1) OVERVIEW Welcome to the CAP Cadet Military Ball 2010 handbook. This handbook is designed as a general guide as to any questions that might arise. This event is hosted by a planning committee that consists of the Texas Wing Cadet Advisory Council Officers and a few select officers from TXWG Groups II and III. The intentions for this event are to provide a social event where the military aspect is kept and social accommodations are accomplished. This event is open to ANYONE in Texas wing. During this event, we will additionally commemorate the tragic event that happened on 9/11/2001. Military Balls are a tradition that has been carried down by all branches of the military for decades. At this event, we will preserve these traditions and celebrate all those who serve their community and nations. All of this information is listed on the event website: click here. 2) LOCATION
Grand Hotel and Ballroom 114 W. Louisiana Street McKinney, Texas 75069
3) EVENT ATTIRE This activity is a formal event, much like any other prom or evening function. The following is the attire for the Military Ball: FEMALES (All): The appropriate attire is the same for both CAP members and outside guests. The attire for females consists of a prom dress or formal/evening gown. View the dress code section for more information. MALES: Male Cadets Male cadets should wear their uniform if they have the proper attire. For male cadets, the uniform is semi-formal or service dress. For the old-style, the semi-
formal attire is the service dress, minus the nameplate, and with a white tux/dress shirt. New style should remove nameplate. All decorations should be worn. For cadets without jackets, please wear civilian attire. Please DO NOT wear class B uniforms. Male Senior Members Senior members attending should wear Mess Dress or their best blues uniform. If the SM does not meet height/weight requirements, they, like cadets, should wear the civilian attire. Male Civilian Guests Male civilian guests should wear what they would wear to prom or any other evening dance function. This is a tie and jacket event and though tuxedoes are encouraged, a simple coat and tie will work at guests discretion. 4) DRESS CODE The dress code is here to simply act as a reminder of good taste. Though the rules will be loose, we ask that each attendee use good choices in their attire. We want everyone to have a safe and fun time at Military Ball. Here are the basic guidelines: Females:
1) Dresses may not be cut below the bust line. The bust continues around your sides directly under the armpit. With arms down at your side, if flesh touches flesh below the bust line, the dress is inappropriate.
2) Dresses may be backless as long as conservative taste is used. 3) Dresses should be no more than two inches above the kneecap. 4) Pinning should not be necessary at the Military Ball. Please make all adjustments at home before you arrive. 5) All pictures taken by photographers at the event should be meeting this dress code. 6) Have fun and be creative! Sticking with these simple guidelines allows for much expression in a positive way! Males: Formal Military Ball attire may be classified as an uniform, tuxedo or dress suit, including a tie, bow tie, a turtle neck, a shirt, which may include a vest or cummerbund and other uniform accessories. Shirts are to be worn at ALL times and jackets are required for all except the dance, which is optional. Dress shoes must be worn while in any public building. Tennis shoes and athletic shoes are unacceptable. Please use discretion when choosing your attire. 5) BALL ETIQUETTE The Military Ball is a tradition that has been among the branches of the Armed Services for many years. As this Cadet Military Ball is provided for cadets in the Civil Air Patrol; United States Air Force Auxiliary, military tradition and pastime will be honored at this event. The planning staff does realize that many of the attendees will be guests and
have never been to an activity of this nature. Because of this, we are making the events very easy to catch on to and open to everyone. Below are a few items and tips that will happen at the Military Ball and proper etiquette that is included: Head Table Introduction There will be a head table that will include some of the TXWG Cadet Advisory Council, their dates, and other officers of the wing. At the beginning of the event, the head table will be filed in. During this time, the room will be called to attention. Uniformed members should stand at attention and guests should stand quietly. All will be seated when the head table has arrived. Escorting Many often wonder the proper way of escorting. Whenever a uniformed member and his date are walking, the male member should be leading the way. The proper way consists of the male on the right, and the female on the left. The male should allow his date to put her arm between his arm and his body. The male may curve his arm across his chest or leave it hanging. Posting of the colors There will be a CAP Honor Guard unit at this event. The colors consist of the traditional American flag along with a wing flag and two rifle guards. During this time, uniformed members should stand at attention and guests should place their hands over their hearts during the posting. POW/MIA Table This Prisoner of War/Missing in Action table stands alone and has a series of items on it that remind us if those who have went missing in our midst. A member of the head table will conduct a ceremony for this, but no action is required by the audience except for the words remember. Toasting Toasting is always a fun and memorable function at military balls. These toasts commemorate the actions and individuals who mean a lot to us. The head table will begin the toasting, but the floor will be opened up for members of the mess to follow. Grog Bowl The grog bowl, also known as the bowl of grace is a toilet bowl that is a mixture of food items to make a Not so pleasant looking mixture. Uniformed members will partake in this as a tradition. Groggees shall be aware of their potential of getting grogged before the event. This will be explained in detail at the event. Speakers There will one to two speakers who will deliver a short oration to the attendees. This will be someone from the Cadet Advisory Council, CAP as a whole, or the military. Dance The fun part which everyone knows about. After the food is finished, the official dance will take place. All are encouraged to dance, regardless of their knowhows. There will be a mixture of songs, but they will be clean and allow for members to remain professional. 6) BALL PRICING The CAP Cadet Military Ball 2010 has fees associated with it to make it a truly outstanding event. The pricing is as follows:
Couples - $80 *Best Pricing SAVE!* Male CAP Cadet $42 Female CAP Cadet $42 NON- CAP Member - $45 NON- CAP Member - $45 Senior Sponsor $42 We encourage ALL to come with a date, therefore reducing pricing and evening M/F ratios at the event. There is a limited number of tickets = 100 including outside dates. As soon as 100 have been sold, no more will be sold. 7) OUTSIDE DATES We highly encourage CAP cadets to come with outside dates outside meaning, out-ofCAP. Outside dates ARE subject to the dress attire/code, so please assist us in ensuring this takes place. 8) MENU A formal, four course meal will be catered by Ricks Chophouse, a very nice restaurant on the McKinney town square.
