Australia Awards Scholarships in Myanmar Australias international development assistance in Myanmar aims to overcome poverty. The Australian Aid Program in Myanmar focuses on four key objectives: improving the delivery of basic education and health services to the poor; improving the livelihoods of the rural poor; addressing the needs of conflict and disaster affected people; and supporting reform and improved governance. Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development. Through study and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia. Applicants will be assessed for their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to impact on development challenges in Myanmar. Applications are strongly encouraged from women, people with disability and people from ethnic minority groups. Priority fields of study The priority areas of study are education, health, agriculture, food security), and governance (with a particular focus on economic governance). Cross-cutting themes will also be considered. These could include disability, gender equity, humanitarian support, disaster management, development studies, law, public policy, and international relations. Level of study Australia Awards Scholarships These Scholarships provide citizens of Myanmar with the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification at an Australian tertiary institution. Awards will be predominantly at the Masters Level. However, a very limited number of Undergraduate awards maybe considered for applicants with high potential. In very exceptional circumstances, PhD awards may be considered for applicants who can demonstrate strong development potential.
Australia Awards Benefits Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian education institution, including any preparatory training. Scholarship recipients will generally receive the following: return air travel a one off establishment allowance on arrival full tuition fees contribution to living expenses introductory academic program Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the Scholarship supplementary academic support and fieldwork allowancefor research and masters by course work which has a research component where fieldwork is a compulsory component. Eligibility criteria Australia Awards applicants must meet all eligibility requirements detailed in the Scholarships Policy Handbook, available at: http://aid.dfat.gov.au/Publications/Pages/scholarhandbook.aspx In addition to these basic eligibility requirements, candidates from Myanmar must also meet the following country specific conditions: Be a Myanmar citizen currently residing in Myanmar. Be at least 18 years of age. Have an English language proficiency of at least 5.0 in IELTS (or 500 in paper-based TOEFL or 61 internet based TOEFL). If an applicant does not have any English proficiency evidence, then eligible applicants will be required to sit an English aptitude test in April 2014. Supporting documents Applicants must submit all of the following supporting documents with their applicationthese include generic documents requested in the Scholarships Policy Handbook and specific documents required for applicants from Myanmar: Document type Proof of citizenship i.e. birth certificate /passport if available and photographic identification i.e. student card/drivers licence if passport is not available. Email: [email protected] The selection process Selections of scholarship recipients are highly competitive and merit based. The selection panel considers the applicants academic and professional achievements and their capacity to contribute to the development of Myanmar on the completion of their studies in Australia. The selection process includes assessment of applications, interviews, referee and character checks. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for interview. Professional and personal leadership attributes Applicants who are shortlisted to attend a personal interview will need to sit for an official IELTS test in June 2014, which will also be arranged and funded by the Australian Government.
Preparatory training All successful applicants will be required to attend a pre-departure briefing Successful applicants who do not meet English language requirements for admission to an Australian institution will be provided with up to 1 year in-country English language training funded by the Australian Government.
