PSYCH 312: Locus of Control Scale1 Part 1: Please read the directions below, then answer the questions

by checking yes or no. Answer the following questions about the way you feel. There are no right or wrong answers. Dont take too much time answering any one question, but do try to answer them all. One of your concerns may be, What should I do if I can answer both yes and no to a question? Its not unusual for this to happen. If it does, think about whether your answer is just a little more one way than the other. For example, if youd assign a weighting of 51% to yes and assign 49% to no, mark the answer yes. Try to pick one or the other for all questions and not leave any blank. Check one Yes No _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____

Now, sum your points. This scale is scored so that higher scores indicate a more external locus of control. In past research, here is how others have scored: About 1/3 of respondents score between 0 and 8: This demonstrates an internal locus of control. These people believe that they control their own destiny, and see themselves as responsible for the events in their lives. Most respondents score between 9 and 16: This demonstrates that they agree with statements that go in both directions. This may mean that they feel an internal locus of control in certain situations, and an external locus of control in others. For example, you may feel much control over your academic work, but little control over your family life. About 15% of respondents score 17 or higher: This demonstrates an external locus of control. These people believe that life is a game of chance, and that they dont have much control over things that happen to them. Additionally, they may feel as if their ski lls dont make a difference.
