The document discusses the use of hydrazine to remove dissolved oxygen from boiler water and prevent corrosion. It describes the measurement and calibration of hydrazine levels.

Hydrazine is used to efficiently eliminate residual oxygen from boiler water through a chemical reaction. This creates an alkaline environment that decreases corrosion in steam facilities.

Hydrazine is measured using an amperometric sensor that applies a voltage to platinum electrodes to produce a current proportional to the hydrazine concentration. The sensor works by consuming the hydrazine during measurement.

Hydrazine (N2H4 ) is thermally unstable and decomposes at temperatures above 95C to form ammonia (NH3), nitrogen (N2), and hydrogen (H2). It efficiently eliminates the residual oxygen by the following reaction:. N2H4 + O2 -> 2 H2O + N2 The further reaction of N2 with H2 results in an alkaline pH condition that decreases corrosion in the steam facility.

Hydrazine is a carcinogenic substance. There are severe saftey constraints for handling it. To control corrosion, residual hydrazine typically is maintained at three times the DO content (DO 5 ppb = Hydrazine 15 ppb). Levels up to 500 ppb may be used to guard against corrosion when the boiler is out of service for an extended period.

Apply a voltage to an electrode pair (platinum) and measure the resulting current. The applied voltage is at or slightly above the oxidation/reduction potential of the species to be detected. Produces a current (A).
Note that the species is consumed during the measurement process. Sensors need running-in time to achieve the necessary level of polarization.

Hydrazine Sensor
6

The hydrazine sensor is very similar to the Trides sensor with a few modifications:
Reversed polarity of applied voltage Bigger head tank to reduce sample consumption Addition of Reagent to increase sample conductivity

The reagent diisopropylamine is identical to the one used for sodium analyzers, but dosing is through a diffusion tubing.

Hydrazine: Calibration

ASTM D1385-01 Standard Test Method for Hydrazine in Water

This test method covers the colorimetric determination of hydrazine in boiler feed waters, condensates, natural, and well waters that have been treated with hydrazine This colorimetric test method is usable in the range from 5.0 to 200 g/L (ppb) hydrazine. Higher concentrations of hydrazine can also be determined by taking a more diluted sample. Swan does not offer a comparative measurement.

Zero calibration is NOT necessary.
