COVER STORY
Its that time of the year again: The Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference (or CPPCC, if you like short and sexy). Its a veritable whos-who of shoeshiners and bootlickers, all in Beijing for the two-week policy-listening-to festival. As always, well have wall-to-wall coverage of the exciting goings-on this year. Be sure to check our Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, iPad app, MySpace, Friendster and YouPorn feeds for live updates! But lets kick things off with some lesser-known facts about the CPPCC.
Questioned as to why he chose to potentially threaten his clean image in America by sitting on the CPPCC, Jackie Chan clarified: Being a stuntman, I am pretty used to taking incredibly stupid risks. In a statement this week, the party condemned certain foreign governments for multiple 20th century attacks on Chinese cities that destroyed priceless cultural relics. Said the statement; This aggression offends the Chinese governments proud legacy of protecting our rich cultural heritage over the last century, from 1900 to 1966, and then again from 1976 to today. While public anticipation was high for the partys six point plan for pollution reduction, it was a bit more than disappointing that four involved a yet-to-be-invented time machine and the other two made reference to a big sky vacuum. While critics were disappointed at how seldom the words Hong Kong were mentioned during the conference, some were unaware that Hong Kong, the mall, safe deposit box and 7-Eleven are interchangeable terms in Beijing.
The last C in CPPCC stands for for C+C Music Factory. Desperate to court every overseas Chinese celebrity available, the CPPCC has curiously reserved seats at this years conference for the Wu Tang Clan. While media speculated for months about who in China would have the experience to stand tall on the international stage and strengthen defense at this years conference, few expected both responsibilities to fall to Yao Ming. When asked by Taiwanese press what the party meant by our territory when discussing defense, Xi Jinping happily clarified: Any and all lands under possession of the PRC when Mao took power in 1949. And Tibet. Six of the seven seas. Oh, did I say space yet? When introducing at least one new SAR was the unanimously supported solution for controlling the rural population this week, media reception was cold. In fairness, it probably wasnt wise for the press release to lead with the headline More SARS. While Bo Xilai will not be in attendance this year, it has been announced that his wife will be in charge of champagne-pouring service.

The buzz: Local design concept store Zixag (pronounced zigzag) opened its first shop in the city in 2011a unique combination office-slash-store in an industrial building in Kwun Tong. Its second brancha multi-use space, not merely a shopjoins the collective of trendy cafes and lifestyle boutiques in Sheung Wan. In addition to the Airbag, Zixag produces casual and work bags built for city explorers and urban nomads, along with a number of other design items such as tableware, figurines and other accessories. THE BOOKIE
started her mossarium (an aquarium of miniature moss-based landscapes) business last October. She tells Mark Yuen how she came up with the idea.
HK Magazine: How did you first get into the field? Maggie Chan: Ive been a full-time TV producer for the past 13 years. Ive always believed that one person doesnt have to just do only one thing in his or her whole life. Besides my full-time job, I try to do something else to keep myself excited. I lived in Melbourne for a year. As I have always been interested in paintings, while there I held a campaign called the Popart Movement, in which I did social painting sessions at different locations, gathering people to paint together. We collaborated with Ikea and we did 400 paintings and sold them to charity. During my time in Melbourne, there were a lot of people collecting terraqariums (a more general version of the mossarium, made with different plant sources) and mossariums. I found that all my friends started to make their own terraquariums. It got me excited, so I started doing this. Back then, I was only doing it with plants in a jar. When I came back to Hong Kong last year, I decided to open up Lilliput Tales because I was looking for places to make and sell these mossariums. I wanted to keep it a bit different and I started to put small little people in each jar. In fact, Id say I am the only person whose mossariums have these mini people in them. HK: What are you inspired by? MC: Each jar has its own story, which is a captured moment of a persons life. You know, the pace in Hong Kong is so fast. Sometimes, we forget things or dont try to remember things. I get all my inspirations from observing people, reading, watching movies, going to exhibitions, having creative engagements and talking to others. HK: Where do you get your materials from? MC: Predominantly, I get most of my stuff in Hong Kong. I visit the Flower Market a lot in Mong Kok, where I can find a lot of the things I need. I do go to the goldfish market as well to look for aquariums in shops that sell fish products. Also, I get some products from China. For the little people, I buy them from a supplier who sells the figures from the German company Preiserthey make the best models, with very good detailing. The figures come in different scenarios and I use them in their pre-existing forms. If someone comes and says they want a wedding gift for their friends, I would get a wedding couple with some guests sitting around and build a story around them. HK: What are your future plans? MC: We would like to hold an exhibition in four to five months. Im working towards holding an exhibition [showcasing] around 20 to 30 mossarium jars, getting people to buy our products as well as to show our mossariums to the public. Visit Maggie at Lilliput Tales, 19/F, The Phoenix, 21-25 Luard Rd., Wan Chai, 6679-0282, www.lilliputtales.com.

