Unit 1 Plan
Unit 1 Plan
will learn more about football through reading, writing, and social skills lessons. Motivation/Classroom Management: For this unit, I will create a football token chart for each student. Whenever a student completes a task, they will get a football sticker on their chart. Whenever a student is staying on task or doing extra credit for this unit, the students will also receive extra tokens. At the end of the unit, the students that received the most tokens will get to have a pizza and movie party provided by me. Goals: 1. The students will be able to write five things they know about football. 2. After reading the story Going to the Super Bowl, the students will fill out a sequence chart of the events from the book. 3. Given 10 vocabulary words, the students will write a story about football using all ten words in their stories. 4. The students will draw a picture that will illustrate their stories that they wrote. 5. The students will work in groups and discuss how to work in groups and as a team. Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a characters thoughts, words, or actions). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
Instructional Strategies: 1. Cooperative Learning- Cooperative Learning involves structuring classes around small groups that work together in such a way that each group member's success is dependent on the group's success. 2. Using Multiple Intelligences- Students need to be able to access the topic through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. 3. Practice- Students all need practice to understand material. So by continuing to work on skills, they will be able to grasp the information. 4. Active Learning- Any approach that engages learners by matching instruction to the learner's interests, understanding, and developmental level. Often includes hands-on and authentic activities. 5. Before, during, and After- A metacognitive approach to reading that guides students to explore text before reading to activate prior knowledge, monitor comprehension during reading, and summarize the reading after reading. Technology: For this unit, the students will use iPads to illustrate their stories. The students will also use a Smart Board for collaborative work of what a team does. Real World Transfer: The students will learn how to work in a team environment by working in groups. The students will also share their stories with others which will help them with their speaking skills.
Lesson Plan #1 Objectives: 1. After the students see pictures that I posted on the Smart Board about football, the students will read a story and work on sequencing events. Academic Language: End zone, field goal, touchdown, football, fumble, interception, quarterback, tackle, team, cheer Materials: Going to the Super Bowl Book Sequence Chart Activities and Procedures: Hook: I will post pictures on the Smart Board of a football game. I will also bring in foam fingers, jerseys, and a football. Introduction: Have the pictures up on the Smart Board. Ask the students what the pictures are. Ask the students what are the items that have throughout the room. The students will then answer the questions and brainstorm different ideas and talk about what they know about football. Body: After brainstorming we will read the book, Going to the Super Bowl as a class. Each student will read a part of the book. After finishing the book, the students will fill out a sequence chart of the events from the story. Before filling out the sequence chart, I will go over the chart to show them how to fill it out and what they need in it. Closing The students will turn in the charts for a participation grade.
Lesson Plan #2 Objectives: 1. Given 10 vocabulary words, the students will write a story about football using all ten words in their stories. The students will draw a picture that will illustrate their stories that they wrote. Academic Language: End zone, field goal, touchdown, football, fumble, interception, quarterback, tackle, team, cheer Materials: YouTube videos of football games, Smart Board, Vocabulary list, computer, paper, writing utensil Activities and Procedures: Hook: The students will get to watch YouTube videos of past football games. I will show videos of fans at games too. Introduction: I will have the videos on the Smart Board of football games. I will show videos of fans too cheering so that they can see how excited people get into football games. Body: After watching the games, the students will get a list of vocabulary words. We will discuss the words and talk about the definitions. The students will then get a piece of paper. I will have the students write a story using the following vocabulary discussed from earlier. The students will write their stories about football and then with their iPads they will create a cover page that will illustrate their picture. Closing: The students will then share their stories with the class with their pictures.
Lesson Plan #3 Objectives: 1. The students will work in groups and discuss how to work in groups and be a good sport Academic Language: Team, Leader, Coach, Activities and Procedures: Hook: I will explain to the students that even though there are sports and people do win, sometimes there are times when people lose and they have to be good sports. Introduction: Ask the group, What does it mean to be a good sport? Brainstorm ideas and write them on the blackboard or a large sheet of paper. Body: The students will then go into groups and discuss ways they can be good sports. They should also discuss how they do it for work, school, and sports. Have the group come back and discuss what they talked about in their groups. Then tell the students what it is to be a good sport. Being a good sport when youre playing a game is important. Its also important to be a good sport when things dont go exactly the way you want, or expect, them to. Suppose you dont get chosen for a team, or you get the worst looking piece of cake on the plate, or you get hit with a ball by accident. If you can accept that things like that happen from time to timethat no one is out to get youyoull be considered a good sport. Its okay to be upset if things dont go your way, but its best to save your hurt or anger for a time when its safe and appropriate to express those feelingsprobably to someone who cares about you and will understand. In the meantime, it will help you get along with others if you can accept what happens and be pleasant about it. Closing: After the discussion, the students will come back and write what they think a good sport is and what are some examples. This is an exit slip.
Evaluation: The students will independently draw their own pictures of their stories. They will write stories with vocabulary words that they learned in class. The students will also read a story about going to the Super Bowl and fill out a sequence chart. Differentiation For student with a Learning Disability: I differiented my lessons by allowing the students to create their pictures using an iPad or by paper. I will also allow students to use a computer to type their papers if they cant write them out. For student with ADHD: I allowed the students to use the iPad to draw their picture. I also am allowing the student to discuss in groups around the room, so that they arent in the same place the whole time. Extension Activities: Create a football game in the gym with the students. The students have to pick teams, and use their new vocabulary to play the game. After teams are picked, will a friendly game of flag football in the gym.
