8. OUTPUT RELAY CHECKS This is to verify the healthiness of the Control output relay healthiness. Operate each Spare output through Commissioning Test on front LCD, Check continuity of the contact that closes. Scroll to Commissioning Test , use to test mode. Change Test Mode to Contact Blocked. Under Test pattern identify the output to close. Apply Test using the Contact test option. Reset the output relays by setting cell [COMMISSIONING TESTS, Contact Test] to Remove Test.
Note: Only spare outputs shall be checked using above procedure and other Outputs shall be checked during respective functional test.

10. DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION (87G): Biased differential protection In a biased differential relay, the through current is used to increase the setting of the differential element. For heavy through faults, it is unlikely that the CT outputs at each zone end will be identical, due to the effects of CT saturation. In this case a differential current can be produced. However, the biasing will increase the relay setting, such that the differential spill current is insufficient to operate the relay.

FINAL SETTING TEST OF GENERATOR PROTECTION RELAY TYPE: MICOM P345 The through current is calculated as the average of the scalar sum of the current entering and leaving the zone of protection. This calculated through current is then used to apply a percentage bias to increase the differential setting. The percentage bias can be varied to give the operating characteristic shown in Figure 2.

Field Excitation Failure Impedance Characteristics: 1.)Apply the following voltage and current: Va = 100V0, Ia = 0.25A+90. The applied impedance is at position A of the polar diagram in Figure 8. 2) Increase the current until the relay operates. This should occur at roughly 0.40A (100V/(220+15)) and indicates that we are now at the outer edge of the circle point B (Xa1+Xb1). 3) Increase the current to 0.5A. The relay should be operating strongly as the relay impedance is now at point C. 4) Rotate the phase angle of the current anti-clockwise until the relay drops off 310 and it is possible to reset it. Slowly rotate the current phase angle clockwise until the relay just operates again at 295 . Record the phase angle between the current and voltage (1 on the polar diagram). 15 5) Without changing the magnitude of the current and voltage, rotate the current phase angle clockwise, passing

Slowly rotate the current phase angle anti-clockwise until the relay again just operates at 240. Measure the new angle, 2 on the polar diagram. The relay characteristic angle is the mean of the two measured angles and should be roughly 0.