As unique as it is unforgettable, witnessing supersized sumo wrestlers duke it out live should be on every sports fans bucket list. Stables of wrestlers only hit the elevated ring for six tournaments a year, but each event lasts 15 days and the steep admission price seems all the more reasonable when you realize that dozens of ghts occur before a yokozuna (grand champion) emerges for the days nal bout. We recommend showing up rst thing in the morning; its entirely acceptable to squat terrifyingly close to the action in front-row boxes, as their wealthy owners seldom show up before mid-afternoon when the best ghters toss chalk and take center stage.

In truth, the event was only held on Mount Fuji once, and those who witnessed the legendary show have contributed to the lore that has turned Fuji Rock into Japans largest outdoor music festival (the story involves a typhoon, hypothermia and the Red Hot Chili Peppers). The annual event now boasts over 200 acts across seven stages, and in the past two years the crowds have swelled over the 100,000 mark to see sets from Coldplay, Radiohead, Jack White, Elvis Costello, the Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher. The line-up for 2013 rolls out over the next few months, but theyve already announced that Nine Inch Nails and Bjork will be headliners and that acts like Of Monsters and Men, fun and The xx will appear. The Korean government likes to credit this festivals growth to the restorative properties of Boryeongs mud ats and the natural beauty of this small town, located a couple hours south of Seoul. Well, with all due respect, weve been to the event and lets just say that it isnt quiet mud baths that have made this the peninsulas most popular draw for expats and tourists alike. Convenience stores effortlessly fulll their beer-selling quotas as the packed beach plays host to mud wrestling, mud sliding, mud swimming and even a mud marathon. Last year, Hong Kong received more than four and a half million tourists (thats more than half the local population!). In a city where the population density is one of the highest in the world, its no wonder many of us go away for short periods to get some space and fresh air. Some opt for staycations, while most go for short weekend jaunts. For one of your upcoming trips, why not head to the W Taipei? Located right in the middle of Taipeis Xinyi district, the hotel is chic, modern, and buzzing with activity. Each of their 405 Rooms contains the signature W Mattress which is beautifully dressed with Sleep Naked bed linen supplied by its parent company Beaumont & Brown Ltd. Be prepared for a perfect nights sleep cocooned in 100% 400 Thread-count cotton and resting softly amongst their goose down pillows and duvets. Royal Ascot
We Hongkongers love a utter on the ponies, and so if youre in England this summer, a visit to the countrys most famous race meet is not to be missed. Filled with pomp, ceremony and plenty of bubbly, Royal Ascot is attended by the royal family each year, having been founded by Queen Anne in 1711. Almost as important as the races themselves is the fashion, with outrageous hats aplenty on display. Sha Tin Racecourse, this is not. There are three ticket categories: Silver Ring tickets, which are the cheapest with no formal dress code; Grandstand Tickets, which have more of a carnival atmosphere with live military bands, dining facilities and entertainment; and Royal Enclosure access, which are invitation only. Ladies in both the Grandstand and Royal Enclosure are required to wear hats (plus no strappy dresses, midriffs or too much leg), while the men in the Grandstand are expected to dress in suits and ties. Gents mixing with the royals have to slap on a posh morning suit and top hat. Book your tickets before April 26 for early-bird prices.

Palawan Calling
Palawan is the Philippines not-so-bestkept-secret these days, but despite its growing popularity, the archipelago remains mercifully free from the kind of rampant development that wrecked formerly pristine parts of Thailand. But if you dont fancy slumming it in a wooden beach shack (although theres a lot to be said for going back to basics), you can check into the new island resort El Nido Pangulasian Island (www.elnidoresorts.com). The 42-villa retreat has an on-site dive center, a 750-meter white sand beach, nature trails and clear blue lagoons surrounding the nearby Miniloc Island.

