Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Filipino Community:
I welcome you to the Church of the Epiphany for your

annual celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of the Pil-
lar. I am delighted that His Excellency, Archbishop
Romulo G. Valles, Archbishop of Zamboanga City, is
here with us today as the celebrant of our Mass and
honored guest at our dinner.
I wish to thank you for the magnificent statue of Our

Lady of the Pillar that you have donated to our church
and which has been blessed by Archbishop Valles. It
will soon become an object of devotion and veneration
for all the members of our parish community.
I am grateful for all the good work that our Filipino

community accomplishes here at Epiphany. Your strong
witness of faith and love for the Church is an example
for all of us.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude for your untiring efforts to promote
our people’s culture and traditions in New York. The enshrinement of Nuestra Señora
La Virgen Del Pilar as the Patroness of our Zamboangueño community will greatly
determine the preservation of our faith and our devotion to our Blessed Mother in this
part of the world.
Fulfilling the challenge of preserving our identity as a people lies in our desire to remain vigi-
lant and active members of our society. May your group continuously initiate programs that contribute
to uplifting our fellow Zamboangueños’ situation. Your group is one of the few who continuously serve
as instruments for the promotion of the Zamboangueño identity and culture. It is always a great joy to

phases of history. It is a reflection of our gratefulness to our Patroness, the
Mother of our Lord.
Fiesta Pilar is Zamboanga at its most colorful, most festive, most hospita-
ble, and most endearing.
To the La Comunidad de Zamboanga, I commend you for keeping our tradi-

tion alive. Together we bend our knees to say loving prayers to our Patroness, our
La Virgen del Pilar, in whose honor we now celebrate as the Mother of the ONE
who gave us our reason for being.

MESSAGE
At the outset I would like to thank Archbishop

Romulo G. Valles for having accepted my invitation
to be the main celebrant of the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass for our 20th Fiesta de la Santisima Virgen del
Pilar and to officiate the enshrinement of La Virgen
del Pilar at the Church of the Epiphany. The en-
shrinement, of course, would not have been possible
without the approval of Msgr. Leslie J. Ivers, Pastor
of the Church of the Epiphany. On behalf of La Comunidad de Zamboanga de
Nueva York I would like to thank Msgr. Ivers for his kindness and generosity.
The enshrinement of La Virgen del Pilar at the Church of the Epiphany is a dream
come true and my trip to Zaragoza, Spain to obtain the statue of La Virgen del Pi-
lar was well worth it. In this regard I would like to thank Consul General Ana
Feria of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid and Fr. Julian Ruiz of the Basilica de
La Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza who were so helpful to me .
I would also like to thank Congresswoman Beng Climaco for gracing our Fiesta
Pilar. Through the intercession of La Virgen del Pilar, we pray that the Holy Spirit
will guide her in her daily task as a public official.
I would also like to express my thanks to Ambassador and Mrs. Hilario G. Davide
for having participated in our Fiesta de la Virgen del Pilar.
Let us pray that La Virgen del Pilar will protect not only the people of Zamboanga
but also the other islands of the Philippines and the entire world from natural dis-
asters and adversities. Should you be within the vicinity, please visit La Virgen del
Pilar - light a candle and pray for PEACE.

The Story behind La Virgen del Pilar

Our Lady of the Pillar (Spanish: Nuestra Señora del Pilar) is the name given to the Blessed Virgin
Mary for her claimed appearance in Spain. Her shrine is in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in
Zaragoza, by the river Ebro.
According to legend, in the early days of the Church, the Apostle James the Greater was evangel-
izing the Gospel in Caesaraugusta, but his mission was making little progress until miraculously,
he saw Mary committing him to Jerusalem. In his vision, she was atop a column or pillar, which
was being carried by angels. That pillar is believed to be the same one venerated in Zaragoza to-
day. Miraculous healings have been reported at the scene.
In Zamboanga City, The Philippines, the Virgin of the Pillar has been venerated for almost four
centuries. Her statue is embossed at the top of the façade of the 17th century Spanish military fort
called El Fuerza Real de Nuestra Señora Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza. The military fort is now a
catholic Marian shrine. The city has also a street named after her - Pilar Street.
Our Lady of the Pillar is celebrated on 12 October and is the

patron virgin of Spain, the Hispanic peoples, the Hispanicized
city of Zamboanga as well as other municipalities in the Philip-
pines, and the Civil Guard of Spain.
María del Pilar is a common female name in Latin American

countries. In Spain, it is usually abbreviated to Pilar.
In Davao City, the Circulo Zamboangueño de Davao--through

their collaborative efforts--was able to build a shrine in honor
of Nuestra Señora del Pilar. The shrine is sited within the
premises of the Magsaysay Park.
In the City of Manila, Our Lady of the Pillar is also the patron-
ess of the Santa Cruz church at the heart of the district of Santa
Cruz. This church is being administered by the Blessed Sacra-
ment Congregation. The Jesuits had brought along with them
the patroness when they administered the church during the
Spanish era. In Santa Cruz, Manila, her feast day is also cele-
brated every 12th of October. However, the church has its
Marian procession on the 3rd week of October. The district
also celebrates its town fiesta on the same feast day of Our
Lady of the Pillar.

Rediscover Zamboanga
The City of Zamboanga (Chavacano/Spanish: Ciudad de
Zamboanga) is located at the southernmost tip of Min-
danao in the Philippines. It comprises of the southernmost
portion of the Zamboanga Peninsula, extending from the
northwestern part of Mindanao. Bounded on the south by
the Basilan strait, on the west by the Sulu and Zamboanga
del Norte, on the North by Zamboanga del Sur, and on the
east by Zamboanga Sibugay, and the most populous city in
the Philippines.
Zamboanga City is one of the oldest cities in the country

and is the most Hispanized. It is also one of the largest
cities in the world in terms of area. It is the third chartered
city in the Philippines. Zamboanga City is also one of sev-
eral cities in the Philippines that are independent of any
province.
Philippine Commonwealth Act No. 39 signed by President

Manuel Luis Quezón on October 12, 1936 established Zam-
boanga as a chartered city. It has been known variously as
"El Orgullo de Mindanao" (The Pride of Mindanao), nick-
named the "City of Flowers," and affectionately called by
Zamboangueños as "Zamboanga Hermosa" - Chavacano/
Spanish for "Beautiful Zamboanga". Today, the city is
commercially branded for tourism by the city government
as "Asia's Latin City," a clear reference to Zamboanga's
identification with the Hispanized cultures of "Latin Amer-
ica" or the USA's "Latino" subculture. Zamboanga City
has been the center of commerce, trade, health services, and
education for all of the Western Mindanao Region. It is the
seat of the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Au-
thority (popularly known as Zamboecozone).
Zamboanga City brings its best foot forward during the

popular Fiesta Pilar, celebrated in honor of the city's patron
saint, La Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragoza Our Lady of
the Pillar of Zaragoza, Spain. A statue honoring the saint is
prominently embossed above the facade on the eastern wall
of the meter-thick walled fort called El Real Fuerza de
Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (also called El Real
Fuerza de San José in its early days). This Spanish army
fort was built on June 23, 1635, by the Spanish Jesuit priest
Fr. Melchor de Vera in defense against pirates and slave
raiders.
Zamboanga is home of the four major universities: Ateneo

de Zamboanga University, Western Mindanao State Uni-
versity, Universidad de Zamboanga and the proposed UP-
Zamboanga the second UP campus in Mindanao Island.
The city contains the first Catholic diocese in Mindanao,
today's Archdiocese of Zamboanga which was created in
1910 and elevated to an archbishopric in 1958. (Source:
