Project Writing

Markham Middle School is establishing a student information system to better track academic and behavioral records of their socioeconomically diverse student body. The proposed database system will manage student, teacher, course, class, and book data to provide faculty detailed performance metrics and disciplinary records to support students. It aims to give faculty flexible, real-time access to update and retrieve customized reports on the 6th-8th grade students while meeting the school's goal of improved education for underserved youth. The project has defined objectives, constraints and risks that can be mitigated with documentation, a fixed scope, and user training on the new scalable and interface.

5ne o( the most important aspects o( !uilding a s"stem is to learn the !usiness. =n our case Markham Middle School is simpl" a !usiness where the customers are the students. >eeping that in mind' !e(ore we went (orward with our plans to develop our own s"stem we (ormed a s"stems review committee to help us understand Markham3s prevalent s"stem. =n a wa" (orming such a committee helped us in understanding the da" to da" operations' their re?uirements and their wa" o( carr"ing out !usiness procedures. 0e created our pro:ect scope speci(icall" designed to meet their needs. (ter much reviewing it was tiled that their current s"stem is not scala!le and will have to !e phased out in the next (ive "ears. The" also don3t have much (lexi!ilit" in their data entr" s"stem. 0e per(ormed a goal anal"sis with the (acult" and the principle to ensure that we have the same plans and o!:ectives as Markham wants. Goal anal"sis pointed out the pro:ect o!:ectives and constrains. This will (acilitate us in negotiating our appropriate actions with the school in order to reach those common goals. =n addition a risk anal"sis was also !eing done to assess the level o( risks involved in measuring the worthwhile ness o( !uilding a new s"stem over making changes to their current s"stem. Multiple areas were identi(ied and was noti(ied to the authorit" through the use o( case tools and diagrams that we have presented in the upcoming pages.