Indigenous China
The ethnically and topographically diverse province of Yunnan is famous for the many minority ethnic tribes that call the place home. Xishuangbanna, the southernmost tip of the region, shares a border with Laos and Burma and is hot, lush and tropical. The area is home to one of the worlds biggest tropical gardens, the 900-hectare Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, featuring 35 different garden habitats and 10,000 species of tropical plantstop of the list of places to visit for any traveler to the area. There arent too many hotels in this remote region yet, but the new Anantara Xishuangbanna Resort & Spa, set along the Luosuo River, looks well worth a visit. A Toast to Absinthe
It is strange that in germphobic Hong Kong, we have such a paltry selection of hand sanitizers. It seems that theyre basically available in a rather clinical hospital-esque scent, and thats about it. What I wasnt expecting though, was for The Body Shop to launch a line of absinthe (yes, the hallucinationinducing, highly alcoholic spirit thats more commonly found in French lounges than in beauty lines) hand care products. It seemed like a weird scent to roll with, but after using it for a couple of weeks, I have to say that I love it. The wormwood scent is light, fresh and quite unplaceablebetter than boring old lemon/lavender/ whateverand in addition to sanitizing your hands, the whole line is designed to neutralize (the hand wash) or disguise (the sanitizing gel) odors. If youre like me and hate being unable to scrub the smell of food off your ngers after a messy meal, then youll want to sweep up the entire collection. There are four products to choose from: hand wash ($139), hand gel ($59), hand cream ($69/$169, S/L) and a richer hand butter ($189). All available at Body Shop outlets citywide, including 101-2, 1/F, Man Yee Arcade, 68 Des Voeux Rd., Central, 2259-5266.

Following in the footsteps of Teakha, Harbour Pearl (38 Sai St., Sheung Wan, 2851-2886) has opened in the trendy Tai Ping Shan Street neighborhood, serving Taiwanese tea and pastries in a cute little space. I dropped by and had a quick glance at their drinks menu, which had about a dozen or so varieties of tea starting at $60 per dainty cuppricy. The venue is spacious for its size, and with carpet ooring and soft seats by the walls, it feels very much like the living room of someones home.

K-Roll
Korean. G/F, Sen Fat Building, 6 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, 2234-5505. Ah, the Central/Sheung Wan lunchtime conundrum. Youre sick to death of western food, but your waistline is begging you not to order yet another greasy rice box. What are you gonna do? Luckily for us, K-Roll, a stylish little Korean joint, has just opened up around the corner from our ofce and we are absolutely addicted. The titular K-Rolls (also known as kimbap) are basically Korean-style sushi rolls stuffed with beef (or tuna or veggies), egg, crab sticks and salad. They come pre-sliced in a cardboard takeaway box so you can either grab-n-go or pull up a seat in the tiny space. Light, tasty and extremely satisfying, these are fast becoming our lunchtime staple. If you crave more carbs, the Korritoa Korean burrito, if you willis a heftier rice roll stuffed with fried prawns (or chicken) and avocado. There are plenty of hot and hearty dishes on offer as well, including K-bowls with beef or pork, K-style bento boxes, bibimbap, spicy ramen, japchae (potato noodles) and dukbokki (spicy rice cakes). Were working our way through the menu and havent yet had a miss. Unlike many small-scale startups, K-Roll runs like a well-oiled machineno waiting around for your lunch here. Dishes y out of the kitchen neatly packed and ready to eat. The vegetables are crunchy, the beef lean and expertly marinated, and the rice is cooked to perfection. The prices are great as well. K-rolls come in at $48, with prices rising to $68 for K-bowls and $88 for the bento boxes. What more could you possibly ask for, besides extra gochujang? Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-7pm. $
Sichuan. 10/F, Bartlock Centre, 3 Yiu Wa St., Causeway Bay, 2802-2250. OK, so were a bit disappointed that Sijies new location feels more like a proper restaurant now than a no-frills private kitchen. The strong air-con blasting from up-top, forcing all of us to keep our jackets on during the meal, didnt help either. But the quality of the dishes and the hospitality of the waitstaff havent changed since their good ol days on Lockhart Road, and that, at the end of the day, is what matters. We dove right into a refreshing and surprisingly mild dry-mix chili noodle with spring onions on top, which consisted of smooth, thin and starchy strands topped with a sandy-textured chili paste. The next two dishes, a sauce-drenched chili cucumber appetizer and an equally sauce-drenched chili chicken, were identical in avors (mild and rened in spice but aggressive in savoriness) and greasy red glory. A stir-fried eggplant dish was miraculously juicynot from the oil that tends to collect within the cells of this super-absorbant veggie, but from the plant itself. And while the ma po tofu with shredded pork and the stir-fried potato shreds were more muted versions of the same theme (which, in case you havent caught on, is Sichuan spice), they were devoured with just the same amount of enthusiasm and speed. But the jawdropper, inevitably, was the giant bowl of mouthnumbing spicy broth lled with sh llets and glass noodles and with gazillions of de-seeded chilies oating on top. Theres something about a dripping red blood bath that just makes things that much more appetizing. Oh, and we felt the mouthnumbing part, alright, but the tender sh and fat, sloppy noodles kept beckoning, and we kept going. Well be back. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6:30-11pm. $$
Tai Ye Chicken
Cantonese. G/F, 14 Main St. East, Shau Kei Wan, 2513-0157. Shau Kei Wans Main Street East is the place to go if you are looking for great food at affordable prices. It offers a variety of eats ranging from fish ball noodles to Japanese ramen, but Tai Ye Chicken really shines if you have a sudden craving for Cantonese dishes. Like a typical neighborhood Cantonese restaurant, the dcor is unassuming with little furnishing. The walls are plastered with posters showing the dishes offered by the eatery, and the customers speak at high volume. We went first for the signature dish of Tai Ye chicken, which is, essentially, braised chicken with soy sauce. The chicken skin showed a delightfully brownish color, with the tender meat fully absorbing the sauce. The sauce is more than pure soy sauce, and the presence of wine adds an extra dimension to the whole thing. After the savory chicken, we ordered the pork chops with onions, which gave us no surprises save for the suspected absence of meat tenderizer (a good thing). We then ordered pea sprouts with garlic. Unfortunately, the veggies tasted heavily of MSG, forcing us to gulp down lots of water. The last dish was steamed razor clams, peppered with a hearty amount of garlic and spring onions. However, the dish only came after we nearly finished our meal, even though we had reminded the staff twice. The dcor and service might not be top-notch, but we will definitely return for the reasonably good food which comes at a really cheap price. The restaurant also has a branch in Tai Kok Tsui. Open daily 11:30am-10:30pm. $

