Attitude Warning and Recovery Ttitude Arning and Covery: A W Re

1) The document discusses an Attitude Warning and Recovery (AWARE) system that would provide audio warnings and recovery commands to pilots if the aircraft exceeds certain pitch, roll, or attitude thresholds, with the goal of improving situational awareness and helping pilots recover from potential loss of control situations. 2) The AWARE system would use existing aircraft sensors and EGPWS audio systems, requiring only a software update, and could help operators reduce training requirements. 3) Graphs and descriptions provide examples of the types of warning and recovery commands that would be given for excessive nose up/down pitch, roll, or combinations depending on the aircraft's attitude.

Loss of Control
Loss of Control refers to accidents resulting from situations in which the pilot should have maintained or regained aircraft control but did not. It is the number 1 cause of U.S. Airline fatal accidents.

The FAA published a bulletin encouraging simulator training in Loss of Control situations. The FAA will work with industry to encourage voluntary training for "Back to Basics" and preventing loss of control. There is initial agreement with industry for voluntary training of flight crews for enhanced situational awareness and loss of control before rulemaking is completed.

AWARE - Attitude Warning and Recovery

This presentation reviews graphically a proposal for an attitude awareness and recovery advisory system that could be embedded within EGPWS. Use of existing attitude sensor inputs. Audio output using existing EGPWS system. Software update only. No additional warning lights

In addition to the safety benefits from fitting such a system, operators may be able to make a case for reduced training when an AWARE is system fitted to their aircraft.

AWARE
Advisory audio warnings are given for pitch and attitude exceedences. (System description given in Attitude warning and
recovery1 djg .rtf)

Advisory control actions (audio) given for recovery, these aid the crews situation awareness which together with the warning should lead to a quicker recognition of the situation and recovery to stable flight. The recovery actions are based on existing industry guidelines. (Boeing, AOPA, FSF)
