50% of what we see & hear, but we retain 90% of what we do! This is a big reason why the IADC Well Control Committee
recently mandated an increase in simulation for WellCAP certification. With the WCCAT, each student will experience hours of dedicated hands on training designed to achieve and maintain a defined standard, a preferable alternative to group simulator sessions with minimal individual hands on time.
Systematically engineered training such as this enables training managers to both define and measure proficiency, and make course adjustments based on the results.
What is it to be proficient in any given well control task? Do we agree with the standards? How are we performing against them? If we are falling short, is the training insufficient or is the standard unreasonable? This fundamental approach to training is critical in high reliability industries, where mistakes can have disastrous and unacceptable consequences. Personnel must be proficient, trained to take timely and appropriate steps to prevent damage to equipment and worse, loss of life.

regularly applied in a practical setting. Well Control by its very nature demands a higher frequency of training to maintain proficiency. Therefore, WCCAT students can train while on hitch in between WellCAP/IWCF courses to prevent the inevitable decline in proficiency illustrated in the graph. Each lesson is comprised of knowledge and skill training with emphasis on kick detection & shut-in and follow on secondary well control operations.