Led by Samuel Ferrer and singer Jennifer Palor, Shaolin Fez is a 22-strong ensemble that places a unique take on jazz and symphonic disco. Prior to the bands March performance, titled Live and Let Die: The Music of James Bond, Mission Impossible, and more, the duo sits down with Andrea Lo to talk about the band, their inuences, as well as their upcoming gig.
HK Magazine: How did Shaolin Fez rst come into being? Samuel Ferrer: It came into being when I was rst writing musicI had some old tunes that I never arranged. I had always wanted to arrange those songs. I had a singer in mind who ended up having to pull out. I still went ahead with the demo, but I didnt have a singer for it. I saw an interview with Jennifer, so I checked her out online and was extremely impressed. We started making the CD two years ago, which we released last summer. Its taken a long time, in part because I have never produced one before. Things got very bigwe ended up with 20 musicians on the album, and also a childrens choir. HK: What is the meaning behind the name? SF: Thats a bit more random. I was struggling with names for a while. I liked the idea of coming up with some part of the name that was eastern and thats how the Shaolin part of it came in. Fez was just a word [that] could mean Fez in Morocco, or fez hat. Its kind of a non-sensical name. I mean, what does Duran Duran mean? HK: How would you classify yourselves musically? Jennifer Palor: The rst time I heard the music, I thought it was kind of James Bond on acid. Thats what interested me because it was so different to everything else Ive heard. I thought it was cool to be part of it. As a singer, with that kind of fat sound thats backing you up, it's exciting. SF: One of my inuences is Jamiroquai; I like that kind of upbeat, busy bass line music they have.
HK: What inspired you to perform Bondthemed music? SF: We did a concert with the Hong Kong Philharmonic about four years ago. There was a James Bond suite in [the performance] that featured some tunes and instrumentalsthe audience loved it. The idea I had then was that this should be taken out to the people. Why not get a smaller group together and bring it out to the clubs? HK: Can you tell us more about the upcoming gig? What can we expect from it? JP: I think this is the biggest yet, and its pretty exciting. There is a lot of new stuff that we are going to be doing aside from the album. SF: This is big for us both in terms of the amount of music were playing and expanding to. HK: Among the places youve performed at, is there a performance that has particularly stood out for you? SF: Clockenap was a really great experience for us. We had a huge crowd there. JP: I was surprised that it was raining and people still stayed, listening to us. If it was me, I wouldnt stay under the rain to listen to a band! SF: [It is great] to be able to participate in it having a great crowd, with a view of the harbor then after that, people saying that they heard us and want to come watch us. The show we did at Fringe Club was great too. There was an element to that show that, when we nished, we thought we had something special going on. HK: What is it like doing what you do now in a place like Hong Kong? What are some of the challenges you face? JP: Some people here dont care too much about culture and music, compared to other places I have been to. One of the challenges is to make people stop and smell the owers, and enjoy stuff in life like music and arts. SF: The problem is they are not being channeled in the right direction. Hong Kong has to stop and think about how Shanghai and Beijing can have superior live music scenes.

