Work Study Assignment: Cel769 Project Planning and Control

This document summarizes a work study assignment analyzing the construction of an interlocking block pathway. It includes: 1) A flow chart outlining the construction process and activities like excavation, compaction, and block laying. 2) Critical examination of the sand leveling and block laying processes through a questioning technique to analyze the methods. 3) Time studies recording the time taken to complete excavation, sand filling, block laying, and waiting activities over multiple cycles. 4) Calculation of standard times for each activity accounting for contingencies based on the time studies.

WORK STUDY ASSIGNMENT

CEL769 PROJECT PLANNING AND CONTROL

Submitted by
Jatin Kumar Entry no. 2013CET2139

METHOD STUDY

1. Defining the problem

Method Study has been done for interlocking blocks of 50m stretch at IIT Delhi itself. Interlocking is being carried at the pathway along the road from IIT hostel gate to the Chairmans office. A complete stretch of around 50m was carried out in a day therefore the study has been done for 50m stretch. The various activities carried out is shown with the help of a flow chart:

2. Flow chart
SETTING OUT

EXCAVATION

COMPACTION

EDGE RESTRAINTS BLOCKS SUB-BASE COURSE

BASE COURSE

LAYING THE PAVING BLOCKS JOINT FILLING SAND

3. Critical examination of the facts (done by questioning technique).

a. sand levelling by manual screeding
Primary questions:What is actually done and why is it necessary? Sand is levelled by manual screeding. Where is it being done and why at this place? It is done on the surfaces with large surface areas. When is it done? It is done after sub base i.e. gravel layer has been placed. Who are involved? Two workers are involved on screeding. How and why is it done? The screed is pulled by two workers at each end. Secondary questions What else might be done? Levelling has to be done Where else it may be done? It cannot be done on unlevelled sub base course. When else it can be done? There is no other time when it can be done. Who else can be involved? One worker can be reduced. How else it can be done? It can be done by vibratory screeding but that would be too expensive. b. laying of interlocking blocks Primary questions: What is actually done and why is it necessary? Laying of blocks are done in an interlocking fashion. Their major advantages are high strength, speed of work and aesthetic appeareances. Where is it being done and why at this place? 2

It is generally done on the pathway along the road. In this case the work is being carried out along the road from IIT hostel gate to Chairmans office. When is it done? It is done where the work requires great speed and aesthetic appeareance. Who are involved? Generally 2 workers are involved in laying the blocks. One lays the block and other brings the blocks to the required place. How and why is it done? Firstly string lines are established on both sides and then one-by-one blocks are laid adjacent to the other blocks. Secondary questions What else might be done? Simply compacting the earth or concreting can be done but both the method will not be aesthetic in view Where else it may be done? It can be done in garden lawns also. How else it can be done? No other effective method is known.

Total Time Abnormal time No. of cycle Avg. Time Rating Normal time Allowances Standard T
T: Time and R: Reading

395min 5 79min 100 60min 8% 85.32min

150min 5 30min 100 30min 8% 32.4min

325min 5 65min 100 60min 8% 70.2min

40min 40min 5 8min 100 0 8% 8.64min

Time study was done for the method adopted on site. As all men were working, considering 8% as contingency time and obtaining the standard time for different activities. Noting the difference between the normal time and the time noted. This is for the reason that a construction work is always associated with large number of uncertainties and as the physical conditions are very variable.
