. For installing that service open the Server manager => Add/Remove Roles, and then click next.

Here we need to select the installation type. Here there are two types of installation, which is Role Based Installation Remote Desktop Service Installation

We proceeding with the Role-Based Installation option. After clicking next then it will list the pool of servers for installation.

Here select the server in which the role to be installed and then click next.

Now the list of roles will be displayed as shown below, in that we need to select the Active Directory Domain Services. While selecting that role a window automatically opens and prompts for adding the features. Here without adding those features we couldnt able to continue.

Hence click the Add Features and at the next screen you will be prompted to add more features for installation.

Here select the necessary features and click next twice. Now you will be prompted Install option for installing the role. Also it will display the list of roles and features selection. After confirming click on the Install option for installing the role and features.

After the successful installation close the window and open the server manager.

In the server manager notification area, we will be prompted for promoting the server as a Domain Controller.

Click the option which is on the Notification Area Promote this server to a domain controller After clicking you will be prompted to select the deployment operation. Here we have selected Add a new forest

After clicking new forest, you will be prompted to enter the FQDN name for the forest. Fill the name and click next. It will examine the forest name and then we need to select the Forest Functional Level, Domain Functional Level. Here by default the Windows Server 2012 and also the DNS server option will be selected. Here we proceeding with the same Also here we need to provide the DSRM (Directory Service Restore Mode) Password. After entering the password click next.

Then you will get the below warning, which can be ignored and click next.

Now in the next screen we will be prompted to enter the NetBIOS name. By default it will take the FQDN name.

At the next screen we will be prompted to mention the path for the Database, log files and SYSVOL. By default it will select the below mentioned path, Proceed with next. In the next screen it will show the summary of the selections which we made in before sections.

Then at the next screen it will perform the Pre-requisites check. Once the validation successfully completed we will be prompted to click Install. Click Install for completing the installation. Once the installation completed the server will get rebooted automatically. Now the server is configured as a Domain Controller.