The Master
PPPPP
(USA) Drama. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams. Category III. 138 Minutes. Opens March 14.
There is a disquieting calm that resonates through Paul Thomas Andersons films; a subtle tension suggesting that we frogs in the audience have been left to bathe in the pot as it slowly builds towards a rolling boil. In his previous effort, There Will Be Blood, the writer/ director was kind enough to assure us of the impending fatal conclusion on the marquee. With The Master, he fades in with a hypnotic image of water being frothed up by a passing ship, a small clue about an approaching turbulence that rarely subsides throughout this American post-war time capsule. The first twenty minutes introduce us to Freddie Quell, a traumatized and belligerent World War II vet played with ferocious intensity by a brilliant Joaquin Phoenix. We observe him through a series of stunning snapshots from his final days with the navy and then his first attempts at societal reintegration: grinding and mounting a sand sculpture of a woman and then masturbating into the ocean; getting drunk on engine fuel; failing to see anything but genitalia during a Rorschach blot psychiatric assessment; seducing a model in a department store job and then violently assaulting a wealthy customer. Watching Quell is an unsettling experience, with his stooped, simian posture and twisted snarl hiding his entirely unpredictable and explosive potential. He is a lost sheep, and his search for a shepherd ends after drunkenly climbing aboard a Victorian vessel set to sail from San Francisco to New York. Enter Lancaster Dodd, a bombastic force of a man who not-so-humbly introduces himself to Freddie as a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist and a theoretical philosopher. The grandiloquent, narcissistic showman owns every room he enters, possessing a charismatic gravitational pull to those in his circle, all of them believers in his therapeutic, quasi-cult organization known as The Cause. Philip Seymour Hoffman is absolutely commanding in his portrayal of Dodd, a man who exudes intellect and authority with such a fiery sincerity that you wonder if he is performing for others or himself. After he becomes bound to Quell and their bizarre friendship flourishes, the film becomes anchored by their evolving relationshipare they father and son, guru and follower-thug, homoerotic friends or bitter enemies? Perhaps none of these labels apply, but they are equal parts spellbinding and painful to watch in tandem. While The Master in the title is intended to be Dodd, it winds up being Anderson himself. While Amy Adams (portraying Dodds wife and steely lieutenant Peggy) rounds out a trio of knockout performances, their characters exist in a world of absurdly enormous scope that few directors could pull off as beautifully. Every last detail onscreen seems perfectly telegraphed to exude a grandeur befitting of Dodd and yet a restlessness akin to Quell. Aided undoubtedly by the masterful work of cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. and composer Jonny Greenwood, and by the decision to shoot in the same 65mm stock used to make Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey, this film feels and looks like a classic. That said, though, the film isnt perfect. Andersons strengths can also be easily interpreted as weaknesses, as many might find The Master too ambiguous to be deeply satisfying. Its a marvel to watch, but at times feels long and inaccessible, often keeping the audience at arms-length and refusing to fit into a neat and tidy package. Dodd and Quell, it turns out, serve as a convenient analogy for the impression it leaves: youll feel like you either had a religious experience, or youll be left feeling stressed and shell-shocked. Regardless, its a film that absolutely beckons a re-watch, and I look forward to mine. Sean Hebert

Mama
(Spain/Canada) Fantasy master Guillermo del Toro snatched rst-time director Andres Muschietti out of obscurity after seeing the young directors 2008 Spanish-language short lm Mama; a tale about two little girls who turn up after a years-long disappearance. In this supernatural thriller based on the original short, the girls vanish when their parents are killed, only to later be taken in by their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj CosterWaldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain). But the girls, it seems, may not be the only guests theyve welcomed in from the woods. Expect to sleep with the lights on for, say, a week. Opens Mar 14. BC, AMC, UA, GH, MCL, GC.

In this lm, Hollywoods most famous former diver plays a professional thief, compelled to team up with Palm Beach insider Leslie (Jennifer Lopez) to steal heist-loot from the crew that double-crossed him. Introducing..
Given the pinnacle of filmmaking that was Oldboy, we couldnt help but root for Korean director Park Chan-wook to achieve some level of success with his first English-language film. Go to Hollywood, friend, and make it big! But Stoker starts strong, focusing in on the distant, introverted goth girl (obnoxiously) named India (Mia Wasikowska) as she attends her fathers funeral. At the reception afterwards, she encounters for the first time the creepy Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) she never knew she had. This first chunk of the movie is artfully constructed and paced like the second act of a typical thriller. It is full of unexpected turns, and establishes a nest of Hitchcockian mysteries revolving around this unsettling mans sudden involvement in Indias life. So far so good. But the thing about mysteries is, you need to care to solve them. This is where Stoker peters out. The question quickly becomes not whether Uncle Charlie is evil, but why. Too bad that Goodes Charlie is so blas that its hard to care. His connection to India and to the ice-cold Nicole Kidman (Indias mom) is likewise merely theoretical. These characters cant sustain a mystery with any amount of psychological tension. Only in retrospect did we realize that the script was a sort of deconstruction or retelling of Dracula, but with psychopaths instead of vampires (Stoker, geddit?). Thats a clever concept, but you really need to study the film before this aspect comes to the fore. Character concerns aside, the movie is redolent with filmic goodness. Park is a maestro, weaving striking visuals and gorgeous sound design into scenes of subtle terror. These moments stuck with us, but unfortunately they amount to nothing. As it stands, Stoker is truly an awesome thing to watch, but its enjoyment depends not on engaging with the characters, but with your capacity to appreciate the fine art of symbolic match-cuts, and the tonal poems of a skilled foley artist. In other words, only film nerds need apply. Zach Hines

Fee, Fye, Foe, Fum its great to look at, but a little dumb. Bryan Singers middle-of-the-road, straightforward Jack the Giant Slayer has unambitiously arrived in cinemas; yet another example of Hollywoods apparent axiom that if you cant make a movie great, you make it 3D. This latest offering is another addition to the pantheon of fairy tale adaptations to hit theaters in recent years, combining elements of Jack and the Beanstalk with the plot of an old Cornish tale that shares the films name. After a rushed and unimpressively animated backstory about banished giants opens the film, we meet the orphan Jack (Nicholas Hoult) as he heads to a medieval village to sell his horse. It doesnt go very well. He returns with a seemingly worthless bag of magic beans and a crush on Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson), the princess set to marry the conniving royal Roderick (Stanley Tucci). When a bad-ass beanstalk opens a portal to the sky-high land of the giants and takes the princess with it, Jack accompanies the gallant knight Elmont (Ewan McGregor) to save her from her grotesque captors. Its difficult to tell whether the performances were intended to be played straight or hammed up, but no matter; the real star of the film was the impressive work of the CGI-army that put this teen-friendly tale together. It felt like a movie made for a demographic rather than tangible moviegoers, like a watered down version of Lord of the Rings save the rich characters and harrowing fight sequences. This is not quite praise, but doesnt kill the film either. It is, as I am sure the marketing department repeated over and over, fun for the whole family and the kind of movie you enjoy, but then forget before you arrive home from the theater. Sean Hebert

First Person
Hong Kongs image as a place of openness and transparency rather than move backwards. The Hong Kong government nds it hard to make political decisions rather than populist ones because theyre more concerned about avoiding social unrest and worrying that they might disappoint Beijing. [On chief executive CY Leung:] I judge people by their actions and so far Im not impressed. He wanted this job for 15 years, so when he came into ofce he should have had 15 years worth of ideas ready to go, rather than starting studies and forming committees to think about things. [Would Henry Tang have been a better chief executive?] Not necessarily. I think Henry Tang would have been the least bad of the two. Hes not a smart man but he is a capitalist at heart. But I think if we had proper democracy there probably would have been better candidates coming forward. China will need to eventually grant its people democracy. This is the big question for China, because so far they have retained the communist party in ofce by generating rising incomes and prosperity overall for the economy. But theyve achieved that by doing the easy part of marketization. They still control the state-owned enterprises and they still treat the appointments for those enterprises as political party appointments. So theyre not going to capture the next stage of economic efciencies unless they liberalize that a lot then you might see the next level of prosperity. If they dont, then itll reach a point where the economies start stagnating, and then people will start questioning the authority of the party, and then theyll be setting themselves up for kind of an Egyptian spring. So I hope that China will, within the next ve years, take steps towards that liberalization. I dont think theyve got too much time. Hopefully, leaders here will try to convince the mainland that theyll have a more successful and happier society here if they allow a choice in leadership. Theyre more likely to avoid street protests that way than by pandering to every populist complaint and not having an elected government.

We are in a bubble.
We are in a bubble. The correct approach to a bubble is to not buy into it, but to be patient. The market is really sending you a signal if the bank tells you that you cant afford a home. And if we try too hard [to buy a home] well end up like the U.S. housing market with largescale defaults and foreclosures. I think that prices will come down when interest rates start going up. It might be three years but there will be a point when you can see that roadblock at the end of the tunnel, as it were. There is increasing intervention in the economy by the government, which disrupts free choice. They [the government] are ailing around without good policy. Theres a basic right to buy and sell property in the Basic Law. And when you start penalizing people for exercising those Basic Law rights then you are diminishing those rights. A free market only functions if there is a level playing eld and rules of fair play, which includes not allowing someone to corner a market and beat the hell out of it. The Privacy Commissioner is threatening freedom of publication in Hong Kong by suggesting that my compilation of publicly available data might break his law. And I think that he, in stepping into the public arena, is deviating from the core mission of the Privacy Commission, which is to make sure that people who collect private data from individuals, such as medical records
and bank transactions, treat those data properly and privately. If databases of publicly available data are illegal to compile in Hong Kong, but not illegal to compile overseas with the same information, it puts Hong Kong at a competitive disadvantage. It raises the possibility of needing to have a rewall around Hong Kong, where publishers overseas refuse to send webpages into Hong Kong, and instead put up a warning screen saying, We have detected that you are in Hong Kong, and we cant serve you data, because you may be breaking the law in Hong Kong. I think because the Privacy Commission has been a proponent of removing ID numbers from the Companies Registry, it may have been clouding their decisionmaking last week when they very publicly intervened and published a media statement about this. But they now need to think, do they really want to inhibit freedom of publication in Hong Kong as promised in Article 27 of the Basic Law? There is a lot of pressure on the government to back down, but there may be pressure from the mainland not to after recent media investigations of state leaders families assets. Its rather hard to tell [whether or not the government will back down] but we all hope that they will do the right thing and repair

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): "Telling someone your goal makes it less likely to happen," says musician and businessman Derek Sivers. Numerous studies demonstrate that when you talk about your great new idea before you actually do it, your brain chemistry does an unexpected thing. It gives you the feeling that you have already accomplished the great new ideathereby sapping your willpower to make the effort necessary to accomplish it! The moral of the story: Don't brag about what you're going to do someday. Don't entertain people at parties with your fabulous plans. Shut up and get to work. This is especially important advice for you right now.
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Maybe you're
not literally in exile. You haven't been forced to abandon your home and you haven't been driven from your power spot against your will. But you may nevertheless be feeling banished or displaced. It could be due to one of the conditions that storyteller Michael Meade names: "We may experience exile as a lack of recognition, a period of transition, an identity crisis, a place of stuckness, or else having a gift and no place to give it." Do any of those describe your current predicament, Aries? The good news, Meade says, is that exile can shock you awake to the truth about where you belong. It can rouse your irrepressible motivation to get back to your rightful place. to get a little wild and fuzzy. Don't overdo it, of course, but explore the smart fun you can have by breaking some of your own rules and transgressing some of the usual limits. of teachers who have revelations and guidance specically meant for you. Here's some advice from da Vinci himself: "It should not be hard for you to stop sometimes and look into the stains of walls, or ashes of a re, or clouds, or mud or like places, in which, if you consider them well, you may nd really marvelous ideas."

Dear Mr. Know-It-All, Ive recently moved to Hong Kong, and am in the lookout for shops that sell or rent reasonably priced props for use in a potential short film. Where in Hong Kong could I find such services? In particular, Im wondering if there are any shops that could custom-make reasonably good looking college ID cards or possibly passportsgood enough so in a close up shot they dont look like a fake prop, but arent so good that they would be considered illegal, of course. Wannabe Director Sure. You want "college ID cards or passports" for a movie. Nothing suspicious sounding about that. Ahem. But what I can tell you is that you can find items good enough to use as props on the stalls lining Pottinger Street in Central. They have all kinds of funky-colored wigs, glasses, feather boas and glittering hats. You can also get an array of plastic masks such as wolf, rabbit, avatar, clown and fox masks and masquerade masks as well as full costumes. Most prices are negotiable if you buy more. For more professional props, check out Pholance Creator Studio (3568-5721, pholance.com.hk) which offers a range of custom-made props, costumes and more. They have an unstated minimum order; get a quotation by first calling up.

My girlfriend and I read your column religiously, and I have you to thank for being comfortable enough with my kinks to tell her about my interest in BDSM. She is very GGG and has indulged all my kinky fantasies and discovered some of her own. Our latest adventure has her locking up my dick in a CB-6000 male chastity device. The play/sex has been super-fun so far, but we want to be aware of any health and safety concerns, specifically damage to my penis. Weve had the device for almost a week, and Ive been doing a ton of research. There is no shortage of information on proper hygiene and cleaning while locked, and the effects of infrequent ejaculation/ orgasm denial. What were most concerned about is not the effects of not coming, but whether restricting my erections with a chastity device can cause nerve damage, erectile dysfunction, or other issues. Should I be concerned about having my erections constricted by the device while being teased or wearing it overnight? (My research tells me that in REM sleep, the typical male will get three to five erections.) We plan on taking off the device for sexual play, which we do about five times a week, so there would be plenty of opportunities for my guy to stretch out. Besides worrying about limiting erections, is there any issue with having the device on long-term while soft, in regards to the cock ring that serves as the back end of the device? If it is fitted properly, are there any negative effects to having this on for a day? A week? A month? I find it odd that there isnt more information about this provided by manufacturers. From what Ive read online, there seem to be a lot of guys who stay locked way more long-term than Im planning, and I hope they have had questions like mine answered before engaging in that. There are more submissive guys out there blogging about their locked-up cocks than there are submissive guys out there whose cocks are locked up. By which I mean to say Whether youre talking about food, politics, or locking a dudes cock in a male chastity device, LOCKED, youll find more anonymous liars online pretending to be experts than youll find actual experts. Of course, there are kinky guys out there whove had their guys locked up for extended periods. Male chastity play is a real kink, not some freaky bullshit made up by a high-school kid to gross people out, e.g., Dirty Sanchez, Donkey Punch, Michelle Malkin. But the number of men who enjoy this kind of play is relatively small, and the number of chastity players blogging about their experience is smaller still. So its probably best not to take health-and-safety advice from the anonymous chastity players you run across online. So how about some health-and-safety advice from an actual board-certified urologist instead? Ive never had a patient ask me about using, or admit to using, a male chastity device, said Stephen H. King, MD, a urologist in Washington State. And I cannot find a single reference in the medical/urological literature. What would Dr. King advise a patient who asked him about wearing a male chastity device? As a urologist, my primary concern is long-term health and preservation of erectile function down the road, so I tend to err on the cautious side, especially in someone young with many good erections ahead of him, said Dr. King. So if LOCKED came to my clinic with this question, Id certainly caution against any long-term or continuous use of such a device,
anything more than four to six hours, if it places any significant compression on the tissue directly. Some guys who wear male chastity devices for extended periods invest in custom-fitted devices, LOCKED, as a custom device is less likely to put significant compression on the tissue than a semi-adjustable, one-size-fits-all, easy-to-breakout-of CB-6000. The device youve got is fine for newbies and short-term play, but the expensive chastity devices they sell at steelwerksextreme. comdevices with names like The Exoskeleton, The Torture Puzzle, and The Grinderhave the benefit of being both safer and impossible for the wearer to remove without the key. So lets say you invest in a hardcore, expensive chastity device that doesnt rely on potentially tissue-compressing rings to be held in place. What does Dr. King say now? With no compression from the cock ring, it might be safe for somewhat longer use, said Dr. King. Overnight use may still be problematic. Nocturnal/spontaneous erections are hypothesized to exist to encourage blood flow and stretching of the vascular and erectile tissue to keep it healthy and prevent atrophy. Like any other tendon, ligament, or muscle in the bodyuse it or lose it. I cant see how preventing these spontaneous nocturnal erections can be healthy. But I cant prove any long-term damage. Of course, if we only listened to doctors, no one would ever eat sugar, smoke cigarettes, or let his girlfriend lock up his cock in The Grinder because something bad might happen. (Diabetes, cancer, impotence, respectively.) So I got a second and a third opinion for you, LOCKED. The second opinion is mine: The manufacturers of CB-6000s and other male chastity devices dont provide information about risks because theyre not required to. Male chastity devices, like all sex toys, are sold as novelty items. Theyre not medical devices, and the FDA doesnt regulate them. But so long as your CB-6000 isnt so tight that its cutting off circulation, pinching nerves, or rubbing you raw, and so long as youre not wearing it for extended periods of time (I wouldnt wear one overnight, myself), youll be fine. There are, after all, thousands of CB-6000s in circulationit is the most popular male chastity device on the marketand if they were injuring men or rendering them impotent, LOCKED, wed be hearing from unhappy chastity players and their lawyers. Dr. King backs me up on this. He consulted another doctor whose specialty is urology trauma, and his colleague hadnt heard of any issues related to chastity devices. Perhaps that speaks to the relative safety of them, said Dr. King. If they were messing up lots of penises, surely we urologists would be the first ones to know. The third opinion is from a kinky blogger. Metal served for six years on the board of Gay Male S/M Activists, an organization dedicated to promoting safe, sane, and consensual BDSM, and now runs the popular BDSM site metalbondnyc.com. Hes also a keyholder to several men locked in long-term chastity devices. Im not a medical doctor, Metal said, so I cant speak with authority on potential long-term physical effects. But I can tell you that many, many men use chastity to enhance their sex lives. There are whole websites devoted to just that one aspect of BDSM play, and some of the most popular entries on my site are about chastity. None of the men Metal has personally locked upsome for months at a timehave had any trouble getting hard once their chastity devices were removed. When guys are first locked up, they often complain of waking up in the middle of the night with painful erections, said Metal. But that usually passes in a week or so. What I would suggest to this couple is to go ahead and experiment. Lock him up for a day or two initially, then a few days, and then maybe work up to a week or more. Rules are good. Maybe he gets unlocked only when hes chained to the bed. Then right after he comesif hes allowed to comehis dick gets locked back up before hes unchained. Metal urges you to be cautious, to take it slow, but not to fear chastity play. Think of chastity as a really, really long form of foreplay, said Metal. The possibilities, and the long-term sexual rewards, can be endless.
